Heavy ions have a high potential for destroying deep tumors that carry the highest dose at the peak of Bragg. The peak caused by a single-energy carbon beam is too narrow, which requires special measures for improvement. Here, carbon-12 (12C) ion with different energies has been used as a source for calculating the dose distribution in the water phantom, soft tissue and bone by the code of Monte Carlobased FLUKA code. By increasing the energy of the initial beam, the amount of absorbed dose at Bragg peak in all three targets decreased, but the trend for this reduction was less severe in bone. While the maximum absorbed dose per bone-mass unit in energy of 200 MeV/u was about 30% less than the maximum absorbed dose per unit mass of water or soft tissue, it was merely 2.4% less than soft tissue in 400 MeV/u. The simulation result showed a good agreement with experimental data at GSI Darmstadt facility of biophysics group by 0.15 cm average accuracy in Bragg peak positioning. From 200 to 400 MeV/u incident energy, the Bragg peak location increased about 18 cm in soft tissue. Correspondingly, the bone and soft tissue revealed a reduction dose ratio by 2.9 and 1.9. Induced neutrons did not contribute more than 1.8% to the total energy deposited in the water phantom. Also during 12C ion bombardment, secondary fragments showed 76% and 24% of primary 200 and 400 MeV/u, respectively, were present at the Bragg-peak position. The combined treatment of carbon ions with neutron or electron beams may be more effective in local dose delivery and also treating malignant tumors.
The water permeation in protective coatings, which may greatly influence the corrosion protective property of these coatings, was studied using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. During the absorption of water in protective coatings immersed in electrolyte solution, the change of coating capacitance with concentration of electrolyte was determined from impedance measurements. When water absorption or desorption of coatings occured by exposing the coatings to electrolyte solutions of different concentration, increase in impedance caused by desorption of water was found to be higher in the case of thicker film. The amount of water absorbed in coatings changed with concentration of electrolyte. The water taken up in coatings from the solution of lower electrolyte concentration was deserted by contact with the solution of higher concentration. The uptake of water in protective coatings varied depending on the type of coating ingredient especially binder.
Recently, various types of towels and dishcloth dryer products are being widely distributed in Korea. Evaluation methods for water absorption properties of various fabrics have been developed, and there are many studies using them. This study newly intended that whether it is possible to obtain data that can quantitatively analyze the water absorption characteristics of various fabrics, to show the correlation between the water absorption height and the amount of water (water holdup) absorbed, and to experimentally suggest the applicability to evaluate the drying capacity of towel dryer using IR camera. Through these experiments, it was confirmed that quantitative data on the water absorption height of various fabrics can be measured using an IR camera and can be clearly applied to the performance evaluation of actual products.

In this study, the cell-wall microstructure and anti-swelling effectiveness (ASE) of heat-treated larch wood were evaluated and the correlation between them was analyzed. For this purpose, some larch lumbers were heat-treated for 12, 18, and 24 hours at temperatures of 190℃ and 220℃. By observing the scanning electron microscopy cross-sectional image of the heat-treated larch, it was confirmed that the shape of heat-treated wood cell changed, the cut-section of the wood cell wall was rough, and the intercellular space has become wide as the intercellular bonds had broken because of heat-treatment. In addition, the evaluation of the swelling for each treatment condition revealed that, as the heat-treatment temperature and duration increased, the amount of absorbed water and swelling decreased and the ASE increased. The decrease in the amount of absorbed water is thought to be affected by the chemical change in the cell wall by heat-treatment. On the contrary, the decrease in the swelling and the increase in the ASE are thought to be due to a combination of chemical changes and physical changes such as structural changes in the cell wall.

Purpose: The proficiency test was conducted to assess the performance of the dosimetry audit service provider in the readout practice of the dose delivered to patients in medical institutions. Methods: A certain amount of the absorbed dose to water for the high-energy X-ray from the medical linear accelerator (LINAC) installed in the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) was delivered to the postal dose audit package given by the dosimetry audit service provider, in which the radio-photoluminescence (RPL) glass dosimeters were mounted. The dosimetry audit service provider read the RPL glass dosimeters and sent the readout dose value with its uncertainty to KRISS. The performance of the dosimetry audit service provider was evaluated based on the En number given in ISO/IEC 17043:2010. Results: The evaluated En number was -0.954. Based on the ISO/IEC 17043, the performance of the dosimetry service provider is "satisfactory." Conclusions: As part of the conformity assessment, the KRISS performed the proficiency test over the postal dose audit practice run by the dosimetry audit service provider. The proficiency test is in line with confirming the traceability of the medical institutions to the primary standard of absorbed dose to the water of the KRISS and ensuring the confidence of the dosimetry audit service provider.

