  • Amophization and decomposition behaviour in $Mg_{62}Cu_{26}Y_{12}$ alloy prepared by melt spinning method and wedge type metal mold casting method have been investigated by a detailed transmission electron microscopy. Amorphous phase has formed in melt-spun ribbon. In the case of the wedge type specimen, however, the amorphous phase has formed only around the tip area within about 2 mm thickness. The remaining part of the wedge type specimen consists of crystalline phases, $Mg_{2}Cu\;and\;Cu_{2}Y$. The supercooling for crystallization behaviour of the amorphous $Mg_{62}Cu_{26}Y_{12}$ alloy, ${\Delta}T_x$ has been measured to be about 60 K. Such a large undercooling of the crystallization bahaviour enables formation of the amorphous phase in the $Mg_{62}Cu_{26}Y_{12}$ alloy under the cooling rate of $10^{2}K/s$. The amorphous $Mg_{62}Cu_{26}Y_{12}$ has decomposed into crystalline phases, $Mg_{2}Cu\;and\;Cu_{2}Y$ after heat treatment at $170^{\circ}C\;and\;250^{\circ}C$.

  • Since amorphous alloys have been known to have better mechanical and chemical properties than crystalline alloys of the same composition, a great number of studies on the formation of Al-based amorphous alloys have been carried out actively. However, little has been obtained about the effect of Rare-Earth metal and Transition metal addition on amorphous phase formed by melt spinning method. This study included fabrication of amorphous alloy $Al_{85}Ce_5Ni_{10}$ by melt spinning methods and DTA, XRD, TEM analysis to determine crystalization behavoir. Annealing treatments were carried out in Ar atmosphere under isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. The diffraction pattern of non-heated ribbons showed broad form characteristic of glass metallic alloy. The crystallization of amorphous $Al_{85}Ce_5Ni_{10}$ takes place eutedtoidly by homogeneous formation of Al and MS-1, followed by precipitation of the $Al_{11}Ce_3$ and later $MS-1{\rightarrow}Al_3Ni$ transformation.

  • Ni-based amorphous alloy ribbon was prepared by a single-roller melt-spinning technique. Palladium coating was found to enhance significantly the absorption/desorption behavior of hydrogen in amorphous alloy. The hydrogen permeability of a Pd-coated $(Ni_{60}Nb_{40}){_{100-X}}$TaX(x=5, 10) amorphous alloy was examined in the temperature range of $623{\sim}773K$, comparable with those of $Pd_{60}-Cu_{40}$ alloys. The permeated hydrogen flux was increased with increasing the temperature and the difference of hydrogen pressure between the feed side and permeates side of the membrane. The Ni-based amorphous alloys were characterized by X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The morphology of surface and roughness was observed by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and atomic force microscopy(AFM).

  • In commercial Zr-Nb-Cu-Ni-Al amorphous alloys, expensive element, Zr, was substituted to Sn which was cheaper one, and then, glass forming ability, compressive strength and hardness of them were estimated. Even though the Sn was added up to 1.5%, resulting phase was not changed to the crystalline form. It was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and thermal analyses. In the X-ray profiles, there were no peaks for crystalline phases and typical halo pattern for amorphous phase was appeared at the diffraction angle of $35^{\circ}{\sim}45^{\circ}$. Thermal analyses also showed that the Sn modified alloys were corresponded to the amorphous standards where ${\delta}T$(= Tx - Tg) and Trg(= Tg/Tm) affecting to the amorphous forming ability were more than 50K and 0.60 respectively. Compressive strengths were 1.77 GPa, 1.63 GPa, 1.65 GPa and 1.77 GPa for 0%Sn, 0.5%Sn, 1.0%Sn and 1.5%Sn respectively. Hardnesses of the Sn modified alloys were decreased from 752 Hv to 702 Hv in 1.0%Sn and recovered to 746 Hv in 1.5%Sn.

  • The phase transition between amorphous and crystalline states in chalcogenide semiconductor films can controlled by electric pulses or pulsed laser beam; hence some chalcogenide semiconductor films can be applied to electrically write/erase nonvolatile memory devices, where the low conductive amorphous state and the high conductive crystalline state are assigned to binary states. Memory switching in chalcogenides is mostly a thermal process, which involves phase transformation from amorphous to crystalline state. The nonvolatile memory cells are composed of a simple sandwich (metal/chalcogenide/metal). It was formed that the threshold voltage depends on thickness, electrode distance, annealing time and temperature, respectively.

