  • Circle detection has long been studied as one of fundamental image processing applications. It is used in divers areas including industrial inspection, medial image analysis, radio astronomy data analysis, and other object recognition applications. The most widely used class of circle detection techniques is the circle Hough transform and its variants. Management of 3 dimensional parameter histogram used in these methods brings about spatial and temporal overheads, and a lot of studies have dealt the problem. This paper proposes a robust circle detection method using maximal symmetry property of circle. The basic idea is that if perpendicular bisectors of pairs of edges are accumulated in image space, center of circle is determined to be the location of highest accumulation. However, directly implementing the idea in image space requires a lot of calculations. The method of this paper reduces the number of calculations by mapping the perpendicular bisectors into parameter space, selecting small number of parameters, and mapping them inversely into image space. Test on 22 images shows the calculations of the proposed method is 0.056% calculations of the basic idea. The test images include simple circles, multiple circles with various sizes, concentric circles, and partially occluded circles. The proposed method detected circles in various situations successfully.

  • The symmetry of the conduction-band minimum of $GaAs_{1-x}N_{x}$ is probed by performing resonant Raman scattering (RRS) on thin layers of $GaAs_{1-x}N_{x}(x{\leq}0.7)$ epitaxially grown on Ge substrates. Strong resonance enhancement of the LO(longitudinal optical)-phonon Raman intensity is observed with excitation energies near the $E_0$ as well as $E_+$ transitions, However, in contrast to the distinct LO-phonon line-width resonance enhancement and activation of various X and L zone-boundary phonons brought about slightly below and near the $E_+$ transition, respectively, we have not observed any resonant LO-phonon line-width broadening or activation of sharp zone-boundary phonons near the $E_0$ transition. The observed RRS results reveal that the conduction-band minimum of GaAsN predominantly consists of the delocalized GaAs bulk-like states of ${\Gamma}$ symmetry.

  • Purpose: Driving is an important activity that is affected by various motor and cognitive deficits after stroke. On the other hand, there is no standard screening tool to evaluate the sitting asymmetry during driving, which is the stereotyped postural characteristic observed in patients with stroke. Therefore, this study compared the buttock pressure during simulated driving between healthy adults and patients with stroke. Methods: Ten post-stroke patients and ten healthy subjects participated in the experiment. The participants experienced simulated driving of 6.1 km during approximately 5 minutes for adaptation. The driving scenario consisted of 3.5 km urban traffic conditions, 10 km straight highway, and 7 km curved or hilly rural roads. Force sensitive application (FSA) was used to analyze the distribution of the buttock pressure on the driver's seat. The symmetry index (SI) was determined using the average buttock pressure of each side of the buttock. The closer SI is to zero, the higher the symmetry of buttock pressure. Results: These studies showed that the SI of healthy subjects was significantly closer to zero than that of the stroke patients. Conclusion: The buttock pressure of the stroke patients showed more asymmetry than that of the healthy subjects during simulated driving. Therefore, a therapeutic approach is needed for symmetrical sitting to improve the driving performance.

  • The communications market can be characterized for its overflow of users, oligopoly business structure, 24/7 open service, incomplete sales, and operation of core platform function. These characteristics have lead users to continuously make complaints and suffer inconveniences, and thus the concept of user protection has come to receive attention. This study aims to propose solutions through communication channeling between businesses and users, based on website construction from the viewpoint of user protection. In particular, a research model was developed to display how the information symmetry of websites can be influential on the satisfaction, reliability, and continuous intention for using communication services. Total of 14 hypotheses were set to measure a significant degree of variables corelation and eight hypotheses were accepted finally. The analysis results showed that information symmetry of telecommunication service websites had a positive effect on intention for continuous usage. Through the research results, it is expected that communication service businesses will be able to consider important factors when constructing websites. Furthermore, the results are expected to be utilized as for ensuring users' continued usage of their communication services.

  • This paper proposes the wafer position recognition algorithm using camera. First, for eliminating the image distortions caused by the illumination and the irregular camera position, the wafer image is restored as a circle through projective transformation. Next, we use edge detection algorithm to extract the wafer's edge and then apply Generalized Symmetry Transform(GST) to extract a circle. The GST evaluates symmetry between two points by combining a distance weight function, a phase weight function, and a logarithmic mapping of the points' intensities and detecting interest regions. Trough several experiments, we found out the proposed method is able to prevent the cleaning system and the wafer from damaging.

  • $Li^+$ ion complex of azacrown ether with restricted motion of freedom and pseudo-bilateral symmetry was studied by infrared spectroscopy, which has shown simplified and broadened vibrational features. The C=O and N-H stretching bands, in particular, shows anomalous broadening nearly ${\sim}50\;cm^{-1}$. The density functional calculation at the level of BP86/6-31+$G^{**}$ shows that $Li^+$ ion is trapped and rather free to move around inside the cavity, as much as about $0.70\;{\AA}$. Through the relocation of $Li^+$ ion inside the cavity, the conformational changes would occur rapidly in its symmetry $C_1\;{\rightleftarrows}\;C_2\;{\rightleftarrows}\;C_1$$. The potential barrier was obtained to be merely ~2.2 kJ/mol for $C_1\;{\rightarrow}\;C_2$. During this conformational alteration, the amide backbone twists concurrently its dihedral angle side to side about up to ${\pm}3$ degree. Selected vibrational modes were interpreted in terms of the force constant variations of local symmetry coordinates between conformations in the framework of $C_1\;{\rightleftarrows}\;C_2\;{\rightleftarrows}\;C_1$.

  • The computational time of Stocahstic Diagonalization (SD) calculation for 2-dimensional interacting fermion systems is reduced by using several methods including symmetry operations. First, each lattice is subdivided into spin-up and spin-down lattices separately, thus allowing a bi-partite lattice. A valid basis state is then obtained from stacking up an up-spin configuration on top of a down-spin configuration. As a consequence, the memory space to be used in saving the trial basis state reduces significantly. Secondly, the matrix elements of a Hamiltonianin are reconrded in a look-up table when making basis state set. Thus the repeated calculation of the matrix elements of the Hamiltonian are avoided during SD process. Thirdly, by applying symmetry operations to the basis state set the original basis state is transformed to a new basis state whose elements are the eigenvectors of the symmetry operations. The ground state wavefunction is constructed from the elements of symmetric - bonding state - basis state set. As a result, the total number of basis states involved in SD calculation is reduced upto 50 percentage by using symmetry operations.

  • In a face detection system based on template matching, histogram equalization or log transform is applied to an input image for the intensity normalization and the image improvement. It is known that they are noneffective in improving an image with intensity distortion by illumination variation. In this paper, we propose an efficient image improvement method using a simple regression analysis combined with a bilateral symmetry average for images with intensity distortion by illumination variation. Experimental results show that our method delivers the detection performance better than previous methods and also remarkably reduces the number of face candidates.

  • The analysis of dynamic responses are carried out on several orthotropic systems due to transient line source. These include infinite and semi-infinite spaces. The media possess orthotropic or higher symmetry. The lode is in the form of a normal stress acting with parallel to symmetry axis on the plane of symmetry within the materials. The results are first derived for responses of infinite media due to a harmonic line source. Subsequently the results for semi-infinite are derived by using superposition of the solution in the infinite medium together with a scattered solution from the boundaries. The sum of both solutions has to satisfy stress free boundary conditions thereby leading to the complete solutions. Explicit splutions for the displacements due to transient line loads are then obtaind by using Cargniard-DeHoop contour.
