  • In this research, we have selected the regions of Naerin river and Inbuk river where agricultural activities are actively carried out in the upper Soyang Reservoir and we have observed the changes of water quality while raining after finding out the characteristics of the outflow of floating materials by measuring the water quantity and water quality in division of rainy season and non-rainy season for those floating materials of generating pollutions of turbidity and malnutrition of the water for 4 year from 2002 to 2005. Results of the observation showed that the outflow of floating materials is significantly affected by the surface outflow of rain water, in particular, the surface outflow was great in June -August period of flood seasons.

  • A water quality analysis of rainwater collected from catchment equipment(2m${\times}$1m) was conducted to determine its suitability for domestic purposes, in this study. As the results of analysis, the pH of rainwater was 6.3${\pm}$0.3, and the turbidity of rainwater was over the 5 times than drinking water guidelines. For the usage of rainwater as the domestic and drinking water, the rainwater is need to treat. The analysis value of BOD was about 3 mg/L and the values of heavy metal as the Pb, Cd, Fe, Mn, Cr$\sub$6/$\^$+/and Cu was satisfied with drinking guidelines. Overall results of analysis support the possibility of rainwater as the domestic and drinking water.

  • Many advanced treatment processes have been introduced to WTPs, however, the consumer confidence on tap water is still low and the percentage of drinking water directly from the tap is less than 2 %. One of the methods to improve the credibility of tap water is to introduce a drinking water certification system. By introducing the system, water treatment processes can be optimized, which in turn, can significantly improve drinking water quality. In this paper, 6 water quality parameters(i.e., turbidity, CT, residual chlorine, geosmin, 2-MIB, Mn) which have significant influences on tap water quality and consumer confidence were identified, and their recommended guidelines were proposed. 3-Star or 5-Star certification can be awarded to the WTPs which have met the certification criteria. The drinking water certification system can be carried out as a voluntary program among drinking water suppliers.

  • This study was carried out to examine the characteristics of dual media filter with BAC and sand on a pilot scale which was installed in T Water Treatment Plant of Seoul. The conclusions drawn from experimental results are as follows : For the BAC-Sand filter, the preceded gravity sand filter did not largely affect the removal of organics and turbidity causing matters, tut the frequency of backwashing was explicitly reduced to two times with the stable growth of microorganisms. The biomass on media in case of existence of preceded sand filter was 1.4 times higher than that of nonexistence. In case of backwashing with water, the time needed to comply with below 10NTU took 22, 10, and 5 minutes respectively with the expansion ration of 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8. The higher the expansion ration was, the shorter the backwashing time was.

  • Since the bitter taste of enrofloxacin apparently limit the patient compliance in the oral formulations of the antibacterial agent, the masking of the taste is essential for the improvement of the therapeutic effectiveness. Therefore, this study was carried out to examine the feasibility of taste masking of enrofloxacin by the retardation of its dissolution rate using the formation of complex between the drug and Carbopol. The complexation between Carbopol and enrofloxacin was confirmed by turbidity, UV spectrophotometry, wide angle X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. The enrofloxacin content in the complexes was 34% (Carbo-enrofloxacin complex I) and 57% (Carbo-enrofloxacin complex II) depending on the prepara-tion method. The dissolution rate of enrofloxacin from the complex increased as the pH was reduced. The dissolution rate of enrofloxacin from the Carbo-enrofloxacin complex I was significantly lower than that of the enrofloxacin powder. Therefore, these observations suggest that Carbo-enrofloxacin complex I can be used to mask the taste of enrofloxacin.

  • In this research, we have selected the region of Jawoon river that is the area of high land vegetable growing in the upper Soyang Reservoir and we have observed actual floating materials that generate negative nutrition and turbidity of the Reservoir water and the changes of water quality by raining of each month for one year of 2005 in order to monitor the relationship of pollution sources by the outflow of rain water. In addition, we also have conducted statistical inspection methods such as correlation analysis and regression analysis on strength of raining force and rain continuance time among the elements affecting the outflow of floating materials.

  • The objective of this study was to invetigate the coagulation effects of landfill leachate by using Acid Mine Drainage(AND). The coagulation efficiency was investigated by mixing landfill leachate with F $e^{+3}$ solution earned by oxidation of pyrite(AMD). In the results of this experiment, it was found that the amount of removed COD and SS was approximately 30% respectively by mixing at the ratio of AMD three to leachate one. And it showed highest turbidity removal efficiency at all mixing ratio. Concentration of Fe was decreased with increasing mixing ratio, however it was increased inversely at mixing ratio 4. Optimal mixing ratio was 3 at the results obtained by leachate coagulation experiments. Also removal efficiency at mixing ratio 3 corresponded to 500mg/$\ell$ of FeC $l_3$ dosage. it was suggested that pretreatment by mixing of AMD and leachate remove both suspended organic material of leachate and metal of AMD.

  • This study was conducted to establish the refined model for prediction of flocculation/sedimentation efficiency in factual drinking water treatment plants using model tree technique. In order to carry out machine leaning for determining each linear model, five parameters; time, coagulant dose, raw water turbidity, SCD and conductivity, which were measured and collected from the field (K_DWTP), were selected and used. The existing analytical models developed by previous researchers were used only to examine closely the mechanism of flocculation rather than to apply it for practical purpose. The refined model established using model tree technique in this study could predict the factual sedimentation efficiency accurately (below 9% of average absolute error). Also, in aspect of engineering convenience, without any additional manipulation of parameters, it can be applied to practical works.

  • Control of potable water treatment plant (PWTP) is nowadays based on experience. The aim of this article is to show that model based control of treatment process is more efficient than process operation based on experience. Stimela environment is used for modeling of processes of potable water treatment. Application of the model was conducted on PWTP "Crkvice" in Zenica (BiH). This plant has used conventional rapid sand filters. By effective application of the model it is determined the optimal filter run time for different input turbidity of raw water. This results in the possibility of reducing the consumption of backwashing water, lower costs for its pumping and reducing the amount of coagulants. In the existing practice, based on experience, these benefits are not used.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of goat grazing on the surface water quality of the alpine grasslands. Seven sites were selected across the goat farm for water sample collection and analysis. Samples were analyzed for BOD (Biological oxygen demand), total nitrogen, total phosphorous, electrical conductivity and water turbidity. All the above-mentioned parameters remained below the standard limit of Korean government at the end site. Puddles showed higher values, but below standard, as stagnant water has lower physico-chemical properties as of flowing water. The present study clearly showed that goat grazing doesn't affect water quality in grasslands if grazing is according to carrying capacity of grassland and fertilizer application is judicious.
