Effect of Root Zone Temperature in Orchard on the Air and the Chemical Properties of the Soil, and the Growth of 'Fuji' Apple Trees (과원의 근권 온도가 토양 공기 및 화학성과 사과나무 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of the root zone temperature on the changes in soil physicochemical environment and the growth of the apple trees. Root zone temperatures applied were 20. 25. 30. and $35^{\circ}C$. A pot experiment of 4-year-old fruit-bearing Fuji/M.26 apple trees was done from May 15. 1997 to August 15. 1997. Shoot length and shoot number of 4-year-old Fuji/M.26 was longest at $30^{\circ}C$ but decreased at $35^{\circ}C$. Oxygen concentrations in soil air were maintained from 17 to 18% at $20^{\circ}C$ but fluctuated from 10 to 14% at the end at $35^{\circ}C$. Carbon dioxide concentrations in soil air was highest at $35^{\circ}C$. Organic matter contents in soil decreased as root zone temperature and duration of treatment increased. Nitrate and ammonium contents in soil increased with rising root zone temperature in the beginning but nitrate contents decreased at $35^{\circ}C$ as time progressed. Nitrate content was higher in 10~15cm subsoil than in 25~30cm subsoil.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the contamination of the soils around the major roadsides in Seoul and to accumulate base-line data. Fifty topsoils ($0{\sim}5$ cm) and 48 subsoils ($20{\sim}50$ cm) were collected from 50 sampling sites near Manguro in Chungnanggu. The samples were air-dried, passed through 2-mm sieves, and analyzed to determine the physicochemical properties and the contents of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) and anions (Cl, $NO_3$, $SO_4$). Soil textures of top- and subsoils were mainly loamy sand and sandy loam, respectively. Average $_PH$ of top- and subsoil was approximately 7.5, much higher than that of the forest soils in Seoul. Average heavy metal contents were lower than the levels allowed by the Soil Environment Conservation Act of Korea, whereas much higher than those of the forest soils. Contents of some heavy metals were higher than the maximum allowed levels. Anion concentrations were also much higher than those of the forest soils. A careful management to prevent the aggravation of the present contamination level and the diffusion of contaminants is recommended.

Study on Bread-making Quality with Barley Sourdough in Composite Bread (보리 Sourdough의 제빵성 연구)

  • Waxy barley flour was fermented by two kinds of starter cultures; L. plantarum and L. brevis, alone or in combination and the effect was evaluated on waxy barley and wheat composite bread quality. In all three barley sourdoughs, fermentation decreased the pH, total sugar and reducing sugar, and increased lactic acid bacteria cell numbers. However yeasts (S. cerevisiae) were reduced. There was significant difference in physicochemical characteristics between the reference(composite barley dough containing improvement agent) and the barley sourdoughs (p <0.05). Barley sourdough fermented by L. plantarum showed more desirable farinogram properties of peak time, stability and elasticity than that of the reference. The rheofermentometer data for L. brevis produced the most $CO_2$ release curve, whereas L. plantarum held maximum $CO_2$ retention differed significantly from that of the breads made with barley sourdoughs fermented with the respectives starter cultures (p < 0.05). Barley sourdough bread fermented with L. plantarum resulted in better bread quality than the reference bread. The positive effect of fermentation with L. plantarum on bread quality was evident when comparing the well developed protein-starch matrix structure of the bread baked with barley sourdough with the reference bread.

Effect of Interesterification for Increasing Creaming Power in Lard (라아드의 크림성 향상에 대한 에스테르교환의 효과)

  • This study was performed in order to clarify whether the creaming power of lard could be improved by random interesterification. The physicochemical properties, solid fat content, consistency, and creaming power of fat, and sensory evaluation on cream were investigated. The temperature of SFC $5{\sim}30$ showed the wider range from $10^{\circ}C\;to\;33^{\circ}C$ in random interesterified lard than that from $16^{\circ}C\;to\;30^{\circ}C$ in lard. The consistency of random interesterified lard was gradually decreased as temperature was increased, and was about $2000g\;per\;cm^{2}$ at low temperature level below $10^{\circ}C$. The sensory evaluation at maximum over ruu indicated that texture, polish and solubility of the cream made with random interesterified lard was slightly lower than that with lard, but random interesterified lard greatly improved the viscosity and firmness of cream. As the result of this study, the creaming power of lard was increased by random interesterification. Especially, the random interesterified lard could be considered as the better fat materials used in winter cream.

