The effect of the hydraulic residence time (HRT) for the removal of aquarium waste, such as protein, total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity were investigated by using a foam separator Protein, TSS and turbidity removal efficiencies were increased with the increase of hydraulic residence time. The optimum hydraulic residence time was 0.5 min, and the highest protein and TSS removal rates were $14.4\;g/L{\cdot}day\;and\;38.9\;g/L{\cdot}day,$ respectively. The tendency of turbidity removal rate and efficiency was similar to that of protein.
Several kinds of coagulants such as aluminum sulfate, PAC, PASS are being used to treat drinking water resulting in residual aluminum ions in the water. Recently, it has been reported that high intake of aluminum ion may cause neurological dieseases such as Alzheimer's diesease and presenile dementia. Because of the possible adverse effect, WHO and EEC recommand to regulate residual aluminum. The autorities in Korea also has plan of regulating residual alunimum from 1995. But there is not enough information about the range of residual aluminum ion concentration when the aluminum sulfate, PAC or PASS has been used as a coagulant. Therefore the study has been conducted to find out the range of residual aluminum ion concentration after using aluminum sulfate, PAC, and PASS. Furthermore the effect of turbidity and alkalinity have been investigated. The experimental results are summarized as; 1. Most of the residual aluminum ion concentrations were within $10^{-6}$ and $10^{-5}mole/l$. Three coagulants have not showed any considerable difference in the residual aluminum concentration up to 50 NTU. However PAC has showed the least residual aluminum in high turbidity water over 100 NTU. 2. The low alkalinity water having 25mg/l as $CaCO_3$ has showed less residual aluminum than the water having 50mg/l alkalinity. However, the difference was not significcant. 3. Even the lowest residual aluminum concentration was over 0.05mg/l. Therefore the process to reduce residual aluminum would be necessary in water treatment plants.
This study investigated the applicability of a two step microfiltration(MF) and reverse osmosis(RO) membrane system for reuse of tunnel wastewater. In this two step process, the MF system first treated only micropollutants in tunnel wastewater such as suspended solids(SS) and heavy metals, achieving less than 0.2 NTU turbidity, less than 1.1 mg/L chemical oxygen demand($COD_{Mn}$) and less than 0.8 mg/L total manganese(Mn). The RO system then removed over 95 % of the remaining pollutnats and particles, resulting in less than 0.02 NTU turbidity, less than 0.5 mg/L chemical oxygen demand($COD_{Mn}$), less than 0.04 mg/L total nitrogen(T-N) and less than 0.01 mg/L total phosphorus(T-P). In particular, addition of an RO system could lead to markedly reduced high salt concentrations in tunnel wastewater, approaching almost zero. Thus, reclaimed water using the combined membrane system could satisfy current South Korean regulations concerning wastewater reuse(turbidity ${\leq}2.0$ NTU; T-N ${\leq}10mg/L$; T-P ${\leq}0.5mg/L$; Salinity ${\leq}250mg{\cdot}Cl/L$).
A pressure-type rapid automatic filter of 2000mm diameter and 170 ton/h filtering capacity was fabricated. In case of no external impurity inflow, the turbidity removal efficiency on raw water was experimented and the numbers of impurities of each sizes were analyzed by particle counter. As the result of circulated filtering, the raw water of 40 NTU was filtered to 0.44 NTU and the numbers of impurities above $1{\mu}m$ were removed by approximately 95%. With the filtering efficiency experimented and the mathematical method, the turbidity change of circulation water were calculated according to the inflow rate of external impurity and water treatment method of blow-down or filtering. The cost of blow-down water was calculated from above results. And simple payback period for this filter is calculated as about one year. Nowadays, as the cost of water is continuously increasing and environment regulations will be more strict, the water quality control using this filter will be expected to satisfy the user requirement.
An integrated water quality management of reservoir and river would be required when the quality of downstream river water is affected by the discharge of upstream dam. In particular, for the control of downstream turbidity during flood events, the integrated modeling of reservoir and river is effective approach. This work was aimed to develop a laterally-averaged two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2), by which water quality can be predicted in the downstream of Yongdam dam in conjunction with the reservoir model, and to validate the model under two different hydrological conditions; wet year (2005) and drought year (2010). The model results clearly showed that the simulated data regarding water elevation and suspended solid (SS) concentration are well corresponded with the measured data. In addition, the variation of SS concentration as a function of time was effectively simulated along the river stations with the developed model. Consequently, the developed model can be effectively applied for the integrated water quality management of Yongdam dam and downstream river.
The hunter values, pH, turbidity, brownness and solid yields of extracts in a shoot and stem of Lycium chinense were investigated. The results were as follows; The relationships between solid yield and turbidity according to extract solvents was not significant. The range of pH were 5.4 to 6.17 and the acidity of extracts were slitely low. Lightness of water extract was lower than that of ethanol extract, but red and yellowness of water extract was higher than that of ethanol extract. And also turbidity of water extract was higher in water extracts.
