Control of Surface Chemistry and Electrochemical Performance of Carbon-coated Silicon Anode Using Silane-based Self-Assembly for Rechargeable Lithium Batteries

  • Silane-based self-assembly was employed for the surface modification of carbon-coated Si electrodes and their surface chemistry and electrochemical performance in battery electrolyte depending on the molecular structure of silanes was studied. IR spectroscopic analyses revealed that siloxane formed from silane-based self-assembly possessed Si-O-Si network on the electrode surface and high surface coverage siloxane induced the formation of a stable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer that was mainly composed of organic compounds with alkyl and carboxylate metal salt functionalities, and PF-containing inorganic species. Scanning electron microscopy imaging showed that particle cracking were effectively reduced on the carbon-coated Si when having high coverage siloxane and thickened SEI layer, delivering > 1480 mAh/g over 200 cycles with enhanced capacity retention 74% of the maximum discharge capacity, in contrast to a rapid capacity fade with low coverage siloxane.

  • 2-Thiouracil-5-sulfonylchloride 1 reacted with a series of aromatic and heterocyclic amines to give 2a-j. The same compound 1 was reacted with a series of sulphonamides giving different sulphonamides of type 3a-e. On the other hand compound 1 was allowed to react with p-aminoacetophenone givining compound 4 which in turn was allowed to react with derivatives of alkyl thiosemicarbazides to give thiosemicarbazones of type 5a-e, also compound 4 was monobrominated to give compound 6 which in turn was reacted thiosemicarbazones of some aldehydes to give the corresponding thiazole derivatives 7a-f. In the same time compound 4 was reacted with a series of aromatic and heterocyclic aldehydes givining chalcones 8a-g (Claisen-Schemidt reaction). Also compound 4 was allowed to react with a series of aromatic and heterocyclic aldehydes, ethyl cyano acetate and/or malononitrile, and ammonium acetate giving pyridine derivatives 9a-d and 10a-e respectively. The biological effects of some of the new synthesized compounds was also investigated.

Characteristics of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Ambient Air in Jeonju between July and November in 2002 (2002년 6월부터 11월까지 전주지역 대기 중 다환방향족 탄화수소의 특성)

  • Atmospheric concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured at the Chonbuk National University located in Jeonju, four times between June and November 2002, each time for five days. Twenty-four compounds including five alkyl PAHs and byphenyl were analyzed. Average total concentration of 24 PAHs was 85 $\pm$ 15 ng/$m^3$ and about 94% of PAHs existed in the gas phase. On an average, naphthalene accounted for about 30% of the total PAHs concentration. The gas/particle partitioning was not much varied during the measurement period. High molecular weight PAHs with five and six rings were primarily associated with fine particles less than 1 $\mu$m. Lower molecular weight PAHs were evenly distributed in fine and coarse particles so that their distribution was similar to that of TSP.

  • When (3R,4R)-1-(1-benzyloxycarbonyl-2-methyl-1-propenyl)-4-mercapto-3-phenylacetamidoazetidin-2-one(8) was reacted with carbon disulfide and alkyl halides in the presence of triethylamine, the ${\beta}$-lactam ring was cleaved to give (Z)-and (E)-1-alkylthio-5-benzyloxycarbonyl-6-methyl-2-phenylacetamido-4-aza-1,5-heptadien-3-one (13-16) or 2-benzyl-4-(3-benzyloxycarbonyl-4-methyl-1-oxo-2-aza-3-pentenyl)thiazole(17).

Cytotoxic Activity and Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships of Arylpropyl Sulfonamides

  • B13 is a ceramide analogue and apoptosis inducer with potent cytotoxic activity. A series of arylpropyl sulfonamide analogues of B13 were evaluated for their cytotoxicity using MTT assays in prostate cancer PC-3 and leukemia HL-60 cell lines. Some compounds (4, 9, 13, 14, 15, and 20) showed stronger activities than B13 in both tumor cell lines, and compound (15) gave the most potent activity with $IC_{50}$ values of 29.2 and 20.7 ${\mu}M$, for PC-3and HL-60 cells, respectively. Three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) analysis was performed to build highly reliable and predictive CoMSIA models with cross-validated $q^2$ values of 0.816 and 0.702, respectively. Our results suggest that long alkyl chains and a 1R, 2R configuration of the propyl group are important for the cytotoxic activities of arylpropyl sulfonamides. Moreover, the introduction of small hydrophobic groups in the phenyl ring and sulfonamide group could increase biological activity.

  • The rate of oxime formation of 2-furfural and 5-substituted-2-furfurals such as 5-methyl-2-furfural, 5-isopropyl-2-furfural, 5-tert-butyl-2-furfural, 5-isoamyl-2-furfural and 5-nitro-2-furfural have been measured at 15∼$45^{\circ}C$ in aqueous solution buffered at pH 7. Oxime formation for all the compounds investigated is second-order reaction and their activation energies observed are 5.50, 7.22, 7.03, 7.49, 7.78 and 4.97 kcal/mole, respectively. Hammett equation is obtained for 5-alkyl-2-furfurals and the reaction constants (${\rho}$) calculated at 15, 25, 35 and $45^{\circ}C$ are 2.010, 1.756, 1.541, and 1.311 respectively.