Effects of Evaporation on the Weathering Rate and Chemical Composition of Iranian Heavy Crude Oil (이란산 원유의 증발에 따른 풍화율 및 화학적 성상 변화)

  • Once oil is spilled into marine environment, it experiences various weathering processes among which evaporation is the most dominant process in the initial stage of weathering. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of evaporation on the physicochemical properties of spilled oil using standardized laboratory experiments. Laboratory evaporation process was successfully reproduced using controlled rotary evaporation method. In case of Iranian Heavy crude (IHC), evaporation rate after 48 hours was $29.3{\pm}0.4%$ (n=40, p<0.001). Evaporation was simulated using ADIOS2 weathering model and the result was in agreement with laboratory experiment. Chemical composition changes of petroleum hydrocarbons including alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biomarkers by evaporation rate were also analyzed. As oil evaporated, low molecular weight alkanes and PAHs decreased, while biomakers showed conservative characteristics. Among biomarkers, $17{\alpha}(H)$, $21{\beta}(H)$-hopane was used for calculation of weathering rates, which matched with evaporative mass losses. Weathering rate calculation using hopane showed that stranded oils of weathering stage I (28.9%) and mesocosm oil weathering experiment till 5 days (26.5%) were mainly affected by evaporation process.

Hydrogen Production from Photocatalytic Splitting of Water/Methanol Solution over a Mixture of P25-TiO2 and AgxO (산화은/이산화티타늄 혼합물을 광촉매로 활용한 물/메탄올 분해 수소제조)

  • A photocatalyst which mixed by the commercialized P25-TiO2 and a synthesized AgxO was used in an appropriate weight ratio to effectively produce hydrogen gas in this study. The AgxOs were synthesized with the conventional sol-gel method, and tetramethylammonium hydroxides were added at the synthesis process in order to stabilize the solutions, and then the solutions were heat-treated at the temperatures of -5, 25, and 50 ℃, resulted to obtain the three types of silver oxides. Physicochemical properties of the synthesized AgxOs were identified through X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning emission microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In the photolysis results of water/methanol (weight ratio 1:1) solution, the mixture of P25-TiO2/AgxO exhibited a significantly higher hydrogen gases evolution, compared to that of pure P25-TiO2. Additionally, the addition of H2O2 as an supplement oxidant and in AgxO synthesized at 50 ℃ improved the hydrogen production efficiency. In particular, the emitted hydrogen gases reached to 13,000 μmol during 8 hours when a mixed catalyst, AgxO of 0.1 g and P25-TiO2 of 0.9 g, were used.

Effect of the Physicochemical Properties of Soil on the Arsenic Bioaccessibility (비소용출에 대한 토양의 물리화학적 특성 영향)

  • Four well-characterized soils collected from A- and B-horizon in the Department of Energy Oak Ridge Reservation in USA, mainly distributed with Inceptisol(Inc) and Ultisol(Ult) soils, were used in this work. The bioaccessibility of arsenic as well as oxidation phenomena of As(III) was investigated with soils spiked with As(III) and As(V) using a physiologically based extraction test(PBET) at pH 1.5 and 1:100 soil to solution ratio. Also effect of aging time on the bioaccessibility of arsenic was investigated over the 6 months. After 48 hours(fresh) contacting As(V) solution with soils, all soils rapidly and strongly sequestrated As(V), especially Ult-B. However, little sequestration was observed after 3-months. When As(III) was spiked on the same soils, a great portion of As(III) was oxidized to As(V) after 48 hrs, especially Inc-A and Ult-A soils, which is strongly related with Mn content in soils. By using As(III)-spiked soils, much reduced bioaccessibility as total arsenic was observed from Inc-B and Ult-B soils over the 6 months aging time compared to that from Inc-A and Ult-A soils. This result can be explained by the continuous sequestration of As(V), produced from oxidation of As(III), onto Inc-B and Ult-B soils having much amount of iron. The trend of As(III) sequestration over six months aging time was quite similar with that of As(V) sequestration.