In this paper, mechanical property of electric epoxy with water aging was discussed. We studied mechanical property of elastic resin after absorption in water from 0 to 484 hour. As a result, diffusion factor of elastic epoxy showed $20-21{\times}10^{-4}mm^2/s$ and general epoxy showed $9.5{\times}10^{-4}mm^2/s$. Elastic property increased linearly according to amount of addictives and decreased elastic property according to amount of water absorption. Tensile strength was reduced to add to addictives. It was effected by water absorption of micro-void of elastic epoxy. Hardness inclined to decrease after increasing according to absorbed time.

This experiment was carried out to study on the effect of greenhouse heating by water-to-water heat pump system employing heating water tank(ground water) as the heat source. Followings are the results obtained from this study ; 1. The heat amount absorbed from evaporator and the heat amount rejected from condenser were approximately 9, 000~ 12, 000kcal/h and 13, 000~ 17, OOOkcal/h, respectively. 2. The heat efficiencies of evaporator and condenser used in this experiment were approximately 79% and 83%, respectively. 3. The maximum heating load estimated for the experimental greenhouse was about 18, 000 ~ 25, OOOkcal/h, which was found to be about 28 ~ 32% higher than the heating capacity of the heat pump system adopted for this experiment. 4. The coefficients of performance(COP) for the heat pump and the total heat pump system were approximately 2.9~3.5 and 1.5~2.4, respectively. 5. The coefficient of performance(COP) calculated from the Mollier Diagram was about 3.2 ~ 3.4, which was reasonably close to the COP estimated on the basis of measured values. 6. The temperature of experimental greenhouse heated by the heat pump system could be maintained about 12~15 。C higher than that of a control greenhouse.
Biomarkers identify various stages and interactions on the pathway from exposure to disease. The three categories of biomarkers are those measuring susceptibility, exposure and effect. Susceptibility biomarkers are identifiable genetic variations affecting absorption, metabolism or response to environmental agents. Biomarkers of exposure indicate the amount of a foreign compound that is absorbed into the body. Biological measurements performed on human tissues are vastly expanding the capabilities of classical epidemiology, which has relied primarily on estimates of human exposure derived form chemical levels in the air, water, and other exposure routes. The biomarker response is typical of chemical pollution by specific classes of compound, such as (i) heavy metals (mercury, cadmium, lead, zinc), responsible for the induction of metallothionein synthesis, and (ii) organochlorinated pollutants (PCBs, dioxins, DDT congeners) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which induce the mixed function oxygenase (MFO) involved in their bio transformations and elimination. Currently genomic researches are developed in human cDNA clone subarrays oriented toward the expression of genes involved in responses to xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes, cell cycle components, oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, DNA repair genes, estrogen-responsive genes, oxidative stress genes, and genes known to be involved in apoptotic cell death. Several research laboratories in Korea for kicking off these Environmental Genomics were summarized.
In order to utilize cinder melting slag as a filter media to control the quality of early rainwater, its environmental stability was verified by heavy metal elution experiment and improved by pre-treatment. Possibilities of improving its function as an absorbent was considered. Absorption characteristics of melting slag before and after the pre-treatment were analyzed by heavy metal equilibrium and stationary-phase column experiments, which in turn were analyzed by comparison experiment with activated carbon. As a result of heavy metal elution experiment, every metal item existed in a much lower amount than the criteria or was not detected, implying that there is no problem recycling it. Absorption equilibrium experiment showed that the time for pre-treatment melting slag to reach the equilibrium was reduced, while the absorbed amount was greatly increased. Stationary-phase column experiment assures us that the elimination rate was not changed much by influx rate, pH and the change in packing volume rate, indicating that this melting slag can be used not only as a filter media to control the quality of early rainwater but also in many areas of water-processing.
This paper describes the results of study on major factors influencing time-dependent deformation behaviour of swelling shales. The study was carried out by analyzing all the swell test results available for shales from southern Ontario. Major factors studied are (1) the presence of ambient water, (2) calcite content and (3) the applied stress. The results of the study on seven shales show that the swelling of shale is associated with the formation of cracks and the absorption of water in these cracks. The magnitude of swelling potential is related linearly to the amount of absorbed water. The presence of calcite inhibits the swelling of shales studied, reducing the swelling to zero at about 30% of calcite content. All the shales studied exhibit the stress-dependent swelling behaviour, though there Is a difference in the degree of dependency.
