대통합 언어이론을 향하여 (Toward an Integrated Theory of Language)

  • This article does not deal with a theory or theories in the usual sense of the term but rather harks back to its etymological source, theorein ' to look at.' The phrase 'theory of language' thus purports a 'view of language' and does not carry the force of scientific explication of language. In fact, the word ' scientific' or 'science' per se originates from scire 'to know' and is here to be considered not so much in regard to some kind of positivistic methodology as a form of knowledge. If this exposition sounds unduly ingenious, that is because one is caught up in all kinds of presuppositions about the words under consideration. Sometimes, when we come to grips with an issue that strikes our mind as truly important, our language, by the light of which we hope to proceed safely, plays the will-o'-the-wisp instead and leaves us in the middle of a murky maze, twisting what was at first blush a mere cinch into a Gordian knot. On such occasions, etymology comes along the way and sends us back to itself as its own principle: Resort to etymos logos 'original, true word'! The main thrust of the present study is that alongside the quantitative, positivistic thought there is another equally valuable mode of qualitative and humanistic thinking that makes a whole gamut of new and concrete investigations possible, that an integrated theory of language is Possible by way of a happy amalgamation of diversified, humanistic views of language. With this idea as the leitmotif we explore two models of theory which typically set themselves up for a 'scientific' approach to language: analytic philosophy that delves into what it calls logical simples, and contemporary linguistics that stubbornly teeters around some formal rigor or other. It is argued that they are both characterized by a looking away from the fluid, ill-definable aspects of language, giving a preference to segments and isolated facts as a means to avoid those larger wholes and totalities which if they had to be seen would in the long run lead to an uncomfortable state of mind. Language, in the final analysis, is a Protean entity: so capricious and multifarious, and yet so noetic and prophetic, that we should catch sight of its picturesque images in their entirety to give form to an integrated theory of language.

Past and Present Viable Pavilions Remain in Architecture: Envisioning New Directions for a Better Future Research on pavilions within the history of world fairs, from the mid-19th to the 21st Century

  • The ephemeral and temporal nature of pavilions is the underlying motivation that led to the development of this paper. From the beginning of the industrial era through contemporary history, there have been many instances of architects attempting to rethink architectural design in the context of modern social, cultural, and technical imperatives. Today, the leading changes in humanity are accompanied by a revolutionary electronic digital medium. The pavilion has been in an amalgamation of architectural integration since the beginning of human history. World's Fairs/Expos have, since their establishment, served as international presentations of goods and achievements of particular nations. They became a popular stage wherein potential architectural achievements were showcased through the evocative architecture of pavilions. Due to the pavilion's "temporary nature," its coverage includes various perspectives: social, historical, geographical, post-colonial, iconographical, temporal, and ephemeral. It has also served as a receptacle due to its representational value at a given time. The pavilion has offered architectural designers, clients, and visitors a place to use their imaginations. Moreover, the architect's role in creating pavilions cannot be overestimated. Due to fact that they abound in symbolism, contemporary designs, and innovative solutions, pavilions often mirror modern mankind and plan for the next aesthetic revolutions and ideological architectural theories. To understand and appreciate architects' original intentions with their pavilions, this paper focuses on noteworthy pavilions that were created from the beginning of industrialization through the present. It explores and discusses the pavilion's characteristics, highlights the significance of its physical form as generated by a specific theme.

Fe-Nanoparticle Amalgamation Using Lagenaria siceraria Leaf Aqueous Extract with Focus on Dye Removal and Antibacterial Efficacy

  • Iron nanoparticles (Fe-NPs) were synthesized employing Lagenaria siceraria (LS) leaf aqueous extract as a reducing and capping medium to remove methylene blue (MB) dye and have antibacterial properties against G-negative (Escherichia coli) and G-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). The formation of LS-Fe-NPs (Lagenaria-siceraria-iron-nanoparticles) was confirmed by a change in color from pale yellow to dark brown. Characterization techniques, such as particle size analysis (PSA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were employed to prove nano spherical particles of size range between 80-100 nm. Phytochemicals and the presence of iron in LS-Fe-NPs nanoparticles were proved by UV-visible spectrophotometry. Further, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis results confirmed the existence of bioactive molecules in the plants. The magnetic property was analyzed using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), which displayed that the synthesized nanoparticles were superparamagnetic and exhibiting a saturation magnetization of 12.5 emu/g. Synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were used in methylene blue (MB) dye removal through adsorption. About 83% of 100 mg/L MB dye was removed within 120 min at pH 6 with a maximum adsorption capacity of 246.8 mg/g. Antibacterial efficacy of LS-Fe-NPs was screened against G-negative (Escherichia coli) and G-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus), respectively, and found that LS-Fe-NPs were effective against Staphylococcus aureus.

