  • The use of polyphenol extracts from radiata pine (Pinus radiata) bark as raw materials for bio-foams was investigated along with the optimal NaOH extraction conditions. The targeted yield of alkaline extracts was 60%, and the targeted pH was 11 to 12. The radiata pine bark was composed of 70% of a 1% NaOH extract, which contained mainly polyphenols, such as proanthocyanidin (PA). As the particle size of the bark decreased, the yield of the 1% NaOH extracts increased from 57 to 87%. A range of NaOH concentrations, liquor ratios, and extraction times were explored to establish an economic polyphenol extraction method. More than 60% of the alkaline extract was extracted, and the pH of the extract was approximately 12 when the optimum extraction conditions were employed, i.e., a liquor to bark ratio of 5:1, a NaOH dosage of 17 to 18% based on the bark weight, and a 1 h extraction time. Following neutralization of the alkaline extract, structural analysis indicated severe structural changes in the PA during the alkaline extraction. Because the alkaline extract was barely soluble in the solvent used for the structural analyses, it is assumed that chemical modification is required to increase the solubility of the alkaline extract for the production of bio-foams.

  • Competitive solvent extraction of alkaline earth metal cations from water into organic solvent containing the carboxylic acid crown ether and analogous crown ether phosphonic acid monoethyl esters were investigated. sym-(n-Decyldibenzo)-16-crown-5xyacetic acid $\underline{1}$ and monoethyl sym-(n-decyldibenzo)-16-crown-5-oxymethylphosphonic acid $\underline{3}$ are structurally identical except for the ionizable groups. Both of them provide similar extraction behavior in terms of efficiency and selectivity, but monoethyl sym-(n-decyldibenzo)-16-crown-5-oxymethylphosphonic acid $\underline{3}$ showed higher alkaline earth metals loadings at acidic or neutral media. Monoethylsym-(n-octyldibenzo)-16-rown-5-oxymethylphosphonic acid $\underline{2}$ showed better selectivity and alkaline earth metals loading than did the analogous sym-(n-octyldibenzo)-16-crown-5-oxymethyldiphosphonic acid $\underline{6}$.

  • The competitive solvent extractions of alkali and alkaline earth metals by di-ionizable calix[4]arene nano-baskets were studied using nine conformers of calix[4]arene nano-baskets. The objective of this work is to assess the variation of macrocycle conformation, orientation and position of pendant moieties upon the extraction parameters (efficiency, selectivity and $pH_{1/2}$) of the complexes. The results revealed that alternation of ring conformation in calixarene scaffold affects the solvent extraction parameters towards alkali and alkaline earth metals, while changing the orientation of pendant moieties from ortho- to para- as well as cis- to trans-analogues depicted no changes in those extraction parameters.

  • The extraction behavior of an alkaline protease using reversed micelles was investgated. The reversed micellar solution consisted of AOT in isooctane. It was found that distribution of arkaline protease into the organic phase increased at lower pH, lower ionic strength, and higher AOT concentration. When the real fermentation broth was extracted of alkaline protease, an activity yield of 20% and a purification factor of 2.0 were obtained.

  • A comparison of alkali metal cation and alkaline earth cation solvent extraction was made for three additional monoionizable crown ethers and one diionizable crown ether. sym-(n-Octyldibenzo)-16-crown-5-oxyacetic acid $\underline{1}$ exhibited high efficiency and selecvity in solvent extraction of alkali metal cations with respect to that observed with alkaline earth cations. Sizes of $Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ appropriately match with the cavity size of monoethyl sym-bis[4(5)-tert-butylbenzo]-16-crown-5-oxymethylphosphonic acid $\underline{3}$. As the result, $Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ are the best extracted. sym-(n-Octyldibenzo)-16-crown-5-oxymethyldiphosphonic acid $\underline{4}$was found to be somewhat selective for $Na^+$ over $Li^+$ and other alkaline earth metal cations. In the complexation of alklaine earth cations by crown ether diphosphonic acid $\underline{4}$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ are the appropriate sizes, but lager $Ba^{2+}$ may be due to favorable formation of a sandwich type complex between the crown ether cavity and the dianion of the deprotonated crown ether phoaphonic acid moiety.

  • Competitive solvent extraction of the mixure of alkali metal and alkaline earth cation from water into organic solvent containing the crown ether carboxylic acid and anlogous crown ether phosphonic acid was investigated as follows. The lipophilic group is found to strongly influence to the selective extraction in the mixed systems from only alkali metal cation for sym-(n-decyldibenzo)-16-crown-5-oxyacetic acid $\underline{1}$ to mostly alkaline earth metal cation for sym-bis[4(5)-tert-butylbenzo]-16-crown-5-oxyacetic acid $\underline{3}$. Monoethyl sym-(n-decyldibenzo)-16-crown-5-oxymethylphosphonic acid $\underline{2}$. and monoethyl-sym- bis]4(5)-tert-butylbenzo]-16-crown-5-oxymethylphosphonic acid $\underline{4}$ showed good selectivity for $Na^+$ over $Mg^{2+}$, the second extracted ion. Structural variation in the crown ether phosphonic acid somewhat was influenced to the extraction selectivity in the mixed systems. when variation of the ionized group is influenced in the mixed systems, the selectivity of $Na^+$ as the second extracted ion was much better crown ether carboxylic acid $\underline{1}$ than crown ether phosphonic acid $\underline{2}$, while the efficiency of $Na^+$ extraction was better $\underline{2}$ (83% total loading) than $\underline{1}$ (32%).

  • Increasing water consumption produced sludge problems of the water treatment plants. The objective of this study is to investigate aluminium coagulants recovery n acidic and alkaline conditions. Water treatment plant sludge produced in Pusan Metropolitan City were tested for the aluminium extraction process. Experiment samples were obtained in summer from water treatment plants of Deoksan and Myongjang. Aluminium coagulants used in these plants during the test period were polyaluminium chloride(PAC), polyaluminium sulfate organic(PSO), polyaluminium sulfate silicate(PASS). Aluminium contents of water treatment sludge were in the range of 7.2~10.9% of the total solids. The recovery percentages for aluminium and iron by acidic extraction method was evaluated to 88% and 42% respectively. Extracted mass variation for other materials such as iron, manganese, total organic carbon was observed during the extraction operation. Alkaline extraction produced more than two times amount of total organic carbon than that in the acidic extraction process.

  • The dietary fiber was extracted from apple pomace with various concentrations of acidic, alkaline solvents and water in $24.4{\sim}29.3%$ yield. The extractions of water-soluble dietary fiber with acidic(6.85%) and alkaline solvent(6.55%) were more effective than the water extraction(6.0%). The higher extraction yield was obtained with increased concentration of acidic or alkaline solvents. The content of galacturonic acid was higher in the order, 0.01 M HCl(77.5%)>0.05 M HCl(76.8%)>$H_2O(76.1%)$>0.05 M NaOH(73.8%)> 0.01 M NaOH(69.0%) and the extraction with acidic solvent showed the highest pectin yield. The color value increased by extraction with solvent in higher concentration. And at equal concentration, the color value of alkaline extract was higher than that of acidic exctract. There was no relationship between the color value and the extraction yield of dietary fiber. In the investigation on the rheological properties, the shear stress increased in proportion to galacturonic acid contents. While water-soluble dietary fiber extracted with acid and water represented Newtonian rheological properties, the alkaline extract was inclined to have converting property from pseudoplastic to Bingham pseudoplastic with increment of alkaline concentration. In the studies on the time-dependence of apparent viscosity, the thixotropic property with hysteresis loop was observed in alkaline extract.
