Lactic acid, the most widely occurring hydroxy-carboxylic acid, has traditionally been used as food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Even though it has tremendous potential for large scale production and use in a wide variety of applications, high cost lactic acid materials are primarily problems. Lactic acid can be obtained on either by fermentation or chemical synthesis. In recent years, the fermentation approach has become more successful because of the increasing market demand for naturally produced lactic acid. Generally, lactic acid was produced from pure starch or from glucose. As an alternative, biomass which is the most abundant renewable resources on earth have been considered for conversion to readily utilizable hydrolysate. In this study, we conducted the fermentation method to produce L(+)-lactic acid production from pretreated hydrolysate was investigated by Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 10863. The hydrolysate was obtained from pretreatment process of biomass using Ammonia percolation process (AP) followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. In order to effectively enhance lactic acid conversion and product yield, controlled medium, temperature, glucose concentration was conducted under pure glucose conditions. The optimum conditions of lactic acid production was investigated and compared with those of hydrolysate.

Nitrate nitrogen is common contaminant in groundwater aquifers, its concentration is regulated many countries below 10 mg/L as N (As per WHO standards) in drinking water. An attempt was made to get optimal results for the treatment of nitrate nitrogen in groundwater by conducting various experiments by changing the experimental conditions for ZVI bipolar packed bed electrolytic cell. From the experimental results it is evident that the nitrate nitrogen removal is more effective when the reactor conditions are maintained in acidic range but when the acidic environment changes to alkaline due to the hydroxide formed during the process of ammonia nitrogen there by increasing the pH reducing the hydrogen ions required for reduction which leads to low effectiveness of the system. In the ZVI bipolar packed bed electrolytic cell, the packing ratio of 0.5~1:1 was found to be most effective for the treatment of nitrate nitrogen because ZVI particles are isolated and individual particle act like small electrode with low packing ratio. It is seen that formation of precipitate and acceleration of clogging incrementally for packing ratio more than 2:1, decreasing the nitrate nitrogen removal rate. When the voltage is increased it is seen that kinetics and current also increases but at the same time more electric power is consumed. In this experiment, the optimum voltage was determined to be 50V. At that time, nitrate nitrogen was removed by 94.9%.
The aim of this study was 1) to confirm the practical efficiency of a routine milk P4 monitoring system for postpartum reproductive management of a dairy herd, and 2) to evaluate the relationship between the blood metabolic profiles, milk quality and body weight of individual cows in the farm records, which may reflect the postpartum nutritional condition, and the time of postpartum resumption of ovarian activity of dairy cows. A total of 116 Holstein cows was used in the present study. First, during the period of Experiment 1, postpartum reproductive management based on weekly measured milk P4 concentration from individual cows was conducted. Compared with the reproductive records of the past two years without P4 monitoring, although the day from calving to first AI did not change, both the number of AI until pregnant (with P4; 1.9 times vs. without P4; 2.9 times) and the days open (with P4; 95.1 days vs. without P4; 135.8 days and 133.8 days) were significantly decreased. In Experiment 2, the measurement of blood constituents such as albumin, blood urea nitrogen, packed cell volume, ammonia, glucose, total cholesterol, non-esterified, AST and $\gamma$-GTP was performed on the blood samples taken once approximately 14 days postpartum, to monitor both health and nutritional conditions. The milk constituent parameters, such as milk protein (MP), milk fat (MF), SNF and lactose, collected from the monthly progeny test of individual cows, were used to monitor the postpartum nutritional status. Furthermore, the data obtained from the routine measurements of body weight were used to calculate the rate of peripartum body weight loss. The resumption day of the postpartum estrous cycle was assumed from the milk P4 profiles of individual cows. There was no clear relationship between each parameter from blood examination and those from resumption time. However, the cows had low values of MP, and SNF, which significantly affected the resumption of the postpartum estrous cycle. Similarly, a higher rate of body weight loss indicated a significant delay (more than 1 month) in the resumption of the postpartum estrous cycle, compared with the groups that had a medium or lower rate of body weight loss. The results of the present study demonstrated that the implementation of routine milk P4 monitoring-based postpartum reproductive management, together with milk quality parameters and routine BW data available in field conditions may be utilized as a practical approach for increasing the postpartum reproductive efficiency of a high yielding dairy herd.

