  • The objective of this study was to identify pulmonary functional variations in relation to postural changes, lapse after changing position, and the use of abdominal band in the cervical cord injured. The subjects of this study were 19 quadriplegic patients who had been admitted to the department of the Rehabilitation Hospital, College of Medicine, Yousei University, from April, 1997 through May 3, 1997. A spiroanalyzer was used to measure pulmonary function in supine, standing, time after changing position, and recording to the position, application method, and tightness of the abdominal band. The data were analyzed by the repeated measure one-way ANOVA, and Wilcoxon signed rank test. The findings were as follows: 1. All phase of the patients' pulmonary function improved significantly in supine posture in contrast to standing (vital capacity by $0.46{\ell}$ and expiratory reserve volume by $0.09{\ell}$). 2. The longer the time lapsed from supine posture to standing, the patient's expiratory reserve volume, maximum ventilation volume, vital capacity, and forced expiratory volume increased. 3. When the patient lay in supine position, the maximum ventilation volume, vital capacity, and the forced vital capacity increased then the center line of the abdominal band was placed along iliac crest; on the other hand, when the patient was standing, placing the bottom line of the abdominal band along iliac crest increased the maximum ventilation volume, vital capacity, and forced expiratory volume. 4. In placing the abdominal band in the patients, leaving space between the top and bottom lines of the band helped increased in maximum ventilation volume, vital capacity, and forced vital capacity for patient in supine as well as in standing. 5. When placing the abdominal band to patients in supine posture, reducing the length of the band by 2.5% along the patient's waist line increased the patients' vital capacity, while reducing the length by 10% to patients in standing increased the maximum ventilation volume. The abdominal band should be placed in such a way that the bottom part of the band should be more tightly fastened while leaving enough room for a hand to be placed in between the body and the band for the top part of the hand. It should also be noted that in a supine position, the bottom line of the band should be placed along the iliac crest, while in standing, the center line should be placed along the iliac crest. The length of the band should also be reduced by 2.5% of the waist line in supine position, and in standing, the length should be reduced by 10%. It should also be noted that the pulmonary function of the patients should be measured at least 10 minutes after one position change.

  • The one-way gas valve developed in this study was designed to prevent the breakage of packages from increased internal pressure, which is a problem in packaged Kimchi, and simultaneously reduce the outflow of the offodor release. The effect of the one-way gas valve on the headspace atmospheric compositions was investigated in the packaging system. The changes of atmospheric compositions and quality factors of Kimchi, such as $CO_2$ accumulation, pH, titratable acidity, and salinity, were measured during a 4-week storage period at $4^{\circ}C$. The Kimchi package with the one-way gas valve dramatically reduced pressure build-up in the pouch by allowing the controlled flow of gas to the atmosphere. In addition, the package design allows the possibility of controlling the gas generated from Kimchi by adjusting the viscosity of the open pressure control oil. The one-way gas valve did not affect the sensory characteristics of Kimchi products during the storage period. Furthermore, the deodorizing capability of the activated carbon contained in the one-way gas valve effectively reduced the off-odor of Kimchi products released along with carbon dioxide. The novel one-way gas valve is considered to be an active packaging system that can solve major problems of expansion and off-odor leakage in the packaging of Kimchi.

  • Along with the development of computer graphics, real-time rendering, motion capture, and artificial intelligence technology, virtual being that enables two-way communication has emerged in the content industry. Although the commercialization of technologies and platforms is creating a two-way communication virtual being, there is a lack of analysis of what characteristics this virtual being has and how it can be used in each field. Therefore, through technical background survey and case study for the production of virtual being, the two-way communication virtual being is analyzed on the characteristics necessary for emotional exchange. The characteristics needed for emotional exchange were divided into interaction, individuality, and autonomy, and this characteristic is classified as the focus and how two-way communication virtual being will be used in the content field. This study is expected to provide significant implications for the research of content production and utilization using virtual being as a basic study of virtual being, which analyzes the technical background and characteristics for two-way communication required for virtual being production.

