  • The electrochemical investigation of N,N-bis (2,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-3,4,9,10 perylenebis (dicarboximide) laser dye have been carried out using cyclic voltammetry and convolution - deconvolution voltammetry combined with digital simulation technique at a platinum electrode in 0.1 mol/L tetrabutyl ammonium perchlorate (TBAP) in solvent 1,2 dichloroethane ($CH_2Cl-CH_2Cl$). The investigated dye was reduced via consumption of two sequential electrons to form radical anion and dianion (EE mechanism). In switching the potential to positive scan, the compound was oxidized by loss of two electrons, which were followed by a fast aggregation process ($EC_1EC_2$ mechanism). The electrode reaction pathway and the chemical and electrochemical parameters of the investigated compound were determined using cyclic voltammetry and convolutive voltammetry. The extracted electrochemical parameters were verified and confirmed via digital simulation method.

  • Spherical DADNE/AP (1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethylen/ammonium perchlorate) energetic composites were produced by drowning-out/agglomeration (D/A). The agglomeration of DADNE with AP particles was found to be affected by the amount of the bridging liquid, stirring velocity and residence time. The composites appeared to grow dramatically with the amount of bridging liquid which triggers agglomeration. As the stirring velocity and the residence time increased, the size of composites increased and then tended to decrease. Thermal gravimetric analysis showed that the addition of DADNE activates the low temperature decomposition (LTD) of AP. For the neat AP, the only about 30 wt% of AP was found to decompose at the LTD. On the other hand, it was found that 70 wt% of AP decomposed when DADNE was added by physical mixing and 90 wt% of AP decomposed when the DADNE/AP composites were prepared by the D/A method.

  • Pentadentate Schiff base molybdenum(Ⅴ) complexes such as [Mo(Ⅴ)O(Sal-DET)(NCS)] and [Mo(Ⅴ)O(Sal-DPT)(NCS)] were synthesized by Sabat method. The structure of these complexes were identified by elemental analysis, spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis(T.G.A.). It was found that the mole ratio of Schiff base ligand to the complexes was found to be 1 : 1. The redox processes of the complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetric and differential pulse polarographic technique in nonaqueous solvent containing 0. 1 M tetraethyl ammonium perchlorate(TEAP) as supporting electrolyte at glassy carbon electrode. It was found that diffusion controlled reduction processes of four steps with one electron were 2Mo(Ⅴ)$\rightleftarrow^{e-}$ Mo(Ⅴ)Mo(Ⅳ) $\longrightarrow^{e-}$ 2Mo(Ⅳ), Mo(Ⅳ) $\longrightarrow^{e-}$ Mo(Ⅲ) $\longrightarrow^{e-}$ Mo(Ⅱ)

  • We conducted an isothermal slow cook-off(ISCO) test for an aluminized explosive containing AP. The sample bulged before the run-away reaction, and therefore we were unable to obtain the ISCO data. However, these phenomena did not occur for a certain AP grade, which means that the quality of the AP exerted a significant effect on the thermal stability of the explosive formulation. In this study, we investigated the thermal stability difference between a good and bad AP grade. First, we characterized the thermal properties of all APs by Differential Scanning Calorimeter(DSC) and correlated them to the ISCO phenomena. In addition to the DSC study and ISCO test, we also investigated and calculated the SADT and self-heating rate by the ARC of the different AP qualities to interpret the thermal stability of the explosive formulation. Moreover, we investigated the impurity of the AP and a preparation method to remove the included impurity and crystallization. Finally, we implemented qualification methods to identify the quality of AP by DSC using a high-pressure crucible.

  • This study aims to develop eco-friendly propellant that reduce the generation of harmful gases such as HCl gas and increase the emmision of nitrogen gas emissions. For this purpose, GUDN(N-Guanylurea dinitramide) and BTATz(3,6-bis(1H-1,2,3,4-tetrazol-5-ylamino)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine), which are low carbon high nitrogen materials, were used instead of AP(Ammonium Perchlorate) and Al(Aluminium), which are gernerally used in solid propellant. The prepared propellants were analyzed for mechanical properties and combustion characteristics, performance and AGARD smoke classification. Compared with AP/Al propellant, GUDN/BTATz propellant tended to decrease mechanical and combustion rate. Also, as a result of the static test after the production of the 4-inch motor, the performance of combustion of the GUDN/BTATz propellant decreased, but it was confirmed that the secondary smoke was improved by reducing harmful gases such as HCl gas.

