The ecological study of phytoplankton in Kyeonggi Bay, Yellow Sea Il. Light intensity, Transparency, Suspended substances (西海 京畿 植物플랑크톤에 對한 생態學的 硏究 II. 光度, 透明度, 浮游物質)

  • To clarify the light condition which influence phytoplankton ecology in Kyeonggi Bay, light intensity, compensation depth, extinction coefficient, transparency and suspended substances are studied from May 1981 to September 1982.Light intensities lie within adequate values for the phytoplankton growth from spring to autumn. However, in the winter season the light intensities show less than 4.8mw/$\textrm{cm}^2$ on the surface resulting lower than optimum irradiance. Light intensity could be a limiting factor for phytoplankton growth in winter. Compensation depths seasonally varied over an annual period in this study. Especially, in winter, compensation depths are confined to only 1-2m below the surface. Extinction coefficient(K) values are relatively high over an year cycle. K values is highest in winter and lowest in summer. Transparency shows seasonal variation. Tansparency is high in summer and low in winter. Thus low light intensity, low compensation depth, low transparency and high extinction coefficient in winter are due to the high turbidity and high concentrations of suspended substances. High concentrations of S.S. in winter result from the sediments and detritus resuspended by the winter turbulence induced by the strong winter winds and the convectional mixing. In summer, good light condition and low turbidity may result from the thermal stability of water mass preventing the resuspension of sediment particles.

An Experimental Study on Engineering Characteristics of Wet Dredged Soil and Dry Dredged Soil after Chemical Treatment (습윤준설토와 노건조준설토의 약품처리 후 공학적 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Since sediment in a stable state is disturbed during the process from sediment in a natural state to dredged soil, the turbidity of water is not good. When the dredged soil settles again, the volume change in the sediment occurs. Coagulant and flocculant are added for turbidity mitigation of the water and faster settling process of suspended solid, and the amount of the substances affects the characteristics of the dredged soil. This study is to investigate the characteristics of the dredged soil depending on the amount of three chemical products added to the wet dredged soil and the dry dredged soil through measuring the suspended solids (SS), volume change and sedimentation velocity. The experimental measurements show that the SS decreased, the volume change rate increased, and the sedimentation velocity increased, as the chemical amount increased. In addition, it was found that the dry dredged soil reacted even with little quantity of the chemicals because derelict and microorganism are removed due to the drying process at $100{\pm}5^{\circ}C$.

Case Study on Remodeling Outlet Structure within a Sedimentation Basin for Improving Performance (침전지 유출부 구조 Remodeling을 통한 개선사례 연구)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the launder type on settling performance and hydrodynamic behavior within the two certain full-scale sedimentation basins (each flow rate/one basin; $10,000m^3/d$); one is the transverse typed launder(existing basin) and the other is building the finger type launder in combination with the longitudinal baffle. Comparative experimental investigations have been carried out through residual turbidity and particle concentration measurements in each effluent from two basins with the transverse and the finger type launders, respectively. From the experimental results, we could observe that turbidity removal rate in the finger type launder basin (modified basin) is about 30% higher than that in the transverse type launder basin (existing basin). Also, from the measurement of total particle concentration in each effluent, the removal efficiency was improved about 27% within modified basin compared to the existing basin. In order to explain the comparative experimental results and investigate the hydridynamic behavior within each basin in more detail, we conducted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and verified simulation results with acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV) technique. From the CFD simulation, it was investigated that extreme upward flow occurs underneath of the transverse launder. On the other hand, in the case of modified basin, the upward flow, which occurred in the beneath of launder, was much less than that in the existing basins.

  • The textile industry in Korea, the dyeing sector is an energy-intensive sector and has low per-unit productivity due to its labor-intensive nature. If the defective rate of dyed fabrics is high, additional costs are incurred due to an increase in production cost due to re-dyeing. Therefore, the goal of the dyeing factory was to minimize the defect rate rather than to save energy. It was difficult to check the dyeing state of the fabric in real time due to the risk of accidents due to burns or pressure when dyeing in a high-temperature and high-pressure environment. In this paper, a complex sensor that can measure the exhaustion rate of dye solution in the dyeing machine using turbidity, pH, and conductivity sensors was proposed, and the experimental method and experimental results were analyzed.

A Study on Development and Application of New Borehole Roughness and Verticality Measurement System (BKS-LRFS) for Drilled Shafts (현장타설말뚝의 굴착공 벽면거칠기 및 연직도 측정 시스템(BKS-LRPS)의 개발 및 적용성에 관한 연구)

  • A new borehole roughness and verticality measurement system (BKS-LRPS) for rock socketed drilled shafts were developed and verified its field application. The stability of BKS-LRPS was verified for several field conditions, which included the effect of measuring unit shaking, the application of water/air calibration factors, and the resistance of high water pressure inside piles. Also, effective measurement distances for various conditions of turbidity were defined in the field by measuring borehole roughness and vertical alignment for 6 drilled shafts. Vertical alignments for all drilled shafts could be measured by BKS-LRPS. However, borehole roughness was not able to be measured due to high turbidity caused by RCD drilling processing. Based on the BKS-LRPS field verification, BKS-LRPS is the first borehole roughness and verticality measurement system applying both in the water and air.

