  • This study examined the relationship between speech intelligibility and comprehensibility for hearing impaired children with cochlear implants. Speech intelligibility was measured by orthographic transcription method for acoustic signal at the level of words and sentences. Comprehensibility was evaluated by examining listener's ability to answer questions about the contents of a narrative. Speech samples were collected from 12 speakers(age of 6~15 years) with cochlear implants. For each speaker, 4 different listeners(total of 48 listeners) completed 2 tasks: One task involved making orthographic transcriptions and the other task involved answering comprehension questions. The results of the study were as follows: (1) Speech intelligibility and comprehensibility scores tended to be increased by decreasing of severity. (2) Across all speakers, the relationship was significant between speech intelligibility and comprehensibility scores without considering severity. However, within severity groups, there was the significant relationship between comprehensibility and speech intelligibility only for moderate-severe group. These results suggest that speech intelligibility scores measured by orthographic transcription may not accurately reflect how well listener comprehend speech of children with cochlear implants and therefore, measures of both speech intelligibility and listener comprehension should be considered in evaluating speech ability and information-bearing capability in speakers with cochlear implants.

  • Background/Aims: Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori-naive gastric cancer (HPNGC) is becoming increasingly important. This study aimed to explore the quality indicators for HPNGC detection. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, nationwide, web-based survey of gastrointestinal endoscopists in Japan. In addition to questions about the number of HPNGC cases detected in a year and basic information, the questionnaire also consisted of 28 questions: (1) 18 about HPNGC awareness, (2) six about diagnostic proactiveness, and (3) four about interest in HPNGC. Results: Valid responses were obtained from 712 endoscopists. The Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society-certified endoscopists had a significantly higher HPNGC detection rate than the nonspecialists (0.42% vs. 0.32%, respectively; p=0.008). The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society certification and high awareness and interest scores were independent predictors of the HPNGC detection rate (p=0.012, p<0.001, p=0.024, respectively). Principal component analysis showed that the endoscopists who attended conferences for collecting information on HPNGC had a higher level of awareness. Conclusions: To improve the detection of HPNGC, it is necessary to increase the awareness of the disease. It is hoped that relevant societies will play an important role in endoscopists' education.

  • Background: There is a noticeable change in the approach with which women nowadays seek help for diseases like breast cancer, primarily due to awareness campaigns, but what happens after surgical procedures is of great significance too. This study focused on the several psychological connotations attached to mastectomy and how the patients cope. Objective: To understand the pattern of anxiety and level of depression among Pakistani patients undergoing mastectomy. Materials and Methods: The sample size consisted of 88 patients who had undergone mastectomy at the different surgical units of the Civil Hospital, Karachi, from January 2012-December 2014; The questionnaire was administered before they were discharged i.e. within 3 days of surgical procedures. The patients were asked if they were willing to participate in this study, those who agreed signed the consent form and then we preceded by asking questions with a standardized tool. A self made questionnaire was constructed keeping in mind the nature and specification of the disease, which consisted of 20 questions related to anxiety and depression, focusing on a mixture of psychological and physiological symptoms. Results: There were a total of 88 patients out of which 36 (41%) were aged 51 to 60 years, 24 (27.2%) of the patients were in the age category of 41 to 50 years, 17 aged 61 and above (19.3%) and only 11 (12.5%) 30-40 years of age, the youngest of all the age categories. The pattern of depression and anxiety was found to be similar among all age categories, severe depression and anxiety predominating over moderate level of such symptoms, with only relatively few patients sufering mild or no depression symptoms. Conclusions: It was concluded that going through mastectomy leads to moderate to severe levels of depression and anxiety, primarily because the females feel incomplete and insecure after losing a part of themselves.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the subjective level of health-related quality of life of Korean healthcare workers using various quality-of-life instruments. Methods: This study included 992 participants, who were doctors and nurses. A survey was conducted between November 28 and December 4, 2019. Data from 954 participants divided into 3 groups (physicians, residents, and nurses) were analyzed. Four measurement tools (29 questions) were used in the survey to evaluate subjective health status and well-being. Results: In the Mayo Well-being Index, burnout during work (88.5%) and emotional difficulties caused by work (84.0%) were frequently cited by the respondents. Regarding questions on burnout and emotional difficulties, residents and nurses had the highest scores (91.0 and 89.6%, respectively). Emotional problems, such as anxiety, depression, and irritability, accounted for a high percentage (73.1%) of the total, while 82.2% of respondents reported that their work schedules interfered with their leisure and family time. There was no significant difference among the groups in subjective health status. However, 10.1% of the residents experienced very low quality of life, which was a higher proportion than that of physicians (2.7%) and nurses (5.2%). Conclusions: The level of well-being that Korean medical workers experienced in relation to work was lower than the results of the United States healthcare workers surveyed using the same tool. This study was unique in that it conducted a subjective quality-of-life survey on Korean healthcare workers.

