  • Cooperative relaying permits one or more relay to transmit a signal from the source to the destination, thereby increasing network coverage and spectral efficiency. The performance of cooperative relaying is often measured as outage probability. However, appropriate measure for the channel quality is outage capacity. Although the outage probability for cooperative relaying protocol has been analyzed before, very little research has been addressed for the outage capacity. This paper is the first of its kind to derive a closed-form analytical solution of outage capacity using fixed decode and forward relaying and amplify and forward relaying in dissimilar Rayleigh fading channels, considering channel coefficients known to the receiver side. The analytical results show a tradeoff between the SNR and the number of relays for specific outage capacity. A comparison between decode and forward relaying and amplify and forward relaying shows that decode and forward relaying outperforms amplify and forward relaying for a large number of relays.

  • In this paper, we derive the theoretical Symbol Error Probability (SEP) of cooperative systems with best relay selection for Nakagami-m fading channels. For Amplify and Forward (AF) relaying, the selected relay offers the best instantaneous Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of the relaying link (source-relay-destination). In cooperative networks using Decode and Forward (DF), the selected relay offers the best instantaneous SNR of the link between the relay and the destination among the relays that have correctly decoded the transmitted information by the source. In the second part of the paper, we derive the SEP when all participating AF and DF relaying is performed. In the last part of the paper, we extend our results to cognitive radio networks where there is interference constraints : only relays that generate interference to primary receiver lower than a predefined threshold T can transmit. Both AF and DF relaying with and without relay selection are considered.

  • This paper investigates the impact of outdated channel state information (CSI) on the performance of the incremental amplify-and-forward (AF) opportunistic relaying (OR) over dual-hop Rayleigh fading channels. According to the definition of distribution function, we obtain the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the actual combined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) received at the destination. Based on this CDF, the closed-form expressions of the average spectral efficiency and outage probability are derived for the incremental AF OR under outdated CSI. Numerical results show that in the low region of the average SNR of the direct link, outdated CSI deteriorates the system performance, whereas in the high region, outdated CSI has almost no impact on the system performance.

  • In this paper, we evaluate performance of a hybrid decode-amplify-forward relaying protocol in underlay cognitive radio. In the proposed protocol, a secondary relay which is chosen by partial relay selection method helps a transmission between a secondary source and a secondary destination. In particular, if the chosen relay decodes the secondary source's signal successfully, it will forward the decoded signal to the secondary destination. Otherwise, it will amplify the signal received from the secondary source and will forward the amplified signal to the secondary destination. We evaluate the performance of our scheme via theory and simulation. Results show that the proposed protocol outperforms the amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward protocols in terms of outage probability.

  • A two-way relaying (TWR) system is analyzed, where two source terminals with unequal numbers of antennas exchange data via an amplify-and-forward relay terminal with a single antenna. In the system considered herein, the link quality between the sources and relay can generally be asymmetric due to the nonidentical antenna configuration, power allocation, and relay location. In such a general setup, accurate bounds on the average sum rate (ASR) are derived when beamforming or orthogonal space time block coding is employed at the sources. We show that the proposed bounds are almost indistinguishable from the exact ASR under various system configurations. It is also observed that the ASR performance of the TWR system with unequal numbers of source antennas is more sensitive to the relay location than to the power allocation.

  • Differential detection schemes do not require any channel estimation, which can be employed under user mobility with low computational complexity. In this work, a soft-input soft-output (SISO) differential detection algorithm is proposed for amplify-and-forward (AF) over time-varying relaying channels based cooperative communications system. Furthermore, maximum-likelihood (ML) detector for M-ary differential Phase-shift keying (DPSK) is derived to calculate a posteriori probabilities (APP) of information bits. In addition, when the SISO is exploited in conjunction with channel decoding, iterative detection and decoding approach by exchanging extrinsic information with outer code is obtained. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed non-coherent approach improves detection performance significantly. In particular, the system can obtain greater performance gain under fast-fading channels.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid decode-amplify-forward incremental cooperative diversity protocol using SNR-based relay selection. In the proposed protocol, whenever destination unsuccessfully receives the source's signal, one of relays that exploit hybrid decode-amplify-forward technique is chosen to retransmit the signal. We derive approximate closed-form expressions of outage probability and average channel capacity. Monte-Carlo simulations are presented to verify the theoretical results and compare the performance of the proposed protocol with the direct transmission protocol and conventional incremental relaying protocols.

  • In this paper, we study scheduling schemes for two-user two-way wireless relaying systems. Two transmission modes are considered: point-to-point direct transmission and two-way amplify-and-forward relaying. An optimal scheduling scheme that opportunistically selects the best transmission mode for each user is proposed to minimize the sum bit error rate (BER). The performance lower bound of the optimal scheduling scheme is analyzed, and closed-form expression of the lower-bound BER is derived. However, for optimal scheduling, the scheduler requires the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) of all links. To reduce the feedback information of CSI, we also propose a suboptimal scheduling scheme that selects the transmission mode using only the CSI of two direct links. Simulation results show that there are 4 dB to 8 dB gains for the proposed optimal and suboptimal schemes over the fixed direct transmission and fixed two-way relayed transmission scheme. The performance gap between the optimal and suboptimal scheduling schemes is small, which implies a good trade-off between implementation complexity and system performance.

  • The deployment of an incremental hybrid decode-amplify and forward relaying scheme is a promising and superior solution for cellular networks to meet ever-growing network traffic demands. However, the selection of a suitable relaying protocol based on the signal-to-noise ratio threshold is important in realizing an improved quality of service. In this paper, an incremental hybrid relaying protocol is proposed using polar codes. The proposed protocol achieves a better performance than existing turbo codes in terms of capacity. Simulation results show that the polar codes through an incremental hybrid decode-amplify-and-forward relay can provide a 38% gain when ${\gamma}_{th(1)}$ and ${\gamma}_{th(2)}$ are optimal. Further, the channel capacity is improved to 17.5 b/s/Hz and 23 b/s/Hz for $2{\times}2$ MIMO and $4{\times}4$ MIMO systems, respectively. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to achieve the optimal solution.
