It has been observed that the cooling capacity of an impinging water jet is affected by the seasonal conditions in large-scale steel manufacturing processes. To confirm this phenomenon, cooling experiments utilizing a hot steel plate cooled by a laminar jet were conducted for two initial ambient air temperatures (10$^{\circ}C$ and 40$^{\circ}C$) in a closed chamber, performing an inverse heat conduction method for quantitative comparison. This study reveals that the cooling capacity at an air temperature of 10$^{\circ}C$ is lower than the heat extracted at 40$^{\circ}C$. The amount of total extracted heat at 10$^{\circ}C$ is 15% less than at 40$^{\circ}C$ , These results Indicate the quantity of water vapor, absorbed until saturation, affects the mechanism of boiling heat transfer.

This study was performed to find out how much water the cement hydration reaction need. It is real situation that it is difficult to find out the amount of chemical combined water with stoichiometric chemical reaction form. Because several variation occurred during hydration reaction it's not easy to divide water which used at cement paste mixture. In this study high temperature(105$^{\circ}C$) dry method was used to divide evaporable water and non-evaporable water. The last is combined water chemically and some free water absorbed to products of hydration physically. The test was processed with variation of water cement ratio from 10% to 45% with 5% intervals. The weight of cement paste specimens were measured after dry for 72hours at each checking time(0.5, 1, 3, 5, 10, 24, 48, 72, 168hour). In this study some conclusions such as follows were derived. Firstly, Pure combined water contents required at cement hydration result in 23.3percent of the weight of cement. Secondly, The sufficient mixing water needed to fully hydrated cement result in about 40∼45percent of weight of cement. That is, gel pores water could be about 16.7∼21.7percent of weight of cement.

IInsulation material is generally used for preventing heat loss from heat transport fluids, and water absorption severely reduces the insulation property. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the amount of water absorption supplied by the pouring method and spraying method, to investigate the effects of water absorption on the thermal conductivity of an insulation material, and modeling the relation between water absorption and thermal conductivity. E-glass, a kind of glass fiber, and HYPERLITE, mainly composed of pearlite, are selected, to compare hygroscopic and insulation properties. E-glass is found to have much higher water absorptivity, compared to HYPERLITE. The thermal conductivity of the water-absorbed E-glass is increased by more than 150%, compared to that of no absorption, while variation of the thermal conductivity of HYPERLITE with water absorption is insignificant. A three-stage model of water absorption for thermal conductivity is developed, and the modeling results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.
Removal of water pollutants by water hyacinth was examined with two nutrients, $NO_3$-N, $PO_4$-P and four heavy metals, Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr under laboratory conditions. $NO_3$-N was reduced to 0.7, 0.9 and 1.2 ppm, and 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 ppm in $NO_4$-P from 10, 25 and 50 ppm 3 days after treatment, respectively. Among heavy metals Cu and Pb were removed faster and higher than Cd and Cr and also amount of heavy metals absorbed by water hyacinth was higher in the order of Cu > Pb > Cr > Cd. Distribution of heavy metals in this plant was higher in roots than in leaves and amount absorbed in roots was related to the treated concentrations. The harmful effect on growth of water hyacinth was observed in Cu and Cd.

A series of laboratory tests was performed with soil-columns which were compacted with sands and different amount of silt collected from the mid-stream of Gumgang, Korea. A known degree of concentration of PCP(Pentachlorophenol) was poured into the soil-columns and concentration of PCP was monitored and analyzed with time and depth. The results of the study are summarized as follows : 1. PCP was transported into soil along with the movement of moisture under gravitational force. The amount of PCP transported through soil or absorbed by soil varied with soil types. 2. The great amount of PCP was remained at 4~8cm section for the specimen No.2 and at 0~4cm section for the specimen Nos. 3 and 4. Based upon this result it is said that the amount of silt between 30 and 40% may be a threshold value for PCP transported through soil. 3. The amount of PCP remained in the specimen Nos. 2, 3 and 4 is greater than that in the specimen No.1 due to high specific surface of silt and high attraction force between PCP and silt particles in the specimen Nos. 2, 3 and 4. 4. It is said that groundwater under highly permeable soil layer such as specimen No.1 is easily polluted by PCP. That is because the PCP is basically migrated with water under the gravitational force.
The magnetite ferrofluids of which solvents are water or kerosene have been prepared by making surfactant absorbed on the surface of the magnetite which have been synthesized by air oxidation of Fe(OH)2 at pH 11 and 75$^{\circ}C$, and their basic properties have been measured by XRD, SEM, DTA, TG, viscometer, magnetometer and B-H tracer. The results are as follows ; 1) The shape of magnetite prepared by air oxidation is found to be sphere-like shape and its particle size is smaller than 200A. 2) The maximum amount of sodium oleate adsorbed on the surface of magnetite is about 20% in the weight of the magnetite including the adsorbed sodium oleate. And when magnetite is well dispersed into solvent, R(the weight ratio of the added sodium oleate to Fe3O4) is 0.40-0.48. 3) The dispersion ratio, the viscosity and the magnetization of magnetite ferrofluid are constant regardless of the added amount of sodium oleate above R=0.40-0.48. 4) The magnetic hysteresis curves of magnetite ferrofluid show superparamagnetism-like behavior.

