  • To elucidate the role of vir-box in the expression of the virE gene, the vir-box was modified by site-directed mutagenesis and tested for ${\beta}$-galactosidase activities. A, C, T T, A, C substitutions at -62, -63, and -65 positions, destroying the 5'-region of the vir-box and A T at position -55, destroying the 3'-region of the vir-box respectively, showed only 17% promoter activity. When the vir-box was modified to contain perfect dyad symmetry structure (DSR) by the substitutions T, G A, T at -60 an d-61 positions, ${\beta}$-glactosidase activity increased 302%. These results indicate that the 5' and 3'-region of vir-box as well as the imperfect DSR of the vir-box itself may play a very important role in the regulation of virE gene expression.

  • The $(Y,Gd)BO_3:Eu^{3+}$ phosphor was made by coprecipitation method. The precipitated powders were amorphous. The value of pH in the process of coprecipitation was critical for the luminescence of phosphors. The particle size and morphology were influenced by pH value. The lower calcination temperature and hydrothermal synthesis leads to the distortion of lattices. The distorted lattices changed the symmetry of $Eu^{3+}$ site. The broken inversion symmetry in the distorted lattice caused the increased emission of $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7D_2$ transition.

  • In this paper, we analyse and present mechanical dynamic characteristics of a micro-machined vibrating silicon ring gyroscope which can measure rates of turn about three orthogonal axes. The ring gyroscope has a ring connected to the gyroscope main body by support-ligaments which are arranged with cyclic symmetry. The natural modes of its vibration can be distinguished into the in-plane motion and the out-of-plane motion which are coupled by the gyro-effect due to the rotation of the gyroscope main body. • Mirror symmetry for del Pezzo surfaces was studied in [3] where they suggested that the mirror should take the form of a Landau-Ginzburg model with a particular type of elliptic fibration. This argument came from symplectic considerations of the derived categories involved. This problem was then considered again but from an algebro-geometric perspective by Gross, Hacking and Keel in [8]. Their construction allows one to construct a formal mirror family to a pair (S, D) where S is a smooth rational projective surface and D a certain type of Weil divisor supporting an ample or anti-ample class. In the case where the self intersection matrix for D is not negative semi-definite it was shown in [8] that this family may be lifted to an algebraic family over an affine base. In this paper we perform this construction for all smooth del Pezzo surfaces of degree at least two and obtain explicit equations for the mirror families and present the mirror to dP2 as a double cover of ℙ2.

  • Matching pursuit algorithm is a signal expansion technique whose efficiency for motion compensated residual image has already been demonstrated in the MPEG-4 framework. However, one of the practical concerns related to applying matching pursuit algorithm to real-time scalable video coding is its massive computation required for finding dictionary elements. In this respective, this paper proposes a fast algorithm, which is composed of three sub-methods. The first method utilizes the property of symmetry in 1-D dictionary element and the second uses mathematical elimination of inner product calculation in advance, and the last one uses frequency property of 2-D dictionary. Experimental results show that our algorithm needs about 30% computational load compared to the conventional fast algorithm using separable property of 2-D gabor dictionary with negligible quality degradation.

  • In general, when geometry and current distribution have a periodic or symmetric property, the analysis of a part model is sufficient to represent that of a whole model by using the periodic boundary condition. It is impossible, however, to apply the periodic boundary condition when the current distribution is not symmetric even if the geometry of the model is symmetric. In this paper, a novel technique to resolve this problem is proposed. Even when the geometry is symmetric and the current distribution is not, the proposed method enables that calculation time for a whole model is reduced to that for a part model. The proposed method is applied to a deflection yoke (DY), and validness and efficiency of the method are verified.

  • Cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels are composed of homo or hetero tetramer of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ subunits. The a subunits of these channels have a conserved glutamate residue within the pore-forming region. This residue determines the selectivity as well as the affinity for the extracellular divalent cations. Using the high affinity mutant (E363D) of bovine retinal CNG channel in which the Glu was replaced to Asp at position 363, we constructed tandem dimers and investigated the binding symmetry of divalent cation to the site.(omitted)

  • Lithium has been intercalated into $FeMoO_4Cl$, and deintercalated from $LixFeMoO_4Cl$ both electrochemically and chemically. The inserted $Li^+$ ions are stabilized in the distorted octahedral field in interlayer space of $FeMoO_4Cl$. The crystal symmetry is reduced from tetragonal to monoclinic due to the reduction of ferric to ferrous ions in $LixFeMoO_4Cl$ upon lithium intercalation. From the magnetic and structural data, it has been concluded that the high-spin electronic configuration of $Fe^{2+}(d_{xz}^2{d_{y2}^1}{d_1}{2d_z^12}{\cdot}_y2)$, corresponding to $^5E_g$, group term in $D_{4h}$ symmetry, can be stabilized by the elongation of $FeO_4Cl_{2-}$octahedra in a weak ligand field.

  • An enhancement of through-bond interaction by bond angle distortion in pyrazine was examined using various MO methods. Results of MINDO/3 geometry optimization with an angle (${\alpha}$) at $C_2$ atom fixed to 120∼90$^{\circ}$ lead to distorted structures in which the distorted bond is brought closer toward lone pair orbital n of N atom. It was also found that the bond angle distortion increased the P character at the atom $C_2$, resulting in an increased vicinal overlap between n and the $C_2-C_3$ bond. The FMO patterns of ${\sigma}$ framework showed three-fold degeneracy, one of which was of different symmetry which mixes in the symmetry adapted pair, $n_+\;and\;n_-;\;both\;n_+\;and\;n_-$ orbitals thus can interact with both FMOs of the ${\sigma}$ framework. The LCBO-MO analysis with partial elimination of bonds, antibonds or both, however, revealed that the main interaction of $n_+$ was with the HO-${\sigma}$ and that of $n_-$ was with the LU-${\sigma}^{\ast}$ orbital of the ${\sigma}$ framework.

  • Reduced Von Neumann Regular ring is pseudo symmetric and N(R) is reduced. Thus N(R) is pseudo symmetric and M(R) is reduced if and only if M(R) = N(R).