Predicting the CPT-based pile set-up parameters using HHO-RF and PSO-RF hybrid models

  • Determining the properties of pile from cone penetration test (CPT) is costly, and need several in-situ tests. At the present study, two novel hybrid learning models, namely PSO-RF and HHO-RF, which are an amalgamation of random forest (RF) with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Harris hawks optimization (HHO) were developed and applied to predict the pile set-up parameter "A" from CPT for the design aim of the projects. To forecast the "A," CPT data along were collected from different sites in Louisiana, where the selected variables as input were plasticity index (PI), undrained shear strength (Su), and over consolidation ratio (OCR). Results show that both PSO-RF and HHO-RF models have acceptable performance in predicting the set-up parameter "A," with R2 larger than 0.9094, representing the admissible correlation between observed and predicted values. HHO-RF has better proficiency than the PSO-RF model, with R2 and RMSE equal to 0.9328 and 0.0292 for the training phase and 0.9729 and 0.024 for testing data, respectively. Moreover, PI and OBJ indices are considered, in which the HHO-RF model has lower results which leads to outperforming this hybrid algorithm with respect to PSO-RF for predicting the pile set-up parameter "A," consequently being specified as the proposed model. Therefore, the results demonstrate the ability of the HHO algorithm in determining the optimal value of RF hyperparameters than PSO.

Dualism in Carlyle's Sartor Resartus: Descendentalism and Transcendentalism

  • Pointing out the reality of criticism done mostly on Carlyle s original structure and rhetoric in his Sartor Resartus, this research paper focuses on Carlyle s dualistic philosophy revealed in the work, limiting its focus mostly to the dualistic theme of descendentalism and transcendentalism. The essence of Caryle s descendentalism is his irony and satire on human civilization, not for criticism itself, like other satirists, but rather out of his deep, secret humanism behind his mask. Roughly the two objects of his social criticism in the contemporary, descendentalisitc world, are mechanism and materialism in a variety of new ideologies. To diagnose the Zeitgeist and disillusion man living in contemporary civilization, Carlyle in this work uses a very original metaphor, the clothes-symbol. According to Carlyle, human history and progress can be said to be originated from man s adventitious invention of clothes that was not for biological need or social decency, but for decoration, the instinct of which implies man s innate vanity and desire. Interestingly enough here, however, Carlyle uses the same metaphor of clothes for his vision of transcendence, the world of Everlasting Yea. Man is also God s apparel and Matter is that of Spirit. Carlyle s Everlasting Yea world stresses especially the two attitudes, belief in God and love of man, which have been recently jeopardized in the socalled descendentalistic world. But Carlyle s transcendental and religious vision in Sartor Resartus is, as critics also have agreed, a unique and mysterious vision as something different from orthodox Christianity or other Victorian ideologies, as more like an amalgamation among Calvinism, Romanticism, Platonism and German Idealism. All in all, reading Sartor Resartus is still a valuable experience of an idiosyncratically original vision along with his warning against dehumanizing forces lurking in the name of civilization and with his ultimate eulogy on man, proving descendentalism as just part of transcendentalism, although the reader from time to time can be embarrassed by his male-centered, politically conservative, and individual-oriented dynamism.

개선된 Deep Feature Reconstruction : 다중 스케일 특징의 보존을 통한 텍스쳐 결함 감지 및 분할 (Enhanced Deep Feature Reconstruction : Texture Defect Detection and Segmentation through Preservation of Multi-scale Features)

  • 산업 제조 분야에서 품질 관리는 불량률을 최소화하는 핵심 요소로, 미흡한 관리는 추가적인 비용 발생과 생산 지연을 야기할 수 있다. 본 연구는 제조품의 텍스쳐 결함 감지의 중요성을 중심으로, 보다 정밀한 결함 감지 방법을 제시한다. DFR(Deep Feature Reconstruction) 모델은 특징맵의 조합 및 재구성을 통한 접근법을 채택하였지만, 그 방식에는 한계가 있었다. 이에 따라, 우리는 제한점을 극복하기 위해 통계적 방법론을 활용한 새로운 손실 함수와 스킵 연결구조를 통합하고 파라미터 튜닝을 진행하였다. 이 개선된 모델을 MVTec-AD 데이터세트의 텍스쳐 카테고리에 적용한 결과, 기존 방식보다 2.3% 높은 결함 분할 AUC를 기록하였고, 전체적인 결함 감지 성능도 향상되었다. 이 결과는 제안하는 방법이 특징맵 조합의 재건축을 통한 결함 탐지에 있어서 중요한 기여함을 입증한다.