The biodegradation and water absorption properties of lignin/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibrous webs are investigated. Lignin/PVA nanofibrous webs containing 0, 50, and 85wt% of lignin were prepared via an electrospinning process to observe the effect of the lignin concentration on the biodegradability and water absorption properties of lignin/PVA nanofibrous webs. The morphology of the materials was examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). To understand the wetting behavior and hydrophilic nature of the electrospun lignin/PVA nanofibrous webs, the water absorbency, contact angle, and water uptake were examined. The enzymatic degradation of lignin/PVA nanofibrous webs was investigated using laccase by measuring total organic carbon (TOC) concentration over a course of 50 days. Water drops were absorbed immediately into all of the specimens. The water uptake of lignin/PVA nanofibrous webs increased as the amount of PVA in the lignin/PVA hybrid webs increased. The enzymatic degradation experiment indicated that the inherent biodegradability of lignin was retained after its transformation into nanofibers. Our findings imply that blending these two types of polymers is promising because it can lead to the development of a new range of multifunctional materials such as antimicrobial absorbent nanotextiles based on sustainable biopolymers.
In this paper, the difference of the property of absorption and desorption for five species in semi-steady state are studied. The species used are listed in Table 1 and the dimension of specimen was $8\times8{\times}T$(Tangential direction)cm and tested in various conditions. A change of average moisture content with time were measured in each cycles. The results obtained are summarized as follows. When the relative humidity in air was maximum or minimum, the distribution of moisture In wood of all specimens were illustrated by exponential curves of decrease or increased from lace 10 center of wood. From the consideration of coefficient of decrease(C), the amount of moisture change of spruce was larger than the others. The pheonomenon was considered no relation to the specific gravity in air dry, but the wood structures. The velocity of the absorption and desorption for species decreased in the order spruce(Picea sitchensis) neodobam(Fagus crenata), solsong(Tsuga heterophylla), meranti(Shorea sp.) and kaesoo(Cercidiphyllum japoicum). In case of constant temperature and water vapor pressure is changed. the amount of absorbed moisture was larger than that of constant water vapor pressure and temperature vaned. In this fact, it is considered that the property of sorption of wood is strongly influenced by vapor pressure gradient than temperature gradient.

Effects of a non-absorbable gas on the absorption process in a vertical tube absorber has been investigated numerically. The water vapor mixed with air is absorbed into LiBr/water solution film. The flow is assumed to be laminar and fully developed in both liquid and gas phases. The diffusion and energy equations were solved in both phases to give the temperature and concentrations, from which heat and mass fluxes were determined. The local absorption rate has been shown to decrease as the mass fraction of air in the water vapor increases. The vapor pressure of water at the liquid-vapor is interface reduced significantly since the non-absorbable gas accumulates near the interface. The effects of non-absorbable gases on absorption rate become larger as the mass flow rate of the vapor decreases. For a small amount of non-absorbable gases, the total absorption rate of water vapor increases as the mass flow rate of the vapor decreases. The total absorption rate increases as the mass flow rate of the vapor increases for large concentrations of non-absorbable gases at the inlet of an absorber.

In spite of various applications of chitin derivatives from waste marine sources, commercial use of chitin has been limited due to resistance to chemicals and the absense of proper solvents. We prepared chitin through decalcification, bleaching and deproteination from protunus trituberculatus shells by the application of Hackman's method. Structural and chemical properties of chitin were investigated to have proper specific surface area and particle size by IR, BET and PSA. The amount of absorbed water of chitin reached equilibrium by stirring about 15 minutes. The amount of absored water of the prepared chitin were large than the commercial chitin. When prepared chitin tested on dyeing wastewater, they showed better treatment efficiency in COD, suspended solid, and color tests than the commercial chitin. The adsorption capacity increased with decreasing particle size for the prepared chitin. Treatment efficiency for color was increased as the sitirring rate increased. Results show the possibility of the prepared chitin from waste marine sources as a treatment system for dyeing wastewater.