  • Contamination of heavy metals in water and sediments along Mangyeong Gang(river) has reached up to critical level The object of the study is to elucidate somed molluscs which inhabit along the river on respect to the modulatory role in reducing the pollution. For the purpose, molluscs which are common in numbers and biomass in the area were collected, and Cadmim(Cd) was subjected as a reference metal in the experiment. The corresponding species were; Cipango;aludina chinensis (muddy snail) and Scapharca subcrenata (seashell). As methods, sample species were kept in laboratory under the natural condition as possible. Soil were brought from the site of the collection, dried autoclaved and wetted with ordinary water. It wad utilized as media to maintain the collected species in vitro all the way of the experiment. CdCI$^{2}$ was mixe in the medium according to experimental design. On the result obtained in the study, it is summarized that molluscs which inhabit along Mangyeong Gang(river)consume heavy mital-containing matters, so far Cd is concerned in the study. The amout of Cd concentration in tissues of the benthic natured invertebrates were dose and time related, and MT-Cd was also similar trend. Thus, Cd may eventually combine with low molecular protein forming metalloprotein, then reduce the toxicity of the heavy metal.

  • Measurement of the location of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the clustering of galaxies has proven to be a robust and precise method to measure the expansion of the Universe. The best constraints so far have been provided from spectroscopic surveys because the errors on the redshift obtained from spectroscopy are minimal. This in turn means that the errors along the line-of-sight are reduced and so one can expect constraints on both angular diameter distance $D_A$ and expansion rate $H^{-1}$. But, future surveys will probe a larger part of the sky and go to deeper redshifts, which correspond to more number of galaxies. Analysing each galaxy using spectroscopy, which is a time consuming task, will not be practically possible. So, photometry will be the most convenient way to measure redshifts for future surveys such as LSST, Euclid, etc. The advantage of photometry is measuring the redshift of vast number of galaxies in a single exposure, but the disadvantage are the errors associated with the measured redshifts. Using a wedge approach, wherein the clustering is split into different wedges along the line-of-sight ${\pi}$ and across the line-of-sight ${\sigma}$, we show that the BAO information can be recovered even for photometric catalogues with errors along the line-of-sight. This means that we can get cosmological distance constraints even if we don't have spectroscopic information.

  • When the electric current flows horizontally along the coil, the force is found. However, when the coil intersects perpendicularly, the force is 0. Using a half coil structure, when electric current flows along the incomplete perpendicular half intersect we can explain this by way of integral calculus with the spinning motion. Upon completion of the perpendicular model, computer simulation for this model will be possible particularly for the application of the electric piston.

  • The use of various shearing apparatuses to study the phase behavior of poly(styrene-b-isoprene) diblock copolymer micelles is described. A DMTA rheometer was modified so that one can apply oscillatory shear and obtain the scattering pattern along the shear gradient direction. A cone and plate shear cell was designed to access scattering along the shear vorticity direction, and both oscillatory and steady shear can be applied. The most popular way to employ steady shear on relatively low viscosity fluids is to use a Couette cell, because a high shear rate can be readily achieved without disturbing the sample by overflow. In this work, oscillatory shear was used to obtain a single crystal-like scattering pattern, and thereby to examine the mechanism of the thermotropic transition between face-centered cubic (fcc) and body-centered cubic (bcc) lattices. By applying the steady shear, the response of the fcc lattices to various shear rates is discussed.

  • As a society advances and develops more rapidly, there is a corresponding increase in an aging population; and therefore, transportation and transportation needs develop in a complicated way. In these times, medical rehabilitation services are required and the demands for these services will increase as time passes. Moreover, the scope of disability as defined by the government has been expanded owing to the welfare policy for the disabled. Therefore, the number of disabled who require medical services is on the rise. Along with an increase in medical rehabilitation demands, the necessity for medical rehabilitation increases as well and its role becomes more diverse on a wider spectrum. However, architectural studies on rehabilitation facilities have been insufficient and there are many problems currently in facilities operations. This study aims to present a spatial organization system along with required space that would form the basis for the most effective spatial plan and facility operation for rehabilitation hospitals.

  • This study considered stools not just as a tool for sitting but with their symbolicity as well. Regarding the changes and meanings of general stools and X-stools, this paper studied their images and explanations as well as literatures by quoting as it limited their range from the ancient times till Neo-classicism. In conclusion, the origin of stools exists in consciousness and also the social hierarchy of authority. There still remain the elements of X in any way along with the functions. This proves that furniture has reason for existence even today not just for its functions but something beyond that. Along with the historic flow of X-stools, we should know that there is diversity of thinking in the area of stools. In understanding furniture design or furniture, now is the time to approach to it in various ways, and it is expected that new design can be born through that thinking.