태백산분지에 분포하는 후기 고생대 평안누층군의 변성-변형작용: 페름-삼첩기 송림 조산운동의 고찰 (Metamorphism and Deformation of the Late Paleozoic Pyeongan Supergroup in the Taebaeksan Basin: Reviews on the Permo-Triassic Songrim Orogeny)

  • 한반도의 페름-삼첩기 송림 조산운동은 유라시아 동쪽 경계부에서 복잡한 충돌현상을 포함한 주요 지구조운동이다. 이번 연구는 기존의 송림 조산운동의 변성/변형작용의 특징을 토대로 태백산분지에서 송림조산운동의 특징과 시기에 대해서 알아보고, 또한 최대 압축운동(bulk crustal shortening) 방향, 변성 온도-압력 그리고 온도-시간 경로를 비교 분석하여 옥천 변성대와 임진강 변성대에서의 송림 조산운동의 변성/변형작용을 대비하고자 한다. 태백산분지 북동부 지역에 분포하는 평안누층군은 퇴적된 이후 초기에 저온/중압형 광역변성작용과 후기에 중생대 화강암 관입과 연관된 접촉변성작용으로 특징 지워진다. 중압형 광역변성작용은 2개의 시계방향 온도-압력-변형 경로 고리(loop)를 보이며, 4회의 변형작용($D_1-D_4$)을 수반한다. 첫 번째 고리는 약 $400-500^{\circ}C$, 1.5-3.0 kbar에서 $D_1$$D_2$ 변형작용과 관련되며 syn-$D_1$ 경녹니석, syn-$D_1$ 홍주석, post-$D_1$ 마가라이트, Ca이 풍부한 syn-$D_2$ 또는 post-$D_2$ 사장석의 형성에 영향을 주었다. 그리고 두 번째 고리는 약 $520-580^{\circ}C$, 2.0-6.0 kbar에서 $D_3$$D_4$ 변형작용과 관련되며, syn-$D_3$ 석류석과 십자석의 형성과 syn-$D_4$ 또는 post-$D_4$ 홍주석의 재성장으로 정의된다. syn-$D_1$ 경녹니석과 홍주석은 E-W 방향의 최대 압축운동 동안에 성장하였으며, 반면에 syn-$D_3$ 석류석과 십자석 그리고 syn-$D_4$ 또는 post-$D_4$ 홍주석 반상변정은 N-S 최대 압축운동 동안에 형성되었다. 기존의 옥천분지와 임진강 변성대에서의 변성작용과 최대 압축운동 방향에 대한 연구결과를 비교해 보면, 최고 변성 온도-압력 조건은 한반도 동쪽(태백산분지)에서 서쪽(임진강 변성대와 경기육괴 남서부 지역)으로 감에 따라 증가하는 경향을 보인다. 또한 E-W 방향의 최대 압축 운동은 송림 조산운동 초기 동안에 옥천 변성대의 동부 지역에 영향을 주었고, N-S 방향의 최대 압축 운동은 송림 조산운동 후기 동안에 임진강 변성대와 옥천변성대 지역에 영향을 준 변형작용의 결과로 판단된다. 결론적으로 페름기 후기에서부터 삼첩기 동안 한반도에 영향을 준 송림 조산운동은 북중국-남중국 지괴의 충돌작용 뿐만 아니라 유라시아 동쪽부에 분포했던 소규모 지괴들의 봉합(amalgamation) (예, 중한 지괴와 히다-오키 지괴의 충돌)에 대비될 수 있음을 시사한다.