This study investigates the effect of denitrified biofloc water on changes in the water quality parameters and the physiological characteristics of shrimps. Biofloc rearing water contains a large number of microorganisms and can rapidly stabilize the water quality and energy saving if reusable due to high water temperatures. Rearing water contain floating bacteria with both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Therefore, when the carbon source is added in limited air supply, the anaerobic state is activated and the denitrification process is possible. In this study, the denitrification water had the following properties: ammonia (6.9 mg L-1), nitrite (0.3 mg L-1), nitrate concentration (9.2 mg L-1), high pH (8.42) and alkalinity (590 mg L-1). The experimental group consisted of seawater (SW, control), a mixture of Seawater and denitrified biofloc water (DNW) in the ratio of 3:1, 1:1 and DNW only. All experiments were done in triplicate. As a result, the survival rate never changed even when 100% of the denitrification water was utilized. However, a body fluid analysis showed that creatine and BUN were increased due to index of stress and the tissue damage resulting from the high denitrified water content. Body fluid ions (Na+, K+, and Cl-) significantly decreased as the denitrified water content increased. It was recommended that the denitrification water be mixed with a certain ratio (less than 50%) in the future as it may affect the osmotic pressure control in shrimps.

In order to estimate the uranium flux from seawater to sediments, we took pore water samples and deployed benthic chambers on seafloor of Chonsu Bay, Korea. The uranium flux across the sediment-water interface was estimated from the pore water to be 0.112-0.566 mg/$m^2yr$, corresponding to a removal flux of $4.3-21.5{\times}10^7$ gU/yr for the entire Yellow Sea. Nutrient fluxes from sediment to bottom water were estimated to be 135.6 mmol/$m^2yr$ for ammonia, 228.2 mmol/$m^2yr$ for nitrate, 36.8 mmol/$m^2yr$ for phosphate and 23.9 mmol/$m^2yr$ for silicate. The redox boundary, based on the distribution of pore water nitrate and solid phase manganese, was located at 3-5 cm below the sediment surface. Phosphate flux obtained by benthic chambers was 28.S mmol/$m^2yr$. On the other hand, estimates of uranium and silicate fluxes were orders of magnitude greater than those based on pore water profiles. Flux estimates on the basis of pore water concentration is believed to have greater reliability than those obtained from benthic chamber data.
Formamide is a colorless fluid with ammonia odor, and irritable when inhaled. It has $LD_{50}$ value of > 5,577 mg/kg in rats for acute oral toxicity and NOAEL of 113 mg/kg/day for target organ (liver) of whole body toxicity. It is also known as reproductive toxicant (1B) and TWA(Time Weighted Average) for it is 10 ppm. Workplace measurements of work places dealing with formamide showed the ppm of all 25 samples was very lower than WEL. However, the exposure concentration can change, depending on workplace condition such as the intensity of work, operating local ventilation system, and wearing protection equipment (Respirators). Therefore, considering it with the risk of whole body toxicity and reproductive toxicity, exposure quantity of each imaginary scenario was calculated at 5.16, 1.72, and $0.43mg/m^3$. The average value was calculated at 0.02-0.58, 0.02-0.66 at 90 percent of cumulative distribution, 0.02-0.69 at 95 percent of cumulative distribution. Therefore, it was generally evaluated to be safe because all values were below 1. However, caution is required to prevent health hazard because it has hepatotoxicity and reproductive toxicity and risk of a high level momentary exposure, depending on the condition of workplace.
Feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of dietary soybean meal (SBM) on the phosphorus bioavailability of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Seven diets, containing 0~70% SBM, were made based on iso-nitrogenous and iso-caloric basis of 44% crude protein. Ajpparent digestibility of phosphorus was measured 60 and 120 days after feeding. The digestibility coefficient increased gradually as the level of SBM increased up to 46~58%, but decreased at 58~70% SBM level. Phosphorus concentrations in feces decreased with an increased in dietary SBM level. Patterns of post-prandial phosphorus excretion were not similar to those of ammonia excretion, but the amount decreased with the increased SBM level in the diets. Total excretion of phosphorus for 24 hours was 19.68mg.kg-1 body wt..day-1 in the control group, but excreted phosphorus by the 58% and 70% SBM groups was 63.4% and 56.1% of the control group, respectively. Phosphorus concentration of whole body decreased with an increase in dietary SBM level for 120 days of feeding. However, there were no significant differences in phosphorus concentrations of liver among the experimental groups, except for 70% SBM diet group.
