  • Wireless sensors are more favorable in measuring structural response compared to conventional sensors in terms of them being easier to use with no issues with cables and them being considerably cheaper. Previous tests have been conducted to analyze the performance of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) sensor in sinusoidal excitation tests. This paper analyzes the performance of in-built MEMS sensors in devices by comparing with an ICP sensor as the reference. Earthquake input amplitude excitation in shaking table tests was done. Results show that MEMS sensors are more accurate in measuring higher input amplitude measurements which range from 100gal to 250gal than at lower input amplitudes which range from 10gal to 50gal. This confirms the results obtained in previous sinusoidal tests. It was also seen that natural frequency results have lower error values which range from 0% to 3.92% in comparison to the response spectra results. This also confirms that in-built MEMS sensors in mobile devices are good at estimating natural frequency of structures. In addition, it was also seen that earthquake input amplitudes with more frequency contents (Gyeongju) had considerably higher error values than Pohang excitation tests which has less frequency contents.

  • Recently satellite SAR techniques have become essential observation tools for various ocean phenomena such as wind, wave, and current. The CMOD4 and CMOD-IFR2 models are used to calculate the magnitude of wind at SAR resolution with no directional information. Combination of the wave-SAR spectrum analysis and the inter-look cross-spectra techniques provides amplitude and direction of the ocean wave over a square-km sized imagette, The Doppler shift measurement of SAR image yields surface speed of the ocean current along the rador looking direction, again at imagette resolution. In this paper we report the development of a SAR Ocean processor (SOP) incorporating all of these techniques. We have applied the SOP to several RADARSAT-1 images of the coast of Korean peninsula and compared the results with oceanographic data, which showed reliability of spaceborne SAR-based oceanographic research.

  • This research concentrates on the influence of non-linearities associated with impact for the nonlinear rocking behavior of rigid block subjected to one dimensional sinusoidal excitation of horizontal direction. The transition of two governing rocking equations, the abrupt reduction in the kinetic energy associated with impact, and sliding motion of block. In this study, two type of rocking vibration system are considered. One is the undamped rocking vibration system, disregarding energy dissipation at impact and the other is the damped rocking system, including energy dissipation and sliding motion. The response analysis using non-dimensional rocking equation is carried out for the change of excitation parameters and friction coefficient. The chaos responses were discovered in the wide response region, particularly, for the case of high excitation amplitude and their chaos characteristics were examined by the time history, Poincare map, power spectra and Lyapunov Exponent of rocking responses. The complex behavior of chaos response, in the phase space, were illustrated by Poincare map. The bifurcation diagram and Poincare map were shown to be effective in order to understand chaos of rocking system.

  • Optical filters with graded index profiles are designed by applying the fourier transform to a riccati equation which governs the reflection and transmission characteristics of inhomogeneous refractive index distributions. The inhomogeneous refractive index profile of an optical filter with specified target spectrum is obtained through iterations. The spectra response of the inhomogeneous refractive index layers are analyzed by using runge-dutta numerical method to solve the differential euations of the amplitude and the phase of reflection coefficient derived from the riccati equation and the results are in good agreement with the resutls obtained by using matrix method.

  • With upcoming high-quality data from surveys such as eBOSS or DESI, improving the theoretical modeling and gaining a deeper understanding of the effects of neutrinos and dark radiation on structure formation at small scales are necessary, to obtain robust constraints free from systematic biases. Using a novel suite of hydrodynamical simulations that incorporate dark matter, baryons, massive neutrinos, and dark radiation, we present a detailed study of their impact on Lyman-Alpha forest observables. In particular, we accurately measure the tomographic evolution of the shape and amplitude of the small-scale matter and flux power spectra and search for unique signatures along with preferred scales where a neutrino mass detection may be feasible. We then investigate the thermal state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) through the temperature-density relation. Our results indicate that the IGM at z ~ 3 provides the best sensitivity to active and sterile neutrinos.

  • We analyze the Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background temperature fluctuation data to find any anomaly in the angular power spectra measured for partial regions on the sky. For disks with radius of $20^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, which are densely overlapping on the sky, we estimate the power excess and its statistical significance relative to the LambdaCDM expectation for some chosen ranges of angular scales. We also investigate the dipolar asymmetry using the power excess maps obtained for some chosen angular scales, and confirm the previously announced consistent dipole directions. The average dipole amplitude and the inner products of dipoles have been measured from the power excess maps at different angular scales. We conclude that although dipole directions are consistent the measured amplitudes are not statistically significant compared to the LambdaCDM model prediction.

  • It is very important to evaluate the surface or subsurface microstructure because of their influences on mechanical properties of materials. Surface SH-wave which is horizontally polarized shear wave traveling along near surface and subsurface layer is an attractive technique for material evaluation. The destructive method is widely used for the estimation of material degradation but it has a great difficulty in preparing specimens from in-service industrial facilities. In this study, nondestructive evaluation for degraded structural materials used at high temperature though surface SH-wave method is discussed. 2.25Cr-1Mo steel specimens which were prepared by the isothermal aging heat treatment at $650^{\circ}$ were evaluated though ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation techniques investigating the change of sound velocity, attenuation coefficient and amplitude spectra. In addition, it has verified experimentally the frequency-dependence of attenuation coefficient though wavelet analysis method.

  • On the assumption that the voices of the cows are produced by the linear prediction filter, we characterized the cows' voices. The order of this filter is determined by examining the voices characteristics both in time and frequency domains. The proposed order of the linear prediction filter is 15 for modeling voice production of the cow. The combination of the two parameters of the fundamental frequency, the slope of the straight line regressed from the log-log spectra of the amplitude-envelope and the only one coefficient involved in the linear prediction filter can differentiate the two cows.