한약재내 중금속 함량 및 잔류농약 분석 - 모 한방병원 한약재 중심으로 - (Determination of Heavy Metals and Residual Pepsticides in Oriental Medical Materials - Cultivated Oriental Medical Materials at Sangji University Oriental Medical Hospital -)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze harmful heavy metals and residual pepsticides in 30 kinds of oriental medical materials. This study was carried out on 32 samples with 30 kinds of Oriental medical materials. The GC-ECD(Varian, CP-3800) was used to analyze residual pepsticides. ICP-OES(Varian, Vista-MPX) was used to analyze lead, arsenic, cadmium. Mercury was analyzed by amalgamation method. Arsenic was detected less than 3(mg/kg) in 21 samples and was not detected 11 samples. Lead was detected less than 5(mg/kg) in 25 samples and was not detected 7 samples. Mercury was detected less than 0.2(mg/kg) in 12 samples and was not detected 20 samples. Cadmium was detected more than 0.3(mg/kg) in 3 samples was detected less than 0.3(mg/kg) in 17 samples and was not detected 12 samples. A few residual pepsticides was detected, but all residual pepsticides was safe.

석탄회와 석회석으로 제조된 인공경량골재의 소성특성 (Sintering Properties of Artifical Lightweight Aggregate Prepared from Coal Ash and Limestone)

  • 본 연구에서는 석탄회로 제조된 인공경량골재에 석회석을 첨가하였을 때 소성온도 및 시간에 따른 소성특성을 관찰하였다. 소성온도의 증가에 따라 quartz($SiO_2$)가 감소한 반면 mullite($3Al_2O_3{\cdot}2SiO_2$)가 증가되었으며, 석회석의 첨가에 의해 clinoptiolite와 pagioclase와 같은 소성에 의한 소성광물이 생성되었다. 석탄회 및 석회석으로 제조된 경량골재의 소성성은 주로 소성시간보다는 소성온도에 의해서 좌우되는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 소성온도 및 시간의 증가는 골재내 형성된 거대기공의 미세화 및 폐기공의 형성으로 전체 기공부피를 축소시키는 경향을 나타냈다. 1000$^{\circ}$C에서 5분가 소성시킨 경량골재의 표면은 용융 슬래그 층의 융착현상에 의해 개기공이 거의 없었으나 내부는 발포가스에 의해 수 ${\mu}$의 미세기공이 폐기공 형태로 균일하게 분포하였다. 이로부터 석회석이 첨가된 소성 경량골재의 적정 소성조건은 소성온도는 약 1000$^{\circ}$C, 소성시간은 5분이 바람직한 것으로 나타났다.

METHYLMERCURY EXPOSURE IN CURRENT JAPANESE: ESTIMATION FROM HAIR ANALYSIS

  • Methylmercury (MeHg) is an environmental pollutant with neurotoxic effects on the central nervous system. The major exposure route of MeHg to humans is via consumption of fish and shellfish which accumulate the chemical through the food web in an aquatic environment. Hair mercury level is an excellent marker for MeHg exposure. We have been conducting a survey on hair mercury contents among general populations from 14 districts to estimate the current Japanese MeHg exposure level. Total mercury levels of all hair samples collected (12923 in total) were analyzed by the oxygen combustion-gold amalgamation method using an atomic absorption mercury detector. Multiple regression analysis revealed that mercury levels were significantly correlated with several covariates, such as sex, age, the amount of daily intake of total fish/shellfish, a preference for certain fish such as tuna or bonito, and artificial waving. The geometric means for the population without artificial waving were 2.47 and 1.65 ${\mu}g/g$ for males (n = 5623) and females (n = 3470), respectively. Hair mercury levels varied with age, and the variations were more significant in males. Since the difference between sexes was not evident at younger ages, some hormonal control might also be involved in the mercury uptake by human hair. The average mercury levels in our hair samples varied among the sampling districts. Tuna is a major carnivorous fish with high mercury accumulations that is often consumed in Japan. The amount of fish consumption and the preference rate far tuna would appear to be responsible far the regional variation in hair mercury levels in Japan. Recently, a provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) of MeHg was revised by 61st JECFA to 1.6 ${\mu}g/kg/week$, which was about half that of the Japanese standard, and corresponded to a hair level of 2.2 ppm. The distribution of hair mercury levels in Japanese populations in the present study indicated that 25% of the Japanese females of child-bearing age were estimated to be exposed to MeHg over the PTWI level. This would reflect the high Japanese consumption of marine products. However, not only mercury contamination, but also the nutritional benefit may have to be considered when discussing the risk involved in the current level of fish and shellfish consumption in Japan.