Identification of Priority Pollutants in Shihwa-Banwol Techno Valley Area for Management of Environmental Health (시화.반월산업단지 인근지역의 환경보건 관리를 위한 우선관리대상 오염물질 선정에 관한 연구)

  • Use of chemicals has greatly increased along with development of human civilization. Concerns about potential effects of chemicals on human health and environment have also grown accordingly. Due to the enormous number of chemicals being used, however, it is neither practical nor feasible to regulate all the chemicals. Therefore, it is necessary to identify chemicals that deserve more immediate attention, based on the effects on receptors to be protected. This study was initiated by the need for developing management policies for Shihwa-Banwol Techno Valley and its vicinities of korea, where complaints and concerns on environmental contamination have been raised for long time. This study to identifies major chemicals that deserve most immediate attention in environmental health management in this area. For this purpose, the study employed CHEMS-1(Chemical Hazard Evaluation for Management Strategies), and used chemical data from Toxics Release Inventory(TRI) and environmental contamination data from the environmental pollution monitoring network. Top priority pollutants identified in Shihwa-Banwol Techno Valley area were metals and volatile organic compounds, such as dichloromethane, trichloroethylene, diazinon, tetrachloroethylene, chromium compounds, tin compounds, chloroacetic acid, ethyl acetate, and zinc compounds, in an order of decreasing importance. An evaluation of physicochemical properties of the priority chemicals and the environmental pollution monitoring network database in Shihwa-Banwol Techno Valley suggested that the media that are of potential concern would be the atmosphere and aquatic environment.

  • To develop carriers of hydrophobic anticancer agents based on chitosan, chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (COS) was chemically modified with lithocholic acid (LA) which is one of the bile acids as a hydrophobic group. The physicochemical properties of the lithocholic acid conjugated chitosan nanoparticles (COS-LA) were investigated using $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and spectrofluorophotometer. COS-LA-paclitaxel (CLs-Tx) nanoparticles loading paclitaxel as an anticancer agent were prepared by a dialysis method and its loading efficiency was measured through HPLC. On the basis of DLS results, the estimated particle sizes of CLs-Tx were around 300 nm. Also, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) was proven to be dependent on the degree of substitution of lithocholic acid. It showed that the CLs-Tx has the superior potential for the application as a paclitaxel carrier.

Sensory Evaluation and Changes in Physicochemical Properties of Gochujang Powder with Different Drying Methods (건조방법에 따른 분말 고추장의 성분변화와 관능적 특성)

  • This study was carried out to promote aspects of preservation and convenience of red pepper paste (r.p.p.). Sample was prepared with spray drying (s.d), vacuum drying (v.d) and freeze drying (f.d) methods. The prepared powdered samples were stored for 90 days at $35^{\circ}C$ in seal condition. After powdered samples were hydrated, the samples were used for analysis such as a sensory test, texture, color and changes of component According to sensory test, quality of dried red pepper paste were better in order to f.d.r.p.p. < s.d.r.p.p. < v.d.r.p.p. Changes of pH, reducing sugar, amino nitrogen and NaCl of dried r.p.p. were not observed compared to control but viscosity decreased by about $15\%$ During the storage, acidity decreased by about $15\%$ and reducing sugar, amino nitrogen and ethanol decreased slightly. Hunter L, a and b values decreased from 24.8-27.3 to 23.6-24.4, from 10.8-12.0 to 8.3-9.3 and from 7.1-7.9 to 4.4-5.5, respectively.