  • The perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate ion-selective PVC membrance electrode for measuring hazardous anion in waste water were developed by incorporating the quaternary ammonium salts as active material. Ion-selective characteristics in waste water were studied by the useful pH range, the selective coefficients to various interfering anions, and the stability of electrode potential. DBP was best as a plasticizer. The effect of the membrane thickness on the electrode characteristics was improved with decreasing the membrane thickness, but below the optimum membrane thickness the electrode exhibited an inverse trend. The electrode potential of perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate electrode with TDDA, as active material, was stable within the pH range 4-11, 3-12, and 4-10 repectively. And the long-term potential stability of these electrodes were 3.0, 3.5, and 3.5 months respectively. The order of the selectivity coefficients was as shown below ; $ClO_4{^-}$ > $SCN^-$ > $I^-$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Br^-$ > $CN^-$ > $F^-$ > $Cl^-$ > $Ac^-$ > $H_2PO_4{^-}$, $SO_4{^-}$.

  • Thin films of buckminsterfullerene($C_{60}$) formed by solution drop casting on Pt foil electrode surfaces were studied by cyclic voltammetry(CV) in acetonitrile(MeCN) containing quaternary ammonium or alkali-metal salts as supporting electrolyte. The electrochemical behaviors of $C_{60}$ films are found to be strongly dependent on the nature of the supporting electrolytes, especially with tetrabutyl ammonium perchlorate (TBAP, $NBu_4ClO_4$), and tetrabutyl ammonium tetrafluoroborate ($TBABF_4$, $NBu_4BF_4$). Reasonably stable films are formed into which electrons can be injected. The interaction of $C_{60}$ film with the quaternary ammonium cation may produce the fulleride salts $(TBA^+)(C{_{60}}^-)$ and $(TBA^+)_2(C{_{60}}^{2-})$. The bulk electroreduction with a controlled potential to generate the soluble $C{_{60}}^{3-}$ anions(dark red-brown color) is followed by electrooxidative deposition to produce a neutral $C_{60}$ film on the surface. The peak currents($I_{pc}$ and $I_{pa}$) of these thin film were dramatically decreased with repetitive potential scanning. These results could be explained by the adsorption-desorption phenomena and ion pairing interaction of reduced species($C{_{60}}^-$, and $C{_{60}}^{2-}$) onto the electrode surface. The peak current changes and peak potential shifts of the thin $C_{60}$ film in cyclic voltammograms formed from solution were observed by varying scan rates.

  • Eight representative explosives (ammonium perchlorate (AP), ammonium nitrate (AN), trinitrotoluene (TNT), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), cyclonite (RDX), cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX), pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), and hexanitrostilbene (HNS)) were comprehensively analyzed with an ion trap mass spectrometer in negative ion mode using direct infusion electrospray ionization. MS/MS experiments were performed to generate fragment ions from the major parent ion of each explosive. Explosives in salt forms such as AP or AN provided cluster parent ions with their own anions. Explosives with an aromatic ring were observed as either $[M-H]^-$ for TNT and DNT or $[M]^{{\cdot}-}$ for HNS, while explosives without an aromatic ring such as RDX, HMX, and PETN were detected as an adduct ion with a formate anion, i.e., $[M+HCOO]^-$. These findings provide a guideline for the rapid and accurate detection of explosives once portable MS instruments become more readily available.

  • The polarographic behavior of 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) in acetonitrile as an aprotic solvent has been investigated. The reduction of PAN in $10^{-2}$ molarity of tetraethyl-ammonium perchlorate acetonitrile solution proceeds along two one-electron steps to give the corresponding hydrazo compound. Every reduction wave was diffusion controlled and considerably reversible. The reduction mechanism of PAN in acetonitrile is estimated as follows;

  • The AP/HTPB composite propellant is a common choice for solid rocket propulsion. The externally heated rocket via fires, for instance, can cause the energetic substance to ignite, and this may lead to a thermal runaway event marked by a severe explosion. In order to develop preventive measures to reduce the possibility of such accidents in propulsion systems, we investigate the ignition and initiation properties of AP/HTPB propellant.