  • PAS(Plasma Activated Sintering) process was tried to apply for the fabrication of BMG(Bulk Metallic Glasses) of $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_5}\;and\;Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_3Sn_2$ from the as-atomized amorphous powder. Compressive strength for the BMG(bulk Metallic Glasses) of $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_5$ were lower than those of BMG rods produced by warm extrusion ,or copper mold casting method. Microstructural examination by optical microcope, SEM ana EDS showed that oxidation had occurred during PASintering. In order to prevent the powder from the oxidation during PASintering, Ni coating for $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_5$ amorphous powder by electroless-plating method was performed. Microstructural examination for Ni coated layers after PASintering indicated that the Ni coating had been so effective to prevent powder from oxidation during PASintering. Sintering behaviors of $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_3Sn_2$ represent the same as those of $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_5$.

  • Bulk amorphous materials have been intensively studied to apply for various advanced industry fields due to their high mechanical, chemical and electrical properties. These materials have been produced by several techniques such as mechanical alloying, melt spinning and gas atomization, etc. Among them, the atomization is the most potential technique for commercialization due to high cooling rate during solidification of the melt and mass productivity. However, the amorphous powders still have some limitations because of their low ductility and toughness. Therefore, intensive efforts have to be carried out to increase the ductility and toughness. In this study, the Ni-based amorphous powder was produced by the gas atomization process. And in order to increase the ductile toughness, ductile Cu phase was coated on the Ni amorphous powder by spray drying process. The characteristics of the as-synthesis powders have been examined and briefly mentioned. The master alloy with $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{16}Si_2Sn_3$ was prepared by vacuum induction melting furnace with graphite crucible and mold. The atomization was conducted at $1450^{\circ}C$ under the vacuum of $10^{-2}$ torr. The gas pressure during atomization was varied from 35 to 50 bars. After making the Ni amorphous powders, the spray drying was processed to produce the Cu -coated Ni amorphous composite powder. The amorphous powder and Cu nitrate solution were mixed together with a small amount of binder and then it was sprayed at temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ and rotating speed of 15,000 R.P.M.

  • Recently, investigation on metallization is a key for a stretchable display. Amorphous metal such as Ni and Zr based amorphous metal compounds are introduced for a suitable material with superelastic property under certain stress condition. However, Ni and Zr based amorphous metals have too high resistivity for a display device's interconnectors. In addition, these metals are not suitable for display process chemicals. Therefore, we choose an aluminum based amprhous metal Al-Mo as a interconnector of stretchable display. In this paper, Amorphous Forming Composition Range (AFCR) for Al-Mo alloys are calculated by Midema's model, which is between 0.1 and 0.25 molybdenum, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The elongation tests revealed that amorphous Al-20Mo alloy thin films exhibit superior stretchability compared to pure Al thin films, with significantly less increase in resistivity at a 10% strain. This excellent resistance to hillock formation in the Al20Mo alloy is attributed to the recessed diffusion of aluminum atoms in the amorphous phase, rather than in the crystalline phase, as well as stress distribution and relaxation in the aluminum alloy. Furthermore, according to the AES depth profile analysis, the amorphous Al-Mo alloys are completely compatible with existing etching processes. The alloys exhibit fast etch rates, with a reasonable oxide layer thickness of 10 nm, and there is no diffusion of oxides in the matrix. This compatibility with existing etching processes is an important advantage for the industrial production of stretchable displays.

  • The effect of annealing temperature on the permeability and giant magneto-impedance (GMI) behaviors of $Fe_{68.5}Mn_{5}Si_{13.5}B_9Nb_3Cu_1$ amorphous alloy has been systematically investigated. The nanocrystalline $Fe_{68.5}Mn_{5}Si_{13.5}B_9Nb_3Cu_1$ alloys consisting of ultra-fine $(Fe,Mn)_3Si$ grains embedded in an amorphous matrix were obtained by annealing their precursor alloy at the temperature range from $500^{\circ}C\;to\;600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in vacuum. The permeability and GMI profiles were measured as a function of external magnetic field. It was found that the increase of both the permeability and the GMI effect with increasing annealing temperature up to $535^{\circ}C$ was observed and ascribed to the ultrasoft magnetic properties in the sample, whereas an opposite tendency was found when annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ which is due to the microstructural changes caused by high-temperature annealing. The study of temperature dependence on the permeability and GMI effect showed some insights into the nature of the magnetic exchange coupling between nanocrystallized grains through the amorphous boundaries in nanocrystalline magnetic materials.

  • A new Fe-Cr-Mo-B-C amorphous alloy is designed, which offers high mechanical strength, corrosion resistance as well as high glass-forming ability and its gas-atomized amorphous powder is deposited on an ASTM A213-T91 steel substrate using the high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) process. The hybrid coating layer, consisting of nanocrystalline and amorphous phases, exhibits strong bonding features with the substrate, without revealing significant pore formation. By the coating process, it is possible to obtain a dense structure in which pores are hardly observed not only inside the coating layer but also at the interface between the coating layer and the substrate. The coating layer exhibits good adhesive strength as well as good wear resistance, making it suitable for coating layers for biomass applications.