Development of Formulation of Ten-bag Type Garlic Tea (마늘분말을 이용한 간편한 tea-bag형 침출차의 개발)

  • This study was carried out to establish the manufacturing formulation of tea-bag type garlic tea. In order to eliminate of garlic-specific odor and taste, the masking effect of various additives against garlic flavor was determined with sensory evaluation. Leaves of green tea, arrowroot and Solomon's seal were screened as highly effective auxiliary ingredients in garlic tea. When two materials among the selected three auxiliary materials were mixed the same percentage, overall flavor of garlic tea synergistically was enhanced. The optimum concentration of garlic powder and stevioside as a sweetener were 20∼30% and 1%, respectively. Therefore, three types formulation of garlic tea was establish. When the color, turbidity and total solid concentration of three formulated garlic teas were compared with those of commercially available formulated green tea containing unpolished rice, the latter was more yellowish color and the former was more superior to turbidity and total solid concentration.

Applicability of CGS for Remediation and Reinforcement of Damaged Earth Dam Core (손상된 흙댐 코어의 보수.보강을 위한 CGS 공법의 적용성)

  • It is very difficult to rehabilitate the damaged earth dam core to manage it stably against development of flow path and increase of leakage by hydraulic fracture. In this study, application of CGS (Compaction Grouting System) to damaged earth dam core was noticed by analyzing and comparing the results of the in-situ data and FEM. Results of in-situ data showed that according as progress of rehabilitation works tip pressures increased and volume of injection decreased, voids of damaged dam core were filled with materials similar to origin dam core. Rehabilitations caused turbidity and volume of leakage to decrease at the same water level. Also, results of FEM analysis indicated that permeability decreased by rehabilitation. Through this study, it is proved that CGS is able to decrease permeability coefficient, volume of leakage and turbidity on damaged earth dam core.

The Changes of Vitamin C and Lactic Acid Bacteria Count in Dongchimi used Different Kinds of Water (물의 종류를 달리한 동치미의 발효과정 중 비타민 C와 젖산균수의 변화)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of vitamin C and lactic acid bacteria count in Dongchimi used different kinds of water (distilled water, purified water, Cho Jung Carbonated Natural water). Dongchimi used different kinds of water was fermented at $10^{\circ}C$ for 46 days. The changes of pH on Dongchimi used different kinds of water decreased in all samples during fermentation period, and then showed a slow decrease after 12 days of fermentation. The total acidity of Dongchimi used Cho Jung Carbonated Natural water arrived slowly at best tasting condition(0.3~0.4 point) compared with other conditions. The changes of salt content were ranked high one by one , Cho Jung Carbonated Natural water>purified water>distilled water during fermentation period. At early stage of fermentation, the changes of turbidity of Dongchimi used Cho Jung Carbonated Natural water showed highly as compared with other test conditions for 12 days of fermentation. Vitamin C content was measured high in Dongchimi used Cho Jung Carbonated Natural water during the fermentation period. Because calcium content was high in carbonated natural water, carbonated natural water had the highest calcium content during the fermentation period. The changes of lactic acid bacteria count showed the highest price at all experimental groups in 15 days of fermentation, but those of Dongchimi used Cho Jung Carbonated Natural water showed the highest price in 19 days of fermentation.

Advanced Water Treatment of High Turbidity Source by Hybrid Process of Photocatalyst and Alumina Microfiltration: Effect of Organic Matters at Nitrogen Back-flushing (광촉매 및 알루미나 정밀여과 혼성공정에 의한 고탁도 원수의 고도정수처리: 질소 역세척시 유기물의 영향)

  • Effect of humic acid (HA) with periodic nitrogen back-flushing was investigated in hybrid process of alumina microfiltration and photocatalyst for drinking water treatment. It was compared and investigated with the previous results of microfiltration water back-flushing or ultrafiltration nitrogen back-flushing in viewpoints of membrane fouling resistance ($R_f$), permeate flux (J), and total permeate volume ($V_T$). As results, the trends of membrane fouling were different depending on nitrogen or water back-flushing, and depending on ultrafiltration or microfiltration made with the same material. Also, the nitrogen back-flushing using microfiltration was more effective membrane fouling inhibition than ultrafiltration, and the nitrogen back-flushing was more effective than water back-flushing using the same microfiltration membrane. Turbidity treatment efficiencies were almost constant independent of HA concentration, but HA treatment efficiency was the maximum at HA 10 mg/L. From this results, it was shown that the treated water HA quality increased as increasing HA concentration, but HA could be removed the most effectively by photocatalyst beads adsorption and photo-oxidation at HA 10 mg/L.

Effects of Coagulants on the Manufacturing of Soybean Curd Containing Natural Materials (응고제에 따른 천연물 첨가두부의 제조 특성)

  • Soybean curd has been known as one of the most favorite traditional Korean foods as well as being high in protein. Each concentration of added natural materials soybean curds was chosen as 4% of carrot, 10% of cucumber, 1.0% of spinach and 0.05% of green tea powder. The yield of soybean curd containing natural materials was similar to that of non-containing curd. According to add GDL as coagulant, the yield of soybean curd containing natural materials was the highest. The turbidity of added natural material soybean curds was the highest coagulated with $CaCl_2$, but soybean curd containing green tea had the highest turbidity in the coagulated with GDL. In the chromaticity and texture properties of the additive natural materials in yhe soybean curd, the variety of additives had no effect. In the composition of natural materials, the carotenoid and chlorophyll content of soybean curds were high with $MgCl_2$ and $CaCl_2$ but polyphenol was high use of $CaSo_4$ and GDL.
