  • A low voltage wire should be used considering that a load used in the end is a low voltage. In regard to these wires, there are needs for research about the wire thickness calculation in accordance with IEC standard because the standardization process for IEC (KS standard) was completed on June 30, 2005, and they stopped producing NEC-standard products by the order from Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under Ministry of Knowledge Economy (former Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy) since July 1, 2006. This study compared, in terms of the thickness calculation of low voltage wire, a reduction factor application by IEC standard about allowed current and an application for calculation of voltage drop. It also proposed the formula for IEC standard to decrease errors and resolve the difficulty of standardized calculation by analyzing the difference between simplified formula and standardized formula that are the most frequently used calculation method of voltage drop.

  • A pulse width modulation-voltage source inverter (PWM-VSI) is used for variable speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. The PWM-VSI fed PMSM has two major disadvantages. Firstly, the PWM-VSI DC-link voltage limits the magnitude of the PMSM terminal voltage. As a result, the motor speed is restricted. Secondly, in a low speed range, the PWM-VSI modulation index declines. This is caused by a high DC-link voltage and a low terminal voltage ratio. As a result, the distortion of the voltage command and the stator current are increased. This paper proposes an optimal pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) control which can adjust the inverter DC-link voltage by using a buck-boost DC-DC converter. At a low speed range, the proposed system can reduce the distortion of the voltage command, which improves the stator current waveform. Also, the allowable speed range is extended. In order to verify the proposed method, experimental results are provided to confirm the simulation results.

  • H-beams are generally produced by hot rolling composed of a Break Down Mill (BDM) and a Finishing Mill (FM). The goal of the current study was to develop BDM rolling of H300x300 beams from blooms slit from slabs. In order to manufacture H300x300 beams, the caliber design and the pass schedule of BDM rolling were proposed for a bloom instead of a beam blank. The proposed BDM caliber design and pass schedule were tested using FE-simulation and pilot tests. For the major shape dimensions, such as flange width, web height, web thickness, as well as BDM rolling loads, a comparative analysis between the FE-simulation and the pilot rolling tests was conducted. The results of FEM analysis and pilot rolling tests showed good consistency. Moreover, BDM rolling loads were predicted to be in the range of allowable rolling loads. It was concluded that the designed BDM rolling is suitable for implementation within current manufacturing capacity.

  • In this study, the design of anchorage zone for unbonded post-tensioned concrete beam with single tendons of ultimate strength 2400MPa was evaluated to verify that the KDS 14 20 60(2016) and KHBDC 2010 codes are applicable. The experimental results showed that the bursting force equation of current design codes underestimated bursting stress measured by test, because the KDS 14 20 60(2016) and KHBDC 2010 propose the location of the maximum bursting force 0.5h which is the half of the height of member regardless of stress contribution. Although the allowable bearing force calculated by current design codes was not satisfied the prestressing force, the cracks and failure in anchorage zone was not observed due to the strengthening effect of anchorage zone reinforcement.

  • A study of two phase chopper system with four separate groups of DC motors in powering. A novel two phase chopper system with four separate groups of DC motors which applies the principles of two phase chopper with two separate groups of DC motors is dealt with this article. The main circuit consists of eight sets of chopping parts, four diodes and four separate groups of DC motors. Four groups of DC motors are driven through the series and parallel connections to each other in accordance with the operating conditions of the choppers. Although the proposed chopper circuit requires more circuit elements than the conventional two phase chopper system with combined output or two phase chopper system with two separate groups of DC motors, it has the following advantages` (1). It is possible to drive twice as much motors as conventional system does, using esisting receiving-and equipments and motors. (2). It is possible to control load voltage continuously from 0 to source voltage by changing time-ratio from 0 to 1. (3). Load current division becomes equalized. Therefore it is possible to drive not only series motors but also shunt and separately exited motors. (4). When smoothing reactor L is small, harmonic components of the proposed circuit is not so large. Therefore, the value of L can be determined from viewpoints of allowable value of ripple-ratio and current unbalance factor.

  • This paper presents measurement error reduction technique of touch and step voltage of grounding system based on numerical analysis. When measuring touch and step voltage of grounding system, auxiliary current probes should be located at suitable places. However, the auxiliary probes can not be located at suitable places in such cases as there are buildings and pavements. Therefore, in this paper, we provided measurement error reduction technique of touch and step voltage of grounding system according to the positions of auxiliary probes and angle between auxiliary probes. Also, measurement error analyses of touch and step voltage of grounding system have been conducted using more than one current probe. Based on these analyses, recommended positions of auxiliary probes within allowable measurement errors were presented.

  • The nuclear transmutation technology to Incinerate the long lived radioactive nuclides and produce energy during the incineration process is believed to be one or the best solutions. HYPER(${\underline{HY}}brid {\underline{P}}ower {\underline{E}}xtraction {\underline{R}}$eactor)is the accelerator driven transmutation system which is being developed by KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). Lead-bismuth(Pb-Bi) is adopted as a coolant and spallation target material. In this paper, we performed the thermal-hydraulic analysis of HYPER target using the commercial code FLUENT, and also calculated thermal and mechanical stress of the beam window using the commercial code ANSYS. It is found that there is an optimum value for the window diameter and the maximum allowable beam current can be increased to 17.3 mA for the inner diameter of windows, 40 cm. Finally, the other shapes such as uniform or scanned beam were considered. The results of FLUENT calculations show that the uniform type is preferable to the other shapes of the beam in terms of the window and target cooling and the maximum window temperature is lower than that of the parabolic beam by $58 ^{\circ}C$ for the beam current, 13 mA.

  • The maximum output torque developed by the machine is dependent on the allowable current rating and maximum voltage that the inverter can supply to the machine. Therefore, to use the inverter capacity fully, it is desirable to use the control scheme considering the voltage and current limit condition, which can yield the maximum torque per ampere over the entire speed range. This controller is controlled speed using artificial intelligent PI(AIPI) controller. Also, this paper is proposed control of maximum torque per ampere(MTPA) of induction motor. The performance of the proposed induction motor drive with maximum torque control using AIPI controller is verified by analysis results at dynamic operation conditions.

  • Three types of 100 kW-class tidal stream turbines are proposed and their performance is studied both numerically and experimentally. Following a wind turbine design procedure, a base blade is derived and two additional blades are newly designed focusing more on efficiency and cavitation. For the three designed turbines, a CFD is performed by using FLUENT. The calculations predict that the newly designed turbines perform better than the base turbine and the tip vortex can be reduced with additional efficiency increase by adopting a tip rake. The performance of the turbines is tested in a towing tank with 700 mm models. The scale problem is carefully investigated and the measurements are compared with the CFD results. All the prediction from the CFD is supported by the model experiment with some quantitative discrepancy. The maximum efficiencies are 0.49 (CFD) and 0.45 (experiment) at TSR 5.17 for the turbine with a tip rake.

  • The objective of study is to evaluate design standards related to the allowable truck speeds, taper length and sign requirements together with the operating practices and economic justification for climbing lanes. Field surveys were carried out on seven climbing lanes, three on two-lane and four on four-lane freeways. Data collected are traffic volume, speed, usage rate and delay. It is found that current design criteria for determining the length of climbing lane, taper lengths, and traffic sign requirements must be upgraded. It is also recommended that regulations on the use of climbing lane be established to make it more effective. Further, economic analysis revealed that the climbing lane is economically justified for two-lane and four-lane freeway if the AADT is over 4,577 and 5,116 vehicles respectively.