Detection of Long Alkyl Esters of Succinic and Maleic Acid Using TLC-MALDI-MS

  • Four esters of succinic and maleic acid were synthesized, separated by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). A comparison of matrix materials showed that 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,6-DHB) yielded a greater ionization efficiency than 2,5-DHB prior to TLC separation. The location of each ester sample on the TLC plate was estimated by comparing the developed plate with a duplicate plate that had been visualized by immersion in a $KMnO_4$ solution. Generally, mass spectra obtained from the $KMnO_4$-visualized plate were relatively poor. Reproducible mass spectra with high peak abundance were difficult to obtain using the 2,6-DHB matrix from crude synthetic esters extracted from the TLC plates. Significant improvements in both reproducibility and sensitivity were realized by using pencil lead as the MALDI matrix. The current methodology will be beneficial to organic chemists since it can provide a guideline for simple and rapid characterization of small organic compounds.

Synthesis and Mesomorphic Properties of New Achiral Liquid Crystals with 3-Alkoxy-2-(alkoxymethyl)-1-propoxy Swallow-Tails

  • New liquid crystalline (biphenylcarbonyloxy)benzoates with an achiral swallow-tail derived from 3-alkoxy-2- (alkoxymethyl)-1-propanol [(ROCH2)2CHCH2OH, R = Me, Et, Pr, Bu] were prepared. These liquid crystals exhibited the phase sequence (I-SmA-SmCalt-(SmCX)-Cr) and showed antiferroelectric-like Smectic C phase (SmCalt) at temperature lower, and temperature range broader than do the compounds containing a branched alkyl group as a swallow-tail. The temperature ranges of antiferroelectric phase were found to be 30-90 oC and crystallization temperatures were 4-60 oC. The binary mixture of an achiral swallow-tailed liquid crystal and a chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal, (S)-MHPOBC showed antiferroelectric smectic C phase at temperature much lower than the single chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal does.

Radiopharmaceuticals for Neurotransmitter Imaging (뇌 신경물질 운반체 영상용 방사성의약품)

  • Neurotransmitter imaging with radiopharmaceuticals plays major role for understanding of neurological and psychiatric disorders such as Parkinson's disease and depression. Radiopharmaceuticals for neurotransmitter imaging can be divided to dopamine transporter imaging radiopharmaceuticals and serotonin trnasporter imaging radiopharmaceuticals. Many kinds of new dopamine transporter imaging radiopharmcaeuticals has a tropane ring and they showed different biological properties according to the substituted functional group on tropane ring. After the first clinical trials with $[^{123}I]{\beta}-CIT$, alkyl chain substituent introduced to tropane ring amine to decrease time for imaging acquisition and to increase selectivity. From these results, $[^{123}I]PE2I$, [18F]FE-CNT, $[^{123}I]FP-CIT$ and $[^{18}F]FP-CIT$ were developed and they showed high uptake on the dopamine transporter rich regions and fast peak uptake equilibrium time within 4 hours after injection. $[^{11}C]McN$ 5652 was developed for serotonin trnasporter imaging but this compound showed slow kinetics and high background radioactivity. To overcome these problems, new diarylsulfide backbone derivatives such as ADAM, ODAM, AFM, and DASB were developed. In these candidates, $[^{11}C]AFM$ and $[^{11}C]DASB$ showed high binding affinity to serotonin transporter and fast in vivo kinetics. This paper gives an overview of current status on dopamine and serotonin transporter imaging radiopharmaceuitcals and the development of new lead compounds as potential radiopharmaceuticals by medicinal chemistry.

Synthesis of Silicone Surfactant for Antifoamer (저기포성 실리콘 계면활성제의 합성)

  • The hydrosilylation is an addition reaction of Si-H bond to unsaturated double bonds, which provides a convenient mechanism to synthesize poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylsiloxane)copolymer having siloxy units in polymer backbone. In this study, Poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylsiloxane) copolymer was synthesized through the polymerization reaction of cyclopentasiloxane with poly(methyl-hydrogen) siloxane. Silicone-hydrogen functional group of the poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylsiloxane) copolymer was substituted to the alkyl groups by hydrosilylation. And their structure was analyzed with FT-IR, H-NMR and GPC instruments, respectively. Surface tension of the synthetic compounds is increased from 22dyne/cm to 25dyne/cm according to increase additional EO moles. The cmc which was evaluated by surface tension was ranged $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-4}mol/L$ and it was decreased according to increase of dimethyl siloxyl content. HLB number of these surfactants was evaluated 9.5 to 11.5 range. These silicone surfactants is applied to self-emulsifier defoamer and personal care products as surface tension depressant, emulsifier, foam control agent.