The Middle to Late Cambrian Machari Formation in the Machari area, Yeongweol, Korea consists of 7 lithofacies and 3 facies associations, which are thought to be deposits of carbonate ramp (mid to outer ramp) to basin environment. These lithofacies are bedded lime mudstone, laminated lime mudstone, bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone, poloidal/bioclastic wackestone, conglomerate, mottled lime mudstone, and shale. Bedded lime mudstone facies, a few cm thick lime mudstone alternating with shale layer, is believed to have been deposited by intermittent dilute turbidity currents. Laminated lime mudstone facies, alternating lime mudstone with laminated shale, is interpreted to have been formed by fine-grained turbidity currents. Bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone facies was deposited by turbidity current and peloidal/bioclastic wackestone faceis was deposited by debris flow. Conglomerate facies is thought to be deposits of storm activities. Mottled lime mudstone facies is interpreted to have been formed by bioturbation. Shale facies is interpreted to have been formed by suspension settling. Seven lithofacies of the Machari Formation are divided into three facies associations. Facies association I consisted of bedded lime mudstone facies, mottled lime mudstone facies, conglomerate facies, and bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone facies, is interpreted to have been deposited on the mid ramp. Facies assocaition II consisted of bedded lime mudstone facies, laminated lime mudstone facies, bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone facies, and peloidal/bioclastic wackestone facies is thought to be deposits of the outer ramp. Facies association III consisted of laminated lime mudstone facies and shale facies is interpreted to have been formed on the basin environment.
Effects of protein concentration, ionic strength, pH, and temperature range on the heat-induced denaturation of salt soluble protein extracted from spent layer meat were investigated. Viscosity of salt soluble protein heated at 65$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min began to increase sharply above 7 mg/ml of breast protein concentration, and above 21 mg/ml of leg protein concentration, respectively. Both turbidity and viscosity showed the highest value in cooked protein solution with pH 6.0 and 1% NaCl. The turbidity of salt soluble protein started to increase continuously from 40$^{\circ}C$ to 80$^{\circ}C$. The viscosity increased rapidly from 45$^{\circ}C$ to 60$^{\circ}C$ in breast protein, and increased from 50$^{\circ}C$ to 55$^{\circ}C$ in leg protein, respectively, and then kept relatively constant. Breast protein had higher viscosity than leg protein during heat-induced gelation. Therefore, salt soluble protein from spent layer meat was associated with denatured protein (turbidity change) prior to gelation (viscosity change) during heating. Breast protein showed lower thermal transition temperature, and better gel formation than leg protein during heating.

The oil tanker ship over 150GRT must equip oil content meter which satisfy requirements of revised MARPOL 73/78. Online measurement of oil content in complex samples is required to have fast response, continuous measurement, and satisfaction of ${\pm}10ppm$ or ${\pm}10%$ error in this field. The research of this paper is to develop oil content measurement system using analysis of light transmission and scattering among turbidity measurement methods. Light transmission and scattering are analytical methods commonly used in instrumentation for online turbidity measurement of oil in water. Gasoline is experimented as a sample and the oil content approximately ranged from 14ppm to 600ppm. TSK Fuzzy Model may be suitable to associate variously derived spectral signals with specific content of oil having various interfering factors. Proposed Parallel TSK Fuzzy Model is reasonably used to classify oil content in comparison with other models. Those measurement methods would be effectively applied and commercialized to oil content meter that is key components of oil discharge monitoring control equipment.
In the water purification plant, chemicals are injected for quick purification of raw water. It is clear that the amount of chemicals intrinsically depends on the water quality such as turbidity, temperature, pH and alkalinity etc. However, the process of chemical reaction to improve water quality by the chemicals is not yet fully clarified nor quantified. The feedback signal in the process of coagulant dosage, which should be measured (through the sensor of the plant) to compute the appropriate amount of chemicals, is also not available. Most traditional methods focus on judging the conditions of purifying reaction and determine the amounts of chemicals through manual operation of field experts or jar-test results. This paper presents the method of deriving the optimum dosing rate of coagulant, PAC(Polymerized Aluminium Chloride) for coagulant dosing process in water purification system. A neural network model is developed for coagulant dosing and purifying process. The optimum coagulant dosing rate can be derived the neural network model. Conventionally, four input variables (turbidity, temperature, pH, alkalinity of raw water) are known to be related to the process, while considering the relationships to the reaction of coagulation and flocculation. Also, the turbidity in flocculator is regarded as a new input variable. And the genetic algorithm is utilized to identify the neural network structure. The ability of the proposed scheme validated through the field test is proved to be of considerable practical value.
