Object Detection From 3D Terrain Data Gener Ated by Laser Scanner of Intelligent Excavating System(IES) (굴삭 자동화를 위한 레이저 스캐너 기반의 3차원 객체 탐지 알고리즘의 개발)

  • The intelligent excavating system(IES), the development in South Korea of which has been underway since 2006, aims for the full-scale automation of the excavation process that includes a series of tasks such as movement, excavation and loading. The core elements to ensure the quality and safety of the automated excavation equipment include 3D modeling of terrain that surrounds the excavating robot and the technology for detecting objects accurately(i.e., for detecting the location of nearby loading trucks and humans as well as of obstacles positioned on the movement paths). Therefore the purpose of this research is to ensure the quality and safety of automated excavation detecting the objects surrounding the excavating robot via a 3D laser scanning system. In this paper, an algorithm for estimating the location, height, width, and shape of objects in the 3D-realized terrain that surrounds the location of the excavator was proposed. The performance of the algorithm was verified via tests in an actual earthwork field.

  • Recently, RFID has become popular in the field of remote sensing applications. Location awareness is one of the most important keys to deploying RFID for advanced object tracking. Generally, multiple reference RF stations or additional sensors are used for the location sensing with RFID, but, particularly in indoor environments, spatial layout and cost problems limit the applicability of those approaches. In this paper, we propose a novel method for location sensing with active RFID systems not requiring the need for reference stations or additional sensors. The system triangulates the position of RF signal source using the signal pattern of the loop antenna connected to the power detector. The power detector consists of a signal strength detector and a signal analysis unit. The signal analysis unit indicates the signal strength and serial number using the signal from the strength detector, and provides the direction of the signal to the application target. We designed three different signal analysis units depending on the threshold type. The developed system can sense the direction to the transponder located over 10 m away within the maximum error of $5^{\circ}$. It falls within a reasonable range in our normal office environment.

  • Location-based services have been expanded rapidly in local and overseas markets due to technological advances and increasing applications of wireless internet. Various researches have been made to manage efficiently the location information of moving objects. A basic location-based alert service provides alerting messages automatically when either entering or leaving a specific location and it is expected to become one of the most important location-based services. Location-based alert services require a location polling method to acquire current locations for a large number of moving objects. However, a simple periodical location polling method causes severe system overload because a system should keep updating location information of the moving objects ceaselessly. Most location polling algorithms for location-based alerting services are not suitable for mobile users with dynamic and unsteady moving patterns. In this paper, we propose an improved location polling algorithm for location-based alerting services to reduce the amount of location information acquisition and therefore, to decrease the system load. Various experiments show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for multi-touch tracking using MRF-based particle filters and gesture likelihood estimation Each touch (of one finger) is considered to be one object. One of frequently occurring issues is the hijacking problem which means that an object tracker can be hijacked by neighboring object. If a predicted particle is close to an adjacent object then the particle's weight should be lowered by analysing the influence of neighboring objects for avoiding hijacking problem. We define a penalty function to lower the weights of those particles. MRF is a graph representation where a node is the location of a target object and an edge describes the adjacent relation of target object. It is easy to utilize MRF as data structure of adjacent objects. Moreover, since MRF graph representation is helpful to analyze multi-touch gestures, we describe how to define gesture likelihoods based on MRF. The experimental results show that the proposed method can avoid the occurrence of hijacking problems and is able to estimate gesture likelihoods with high accuracy.

  • Recently, the location based service for moving customers is becoming one of the most important service in mobile communication area and for moving object applications, there are lots of update operations and such update loads are concentrated on some particular area unevenly. The primary processing of LBS application is spatio-temporal range queries and to improve the throughput of spatio-temporal range queries, the time of disk I/O in query processing should be reduced. In this paper, we adopt non-uniform two-level grid index structure, which are designed to minimize update operations. We propose query scheduling technique using spatial relationship and time relationship and a combined spatio-temporal query processing method using time zone concepts to improve the throughput of query processing. Some experimental results are shown for range queries with different query range to show the performance tradeoffs of the proposed methods.

  • Since the indoor location recognition system using RFID is a method for predicting the indoor position, an error occurs due to the surrounding environment such as an obstacle. In this paper, we plan to reduce errors using back propagation neural networks. The neural network adjusts and trains the connection values between the layers to reduce the error between the actual position of the object with the reader and the expected position of the object through the experiment. In this paper, we propose a method that uses the median method and the radiation method as input to the neural network. Among the two methods, we want to find out which method is more effective in recognizing the actual position in an environment with obstacles and reduce the error. Consequently, the method using the median has less error, and we confirmed that the more the number of data, the smaller the error.

  • Telematics and LBS is one of rapidly emerged technology domains. In order to efficiently construct them, moving object technology which manages huge volume of real-time location data is required. Especially, the query which obtains special sorts of information closely related to the detailed applications is required in order to effectively retrieve and analyze the location data for moving object in logistics domain. It has also complex query structure comparing to the conventional database query. The approach using the standard database query language, like SQL, can be considered as an effective alternative choice. In this paper, we not only propose a new query language, entitled as MOQL based on SQL, for the query processing of the vehicle monitoring and control in e-Logistics but also design and implement the query processor.

  • Small mobile devices have become commonplace in our everyday life, from cellular phones to PDAs. Discovering dense regions for the mobile devices is one of the problems of grate practical importance. It can be used in monitoring movement of vehicles, concentration of troops, etc. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm on continuously clustering a large set of mobile objects. We assume that a mobile object reports its position only if it is too far away from the expected position and thus the location data received may be imprecise. To compute the location of each individual object could be costly especially when the number of objects is large. To reduce the complexity of the computation, we want to first cluster objects that are in proximity into a group and treat the members in a group indistinguishable. Each individual object will be examined only when the inaccuracy causes ambiguity in the final results. We conduct extensive experiments on various data sets and analyze the sensitivity and scalability of our algorithms.

  • The converge of location-aware devices, GIS functionalities and the increasing accuracy and availability of positioning technologies pave the way to a range of new types of location-based services. The field of spatiotemporal data mining where relationships are defined by spatial and temporal aspect of data is encountering big challenges since the increased search space of knowledge. Therefore, we aim to propose algorithms for mining spatiotemporal patterns in mobile environment in this paper. Moving patterns are generated utilizing two algorithms called All_MOP and Max_MOP. The first one mines all frequent patterns and the other discovers only maximal frequent patterns. Our proposed approach is able to reduce consuming time through comparison with DFS_MINE algorithm. In addition, our approach is applicable to location-based services such as tourist service, traffic service, and so on.