Saponins have been considered as promising natural substances for mitigating methane emissions from ruminants. However, studies reported that addition of saponin-rich sources often arrived at contrasting results, i.e. either it decreased methane or it did not. The aim of the present study was to assess ruminal methane emissions through a meta-analytical approach of integrating related studies from published papers which described various levels of different saponin-rich sources being added to ruminant feed. A database was constructed from published literature reporting the addition of saponin-rich sources at various levels and then monitoring ruminal methane emissions in vitro. Accordingly, levels of saponin-rich source additions as well as different saponin sources were specified in the database. Apart from methane, other related rumen fermentation parameters were also included in the database, i.e. organic matter digestibility, gas production, pH, ammonia concentration, short-chain fatty acid profiles and protozoal count. A total of 23 studies comprised of 89 data points met the inclusion criteria. The data obtained were subsequently subjected to a statistical meta-analysis based on mixed model methodology. Accordingly, different studies were treated as random effects whereas levels of saponin-rich source additions or different saponin sources were considered as fixed effects. Model statistics used were p-value and root mean square error. Results showed that an addition of increasing levels of a saponin-rich source decreased methane emission per unit of substrate incubated as well as per unit of total gas produced (p<0.05). There was a decrease in acetate proportion (linear pattern; p<0.001) and an increase in propionate proportion (linear pattern; p<0.001) with increasing levels of saponin. Log protozoal count decreased (p<0.05) at higher saponin levels. Comparing between different saponin-rich sources, all saponin sources, i.e. quillaja, tea and yucca saponins produced less methane per unit of total gas than that of control (p<0.05). Although numerically the order of effectiveness of saponin-rich sources in mitigating methane was yucca>tea>quillaja, statistically they did not differ each other. It can be concluded that methane mitigating properties of saponins in the rumen are level- and source-dependent.
The study evaluated replacement of Egyptian berseem clover (BC, Trifolium alexandrinum) with spent rice straw (SRS) of Pleurotus ostreatus basidiomycete in diets of lactating Baladi goats. Nine lactating homo-parity Baladi goats (average BW $23.8{\pm}0.4$ kg) at 7 d postpartum were used in a triplicate $3{\times}3$ Latin square design with 30 d experimental periods. Goats were fed a basal diet containing 0 (Control), 0.25 (SRS25) and 0.45 (SRS45) (w/w, DM basis) of SRS. The Control diet was berseem clover and concentrate mixture (1:1 DM basis). The SRS45 had lowered total feed intake and forages intake compared to Control. The SRS25 and SRS45 rations had the highest digestibilities of DM (p = 0.0241) and hemicellulose (p = 0.0021) compared to Control which had higher (p<0.01) digestibilities of OM (p = 0.0002) and CP (p = 0.0005) than SRS25 and SRS45. Ruminal pH and microbial protein synthesis were higher (p<0.0001) for SRS25 and SRS45 than Control, which also had the highest (p<0.0001) concentration of TVFA, total proteins, non-protein N, and ammonia-N. All values of serum constituents were within normal ranges. The Control ration had higher serum globulin (p = 0.0148), creatinine (p = 0.0150), glucose (p = 0.0002) and cholesterol (p = 0.0016). Both Control and SRS25 groups had the highest (p<0.05) milk (p = 0.0330) and energy corrected milk (p = 0.0290) yields. Fat content was higher (p = 0.0373) with SRS45 and SRS25 groups compared with Control. Replacement of BC with SRS in goat rations increased milk levels of conjugated linoleic acid and unsaturated fatty acids compared with Control. It was concluded that replacing 50% of Egyptian berseem clover with SRS in goat rations improved their productive performance without marked effects on metabolic indicators health.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with calcium salts of soybean oil fatty acids (CaSO) and linseed oil fatty acids (CaLO) on c9,t11-CLA production in ruminal fluid and milk fat from Holstein dairy cows. Rumen fermentation, lactational performances and fatty acid profiles in ruminal fluid and milk fat were also investigated. Twenty multiparous Holstein dairy cows were allotted randomly into two groups consisting of ten cows in each group according to calving date and average milk yield. The first group of cows was fed a control (without calcium salts) diet and a treatment as 1.0% of CaSO (on DM basis) for 30 days in each period. In the second group, cows were fed the same control diet and 1.0% of CaLO as a treatment in the same manner. The forage: concentrate ratio was 52:48, and diets were formulated to contain 17% crude protein (DM basis) for both groups. Ruminal pH, protozoal numbers and the concentration of total volatile fatty acids were unchanged, however, the ruminal ammonia-N decreased by feeding CaSO or CaLO treatment compared to the control diet. The vaccenic acid (trans-11 C18:1; VA) in rumen fluid increased (p<0.01) by 169% and 153%, and the c9,t11-CLA content of rumen fluid increased (p<0.01) by 214% and 210% in the CaSO and CaLO treatments, respectively, compared to the control diet. In milk fatty acids, the VA content increased by 130% and 132% in the evening and morning milking times, respectively, and the c9,t11-CLA content increased by 125% in both milking times for the CaSO supplementation than that of control diet. In the case of CaLO supplementation, the VA increased by 117% and 114%, and the c9,t11-CLA increased by 96% and 94% in the evening and morning milking times, respectively, compared to the control diet. The contents of VA and c9,t11-CLA of milk fatty acids were numerically higher in the evening milking time compared to the morning milking time for control and both treatments. Finally, these results indicated that the supplementation of CaSO or CaLO treatment increased the VA and the c9,t11-CLA in both ruminal fluid and milk fat of Holstein dairy cows.
