Alumina bushing used for manufacturing glass fiber was fabricated by gel-casting which can fabricate complex forms. When solid loading is increased, density was increased and shrinkage and absorption were decreased. The sample loading with 57 vol% solid was optimum for alumina suspension, which showed the best physical properties. The cast sample was sintered at $1550{^{\circ}C}$ for two hours with sintering additive, $Y_2O_3$. The result showed that the alumina bushing with $Y_2O_3$ sintering additive has a density of 98%, shrinkage of 11% and bending strength of 196 kg/$cm^2$.
In this study, aluminum sec-butoxide, aluminum iso-propoxide were mixed with alcohol such as, secbutanol, iso-propanol. And then Acetyl Acetone, water were added to make Acetyl bond and OH bond. After that, Polymeric alumina sol was synthesized from catalysis reaction with strong acid typically HCl. These alumina soil was dried at 8$0^{\circ}C$~9$0^{\circ}C$ to have a optmum viscosty for spinning, spinned at spinner, and then sintered to make polycrystalline alumina fiber.
As compared with conventional sintering, rapid heating in microwave system could enhance sinterability and final properties of alumina with a very short sintering time. In this study microwave sintering was performed using zirconia brick as a reaction chamber which was positioned in a 2.45 GHz(700 W) multimode microwave cavity. Microwave-sintered alumina showed high density and smaller grain size than conventionally sintered alumina because the ratio of densification rate/grain growth rate was increased by rapid heating.
The effects of the dispersion, drying, and binder burning-out on the green-microstructures of gelcasted alumina were studied. The slip consisting of 55 vol% alumina powder and 5 wt% organic materials was well-dispersed by adding 0.28 wt% polyelectrolyte polymer. Green bodies were dried at >85% relative humidity at room temperature. Green-microstructures were observed to be depended on the heating rate during binder burnout. Constant drying rate was not observed in drying process of gelcasted alumina. Sintered body showed its relative density higher than 99% when it was sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours.
The creep behavior and creep fracture of sintered alumina at high temperature were investigated under four point flexural test. Steady-state creep behavior was observed at low bending stress and primary creep until fracture was observed at hish bending stress. The loading history of bending stress did not affect on steady-state creep rate. Intergranular fracture was dominant for fracture of alumina at room and high temperature. However, transgranular fracture was dominant on creep of alumina under high temperature by nucleation and growth of microcracks due to residual flaws or cavities in the material.
Alumina extraction from raw Hadong kaolin with sulfuric acid was studied to obtain relatively pure alumina. Factors as acid concentration, heating temperature and conditions of ammonium alum crystal formation from extracted solution are also surveyed and most of iron oxide in kaolin is eliminated in crystallization of ammonium alum. Pure crystal obtained from the extracted solution with ammonium sulfate is relatively free from iron containment in mother liquor. Alumina in ammonium alum crystal is converted to gibbsite form after complete hydrolysis in ammonia gas.
In the previous paper, it was reported that formation of desirable calcium alunimate(CA) in clinker was considerably affected by sulfur-contaminated alumina which was prone to form a disadvantageous mineral, $C_4A_3S$. In this study, however, sulphate-free alumina cement was made from sulfur-free alumina refined from alunite and corresponding materials. The major minerals in the clinker were identified by X-ray diffraction patterns as calcium aluminate (CA), calcium dialuminate $(CA_2)$ and dicalcium alumino silicate $(C_2AS)$. The formation of CA was more effective with decreasing contents of silica to 2 per cent or less and sulfur in the refined alumina. Physical properties of prepared alumina cement such as setting time, stability and compressive strength were measured. The values were similar to those of commercial alumina cements.
High purity alumina has been extracted form low grade Korean alunite. Alunite ore was treated by 15% $NH_4OH$ solution, followed by 10% $H_2SO_4$ leaching and metallic impurities such as Fe and Ti were removed by solvent extraction method. Alumina prepared by the extraction process was 99.9% in purity. Hot Petroleum Drying Method has been employed for the preparation of uniformly fine alumina powder, using chemical reagent aluminum sulfate and ammonium aluminum sulfate extrated from Korea alunite. The sinterability of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method was shown to be improved in comparison with the one treated by other methods such as ball milling method, but dry pressing was difficult due to the agglomeration of calcined powder. The best slip of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method contained a lower soild content than the one treated by other methods. The alumina body formed by soild and drain casting with the former alumina powder showed a higher sintered density.
The surface of alumina is capable of acquiring a change when it is in an aqueous solution. This surface change will have a strong influence on the surrounding ions, particularly those of opposite change known as the counter ions. A site-binding model of the {{{{ gamma }}-alumina/KCl(aq) interface was used to calculated theoretical surface ionization constants and P.Z.C.(Point of zero change) of {{{{ gamma }}-alumina. This paper was carried out to investigate the effect of calcination temperature on the acidic and electrical properties of pure {{{{ gamma }}-alumina prepared by the precipitation method from the Al(NO3)3.9H2O and NH4OH. From the experimental data it was shown that {{{{ gamma }}-alumina have a mainly Br nsted acid site. However, the acidity of {{{{ gamma }}-alumina decreased with increasing calcination temperature at strength Ho +9.3. The surface charge density of {{{{ gamma }}-alumina was increased with electrolyte ionic strength and calcination temperature.
In wet powder processing of alumina, a number of organic molecules such as dispersant and binder are used to produce the flow behavior and properties requisite for shape forming. In this study, interparticle forces of alumina particles suspended in aqueous media were controlled by suspension pH, poly (methacrylic acid) (PMAA, used as dispersant) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA, used as binder). The combined adsorption isotherms of the dispersant and binder additives on alumina were determined by total organic carbon analyzer, while the adsorption of dispersant was differentiated from binder in the mixed additive system by ultraviolet spectroscopy. The electrokinetic behavior of alumina suspensions were then correlated with the adsorption characteristics of dispersant and binder onto alumina particles. It was found that the isoelectric ($pH_{iep}$) of alumina shifted from pH 8.9${\pm}$0.1 to acidic pH as PMAA concentration increased, while PVA adsorption did not affect the $pH_{iep}$ but caused a decrease in the near surface potential.
