In current research work, the aerodynamics performance of a newly designed large flying V aircraft is numerically investigated. Three Flying V configurations, with V-angles of 50°, 70° and 90° that represent the minimum, moderate, and maximum configurations respectively, were designed and modeled to assess their aerodynamic performance at cruise flight conditions. The unstructured mesh was developed using ICEM CFD and Ansys-Fluent was used as an aerodynamic solver. The developed models were numerically simulated at cruise flight conditions with a Mach number equal to 0.15. K-ω SST turbulence model was chosen to account for flow turbulence. The authors performed steady flow simulations. The results obtained from the experimentation reveal that the maximum main angle configuration of 90° had the highest CLmax value of 0.46 compared to other configurations. While the drag coefficient remained the same for all three configurations, the 50° V-angle configuration achieved the maximum stall angle of 35°. With limited stall delay benefits, the flying V possesses no sufficient stability, due to the flow separation detected at whole elevon and winglet suction side areas at AoA equal and higher than 30°.
In this study, the reliablility based design optimization is peformed for an aircraft wing. The flexiblility of the wing was assumed by considering the interaction modeled by static aeroelasticity between aerodynamic forces and the structure. For a multidisciplinary design optimization the results of aerodynamic analysis and structural analysis were included in the optimization formulation. The First Order Reliability Method(FORM) was employed to consider the uncertainty of the designed points.
Airframe internal and external specifications are the product of intensive intellectual efforts and technological breakthroughs distinguishing each aircraft manufacturer. Therefore, geometrical information characterizing aircraft primary aerodynamic surfaces remain classified. When attempting to model real aircraft, many members of the aeronautical community depend on their personal expertise and generic design principles to bypass the confidentiality obstacles and sketch real aircraft airfoils, which therefore vary for the same aircraft due to the different designers' initial assumptions. This paper presents a photogrammetric shape prediction method for deriving geometrical properties of real aircraft airframe by utilizing their publicly accessible static and dynamic visual content. The method is based on extracting the visually distinguishable curves at the fairing regions between aerodynamic surfaces and fuselage. Two case studies on B-29 and B-737 are presented showing how to approximate the sectional coordinates of their wing inboard airfoils and proving the good agreement between the geometrical and aerodynamic properties of the replicated airfoils to their original versions. Therefore, the paper provides a systematic reverse engineering approach that will enhance aircraft conceptual design and flight performance optimization studies.

The joined-wing is a new concept of the airplane wing. The fore-wing and the aft-wing are joined together in a joined-wing. The range and loiter are longer than those of a conventional wing. The joined-wing can lead to increased aerodynamic performance and reduction of the structural weight. In this research, dynamic response optimization of a joined-wing is carried out by using equivalent static loads. Equivalent static loads are made to generate the same displacement field as the one from dynamic loads at each time step of dynamic analysis. The gust loads are considered as critical loading conditions and they dynamically act on the structure of the aircraft. It is difficult to identify the exact gust load profile. Therefore, the dynamic loads are assumed to be (1-cosine) function. Static response optimization is performed for the two cases. One uses the same design variable definition as dynamic response optimization. The other uses the thicknesses of all elements as design variables. The results are compared.

In general, a conventional flap on an aircraft wing can reduce the aerodynamic efficiency due to geometric discontinuity. On the other hand, the aerodynamic performance can be improved by using a shape-morphing wing instead of a separate flap. In this research, a new flap morphing mechanism that can change the wing shape smoothly was devised to prevent aerodynamic losses. Moreover, a prototype wing was fabricated to demonstrate the morphing mechanism. A shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuator was used for the morphing wing. The specific current range was measured to control the SMA actuator. The deflection angles at the trailing edge were also measured while various currents were applied to the SMA actuator. The trailing edge of the wing changed smoothly when the current was applied. Moreover, the deflection angle also increased as the current increased. The maximum frequency level was around 0.1 Hz. The aerodynamic performance of the deformed airfoil by the SMA wire was analyzed by using the commercial program GAMBIT and FLUENT. The results were compared with the results of an undeformed wing. It was demonstrated that the morphing mechanism changes the wing shape smoothly without the extension of the wing skin.

The Bird strike to small aircraft has not been an issue because of it's low speed and usage as a private aircraft. So, the compliance of the bird strike regulation is limited to large fixed-wing aircraft such as the commuter category in FAR Part 23 and the civil aircraft in FAR Part 25, generally. However, the forecast of dramatic increasing of VLJ(Very Light Jet) and (light time of general aviation due to Air-taxi for the point to point transportation, would rise up the need of bird strike regulations and a safety enhancement in normal and utility categorized aircraft. In this study, the safety enhancement concept using a crushable foam for the bird strike to small aircraft wing leading edge, and the evaluation about the safety of the bird strike to small aircraft are proposed using the explicit finite element analysis.
With the recent development of defense technology, various aircraft armaments/equipments are being developed. Among them, cruise guided weapons(missile) for launching aircraft can be installed on aircraft aftersecuring reliability and safety through varioustests. In order to avoid collision with aircraft, missile separated from aircraft must release restraint of wing at the specified time, control wing in the specified direction. In order to confirm this, a test system that can control MIL-STD-1760 according to safety separation procedure and verify release performance is required. test system needs a function to check circuit for release of restraints and a function to check driving performance by controlling MIL-STD-1760. In addition, test system should be simulate environment separated from aircraft. This paper presented a testsystemthat can verify circuit and driving performance mounted on missile according to the safety separation procedure, and it was confirmed that it was normally separated from aircraft through flight tests.

Numerical simulations of 3D aircraft configurations are performed in order to understand the effects of turbulence models on the prediction of aircraft's aerodynamic characteristics. An in-house CFD code that solves 3D RANS equations and two-equation turbulence model equations are used. The code applies Roe's approximated Riemann solver and an AF-ADI scheme. Van Leer's MUSCL extrapolation with van Albada's limiter is also adopted. Various versions of Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence models as well as Coakley's $q-{\omega}$ model are incorporated into the CFD code. Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST models include the standard model, the 2003 model, the model incorporating the vorticity source term, and the model containing controlled decay. Turbulent flows over a wing are simulated in order to validate the turbulence models contained in the CFD code. The results from these simulations are then compared with computational results from the $3^{rd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Numerical simulations of the DLR-F6 wing-body and wing-body-nacelle-pylon configurations are conducted and compared with computational results of the $2^{nd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Aerodynamic characteristics as well as flow features are scrutinized with respect to the turbulence models. The results obtained from each simulation incorporating Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model variations are compared with one another.

A canard type aircraft, which has good wing stall and stall/spin proof characteristics, is being developed. The previous first and second prototypes, having full depth core sandwich type wing and fixed landing gear, was built for test flights. Newly developing Firefly will be equipped with retractable landing gear and conventional foam core sandwich laminate for wing and fuselage. For manufacturing, composite material process has been studied including coupon tests. Wet lay-up onto foam core with glass fabric using lay-up mold has been chosen, and composite material parts are cured under room temperature and atmospheric pressure condition. In general, molded parts show so good surface smoothness and standardized quality that are best in mass production. In this study, we present the mold technology and development status for small aircraft firefly.