  • The selected questions for this study was their conversation in problem solving way of working together. To achieve its purpose researcher I chose more detail questions for this study as follows. $\circled1$ What is the difference of strategy according to its level \ulcorner $\circled2$ What is the mathematical ability difference in problem solving process concerning its level \ulcorner This is the result of the study $\circled1$ Difference in the strategy of each class of students. High class-high class students found rules with trial and error strategy, simplified them and restated them in uncertain framed problems, and write a formula with recalling their theorem and definition and solved them. High class-middle class students' knowledge and understanding of the problem, yet middle class students tended to rely on high class students' problem solving ability, using trial and error strategy. However, middle class-middle class students had difficulties in finding rules to solve the problem and relied upon guessing the answers through illogical way instead of using the strategy of writing a formula. $\circled2$ Mathematical ability difference in problem solving process of each class. There was not much difference between high class-high class and high class-middle class, but with middle class-middle class was very distinctive. High class-high class students were quick in understanding and they chose the right strategy to solve the problem High class-middle class students tried to solve the problem based upon the high class students' ideas and were better than middle class-middle class students in calculating ability to solve the problem. High class-high class students took the process of resection to make the answer, but high class-middle class students relied on high class students' guessing to reconsider other ways of problem-solving. Middle class-middle class students made variables, without knowing how to use them, and solved the problem illogically. Also the accuracy was relatively low and they had difficulties in understanding the definition.

  • The purposes of this study are to identify the types of teacher efficacy, to present a theoretical base for teacher efficacy among Home Economics teachers and subsequently, to improve the quality in the practices of home economics education. To achieve these purposes, 263 secondary school home economics teachers were surveyed by the prime investigator. The three research questions of this study were: 1. What are the individual characteristics, the environmental characteristics and the trends of teacher efficacy among secondary school home economics teachers? 2. What is the factor in teacher efficacy among secondary school home economics teachers? 3. What are the types of teacher efficacy among secondary school home economics teachers? For these research questions, factor analysis and cluster analysis were conducted. The factor analysis on teacher efficacy with a survey of secondary school home economics teachers produced 5 factors of efficacy: classroom management, needs assistance, instructional strategies, environmental assistance and teaming assistance. The teacher efficacy had a mean of 3.58 and the home economics teachers showed a slightly higher level in teacher efficacy. Of the 5 efficacy factors, classroom management showed the highest level (M=3.89), followed by learning assistance (M=3.81), instrumental strategies (M=3.57), environmental assistance (M=3.42) and needs assistance (M=3.19). Overall, the teachers had positive feeling in teacher efficacy. Three types of teachers were found in the types of teacher efficacy: the supreme, the average and the efforts-needy. Those types were identified based on the mean scores of the five sub-domains from the factor analysis. To enhance the teacher efficacy, the needs assessments for the students and behavioral adjustment issues should be reflected in the curriculum of teacher education and workshops. The primary investigator suggested that continuous and long-term plans for teacher education need to be developed because short-term plans may not be effective in changing attitudes such as teacher efficacy.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to develop a tool for assessing foreigners' understanding of oral health information in Korea called the Test of Korean Functional Health Literacy in Dentistry(TOKFHLiD) and examined validity and reliability of the tool. The TOKFHLiD consists of two literacy assessment parts: Dental Information Sentence(DIS) aims to assess one's literacy of sentences containing oral health information. Dental Information Document(DID) aims to assess one's numeracy and literacy of documents containing oral health information. Methods: Twenty eight preliminary questions were developed based on various medical care literature such as the agreement to diagnosis and treatment and the treatment precautions. DID using 14 preliminary questions was developed based on the appointment card, the treatment schedule, and labels on oral care products. The 42 preliminary questions in the DIS and the DID were subsequently put through four separate expert reviews, in which questions with content validity score of less than 0.8(13/15 points) were corrected and modified by five dental experts and then were corrected for language errors by two Korean language experts. The preliminary assessment tool was tested on 153 Koreans, and ${\chi}^2$ test was performed on the ratio of respondents who comprehended each question, the ratio of respondents who chose the correct answer for each question with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Of the 42 preliminary questions, 1 question in DIS and 1 question in DID, for which the ratio of Korean respondents who chose the correct answers did not exceed the acceptable level of 80%, were excluded and a final assessment tool was completed with 40 questions. Conclusions: Following the development and application of the tool, examination of the TOKHLiD for validity and reliability revealed that this assessment tool is adequate for assessing oral health information literacy of foreigners who are using oral hygiene medical services in Korea.
