The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of chemical additives on total phosphorus (TP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), and total volatile fatty acids (total VFAs) in hanwoo slurry. The treatments in this study were ferrous sulfate, alum, and aluminum chloride, and applied at the rate of 0, 0.5, and 1.0 g/25 g of hanwoo slurry. All of the chemical treatments significantly lowered TP (11 to 53% of the untreated control), SRP (41 to 99.9% of the untreated control), and total VFAs (22 to 48.5% of the untreated control) by reducing hanwoo slurry pH (3.42 to 6.86). Among these chemical amendments, addition of 0.5 g ferrous sulfate, alum, and aluminum chloride to hanwoo slurry were the best results evaluated on farms with respect to reducing negative environmental impacts. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that the use of chemical amendments should be considered in the development of best management practices (BMPs) for the hanwoo industries.

Coagulation process using aluminum sulfate ($Al_2(SO_4)_3$) and ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$) was employed as a treatment method for decolorization of a synthetic textile wastewater containing red dye in this paper. Factors such as initial pH, coagulant dosage, initial concentration, conductivity and mixing conditions that influence color removal efficiency were experimentally tested. It was found that $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ is more efficient than $FeCl_3$ as coagulant. When $40mgL^{-1}$ aluminum sulfate was used, results showed that color induced by the red dye was efficiently removed (> 90 %) and was obtained in a large range of initial pH from 4 to 8 with, and for a dye concentration lower than $235mg\;L^{-1}$. After addition of the coagulant, the medium had to be mixed for 30 min at 60 rpm, then allowed to settle for 40 min. The effects of water conductivity in the range $0.035-2.42mS\;cm^{-1}$ and dye concentration up to $380mg\;L^{-1}$ were also followed and discussed.
The removal of algae was conducted by loess, aluminum sulfate and PAC on a laboratory scale. The loess was consists of organic matter 1.4%, T-N $289{\mu}g/g$, T-P $17{\mu}g/g$, $Al841.2{\mu} g/g$, Fe $592.7{\mu}g/g$, Ca $10.6{\mu}g/g$, Mg $85.5{\mu}g/g$ and Mn $6.6{\mu}g/g$. Test water was dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa. When test water was mixed with 0.01, 0.05. and 0.1 g/$\ell$ of the loess in 5 minutes, after settled in 1 hour, the removal of chl-a was 2, 22, and 36% respectively. The removal of chl-a was 69%, 70% in pH 4.5 and 9.0 and above 92% between pH 5.0 and 8.0 after the $2mg/{\ell}$ of aluminum sulfate was added. When the $2mg/{\ell}$ of PAC and $0.05g/{\ell}$ of loess were added to test water together, the removal of chl-a was 95-99% in pH 4.0-8.0, 60% in pH 9.0, and 18% in pH 10.0. The removal of chl-a was higher when loess, aluminum sulfate and PAC was used together than used alone.
High purity alumina has been extracted form low grade Korean alunite. Alunite ore was treated by 15% $NH_4OH$ solution, followed by 10% $H_2SO_4$ leaching and metallic impurities such as Fe and Ti were removed by solvent extraction method. Alumina prepared by the extraction process was 99.9% in purity. Hot Petroleum Drying Method has been employed for the preparation of uniformly fine alumina powder, using chemical reagent aluminum sulfate and ammonium aluminum sulfate extrated from Korea alunite. The sinterability of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method was shown to be improved in comparison with the one treated by other methods such as ball milling method, but dry pressing was difficult due to the agglomeration of calcined powder. The best slip of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method contained a lower soild content than the one treated by other methods. The alumina body formed by soild and drain casting with the former alumina powder showed a higher sintered density.
A procedure for the preparation of peptizable pseudoboehmite has been described in detail based upon a process of neutralization of an aqueous aluminum sulfate or chloride solution with aqueous ammonia. In order to obtain peptizable pseudoboehmite products, carefully controlled conditions were required in the whole processes of neutralization, aging, washing, and drying. The optimum conditions experimentally found are the following. The aluminum salt solution is neutralized with aqueous ammonia until the final pH of the solution reaches 10.0 to 10.8 or 9.0 to 9.3 for the sulfate of chloride, respectively. The alumina gel formed is subjected to aging at $80^{\circ}C for about 3 hours and washed with water more than 5 times to reduce the residual sulfate or chloride ion in the final products to less than 4%. The pseudoboehmite gel thus obtained should be dried oven at 80 to $100^{\circ}C for a few to several hours depending on the selected temperatures.
Cell recovery from high cell density broths of Alcaligenes eutrophus by pretreatment with aluminum-based coagulants such as aluminum sulfate, polyaluminum hydrooxide chloride silicate (PACS), and polyaluminum hydrooxide chloride (Hi-PAX) was carried out. Cells coagulated with coagulants could be successfully recovered above 95-99% by centrifugation or filtration. The optimum initial pH of fermentation broths for cell recovery was in the range of 10 to 12. Optimum coagulants dosage for cell recovery increased with increasing of cell concentrations (21-160 g/L). The optimum coagulant dosages to recover cells with more than 95% cell recovery by centrifugation for the cell concentrations ranged 21-160 g/L were as follows: aluminum sulfate, 416-1708 mg Al/L; PACS, 211-826 mg Al/L; Hi-PAX, 320-960 mg Al/L. At optimum conditions for the coagulation of cells, centrifugal forces for 95% of cell recovery were dependent on the cell concentration. The centrifugal forces at 82 g/L and 160 g/L of cell concentration were only 45${\times}$g and 1600${\times}$g, respectively.
Alkali silicate system has wide application to accelerating admixture for shotcrete, but it has several problems that decrease long-term strength and delay setting time. So alkali-free system was gradually focused on accelerating admixtures for shotcrete due to its environmental property. The aim of this study is to investigate effect of alkali-free accelerating admixtures on aluminum sulfate system containing diethanolamine or acrylic acid etc. The alkali-free accelerating admixture has better properties than silicate system accelerating admixtures on compressive strength and low pH as shotcrete. Especially, the compressive strength of alkali-free accelerating admixture containing diethanolamine was increased about 10% compared with the value of ordinary portland cement.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of applying alum (aluminum sulfate) and aluminum chloride on pH and pathogen populations of Hanwoo manure. A total of 36 steers (8 months old and averaging 300 kg in weight) were used in this trial and allotted to 9 pens (3 replication pens per group with 4 steers per experimental unit, $5{\times}8$ m). Chemical additives were applied as a top dressing with garden rake to a depth of 1 cm of manure with wood shavings in each treatment. The chemical amendments were control (without chemical amendments), 50 g of alum and 50 g of aluminum chloride/kg of Hanwoo manure. The experiment was carried out for 4 weeks. Adding alum and aluminum chloride to Hanwoo manure reduced (P < 0.05) pH compared to untreated controls during the 4-wk period. Both levels of the alum and aluminum chloride treatments tested decreased (P < 0.05) Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica populations in Hanwoo manure at 2 and 4 weeks. It appears that the reduction in pathogen populations was primarily associated with the lower manure pH. If more strict environmental regulations are put into effect regarding pathogen populations from Hanwoo facilities, treating Hanwoo manure with alum and aluminum chloride may be a good management practice.
황산암모늄에 의한 석탄회의 황산화반응 및 반응생성물로부터 황산에 의한 알루미늄이온의 마이크로파 추출에 관하여 검토하였다. 석탄회와 황산암모늄의 반응생성물인(NH$_4$)$_3$Al(SO$_4$)$_3$는 35$0^{\circ}C$ 이상에서 NH$_4$Al(SO$_4$)$_2$로 분해하였다.
