Edge flames have been interested as a basic structure that is concerned to flame stabilization and re-ignition of non-premixed flames. The edge flame consists of a lean premixed flame, a rich premixed flame, and a diffusion flame. In order to investigate fundamental structures of the edge flames at the conditions near the flammability limits, edge flames were stabilized within a heated narrow channel. Highly diluted partially premixed methane was used, and the flow rates of air and the partially premixed mixture were controlled. Various flame behaviors, including a transition between ordinary edge flames and premixed flames, were observed. Flame stabilization characteristics were examined as well. All flame stabilization conditions in this study showed a similar trend: characteristic time scales were inversely proportional to the equivalence ratio defined at the burner inlet. Finally, an interesting flame structure having a weak diffusion branch enveloped by a closed premixed branch was found near the flammability limits even in a fuel-air mixing layer. This structure was named as a "flame-drop" and the importance of this structure was first suggested.
A mixture fraction formulation is used to numerically simulate the structure of diluted axisymmetric methane-air nonpremixed counterflow flames. The effects of global strain rate and gravity wert! investigated and results were compared. Fuel of a mixture of 20% methane and 80% nitrogen by volume and oxidizer of pure air at low and moderate global strain rates $a_g= 20, 40, 80 s^{-1}$ in normal and zero gravity were computed. It is shown that the numerical method is capable of predicting the structure of counterflow flames in normal and microgravity environments at low and moderate global strain rates.
To measure laminar burning velocity in methane/air/ethylene mixture flame, propagating centrally ignited spherical premixed flame to radial direction was measured by high-speed schlieren images with elevated pressure. In this study, The experimentally measured unstretched laminar burning velocities of methane was compared with GRI mech 3.0 to validate experimental data and choose the radius range, respectively. numerical prediction using the PREMIX code with GRI mech 3.0, USC mech II,, and Wang mech were evaluated through comparison with experimental burning velocity with consideration of extrapolation on linear/nonlinear model.
A pressure-based, unstructured finite volume method has been applied to couple the chemical kinetics and fluid dynamics and to capture effectively and accurately the steep gradient flame field. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by two methodologies including the pressure-correction algorithm and the projection scheme. A stiff, operator-split projection scheme for the detailed nonequilibrium chemistry has been employed to treat the stiff reaction source terms. The conservative form of the governing equations are integrated over a cell-centered control volume with collocated storage for all transport variables. Computations using detailed chemistry and variable transport properties were performed for two laminar reacting flows: a counterflow hydrogen-air diffusion flame and a lifted methane-air triple flame. Numerical results favorably agree with measurements in terms of the detailed flame structure.
The Numerical simulation was performed on the flow field around the two-dimensional rectangular bluff body in order to complement the previous experimental results of the bluff body stabilized flames [1]. For both fuel ejection configurations against an oxidizer stream, the flame stability was affected mainly by vortex structure and mixing field near bluff body. FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulator) based on the LES(Large Eddy Simulation) was employed to clarify the isothermal mixing characteristic and wake flow pattern around bluff body. The air used atmosphere and the fuel used methane. The result of counter flow configuration shows that the flow field depends on air velocity but the mixing field is influenced on the fuel velocity. At low fuel velocity the fuel mole fraction is below the flammable limit and hence the mixing is insufficient to react. Therefore, as the result, the flame formed at low fuel velocity is characterized by non-premixed flames. For the flow field of co-flow configuration, flame stability was affected by fuel velocity as well as air velocity. the vortex generated by fuel stream has counter rotating direction against the air stream. Therefore, the momentum ratio between air and fuel stream was important to decide the flame blow out limit, which is result in the characteristic of the partially premixed reacting wake near extinction.
The experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of partial premixing, varying the equivalence ratio, mixing degree, swirl intensity, mixing length on the characteristics of flame structure and NOx emission. Experiments were conducted in a dump combustor at 1 bar using methane as fuel. Inlet air temperature was 570K. OH chemiluminescence images were acquired with an ICCD camera. As a result of the experimental investigation of characteristics of flame and NOx emission in partial premixed combustor, we can conclude the results as below. With the increase of swirl number, The flame length decreases and the flame width increases and it helps flame stabilization. It means that lean flammability limit is extended. With the increase of mixing of fuel-air length ratio, Flame goes to be stabilized and NOx emission and $OH^{\ast}$ intensity decrease. Through the comparison of preceding results, It is possible that the exhausted NOx emission from a gas turbine combustor will be able to predict through the $OH^{\ast}$ intensity.
This article describes a comparison on laminar burning velocity measured by Bunsen and spherical flame methods of synthetic natural gas (SNG) with various composition of hydrogen. In this study, the laminar burning velocity measurements were employed by Bunsen burner and cylindrical constant combustor at which flame images were captured by Schlieren system. These results were also compared with numerical based on CHEMKIN package with GRI 3.0, USC-II and UC Sandiego mechanism. In case of spherical flames, the suitable flame radius range and theoretical models were verified using the well-known previous results in methane/air flames. As an experimental condition, hydrogen content of SNG was adjusted 0% to 11%. Equivalence ratios of Bunsen flames were adjusted from 0.8 to 1.6. On the other hand, those of spherical flames were adjusted from 0.6 to 1.4, relatively. From results of this study, the both laminar burning velocities measured in Bunsen and spherical flame methods were resulted in similar tendency. As the hydrogen content increased, the laminar burning velocity also increased collectively. Laminar burning velocity of measured SNG-air flames was best coincided with GRI 3.0 mechanism by comparison of reaction mechanisms.
The effect of electric fields on flame speed has been investigated experimentally by observing propagating premixed flames in a tube for methane/air mixtures. The flame speeds were measured in both the normal and micro gravity conditions to substantiate the measurements. The results show that the flame speeds were enhanced by both the AC and DC electric fields, as the flame approached to the high voltage electrode located on the one end of the tube. The enhancement of flame speed was proportional to the square root of the electric field intensity, defined as the voltage applied divided by the distance of flame from the high voltage electrode, when the electric field intensity is sufficiently large. When the electric field intensity was low, there existed critical intensities, below which the electric fields did not influence the flame speed. This critical electric field intensity correlated well with the flame speed.

A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the flow characteristics at the spark electrode gap and the combustion characteristics of a homogeneous charged methane-air mixture under various overall charge pressures, excess air ratios and ignition times. The flow characteristics, including the mean velocity and turbulence intensity, were analyzed with a hot wire anemometer. Combustion pressure development measured by piezoelectric pressure transducer, a flame propagation image acquired by ICCD camera and exhaust emissions measured by 2-valve gas chromatography were used to investigate effects of initial pressures, excess air ratios and ignition times on the combustion characteristics. It was found that the mean velocity and turbulence intensity had the maximum value around 200-300 ms and then decreased gradually to a near-zero value after 3000 ms and that the combustion duration was shorten and the flame speed and laminar burning velocity had the highest value under the condition of an excess air ratio of 1.1, an overall charge pressure of 0.15 MPa and an ignition time of 300 ms in the present study. The $CO_2$ concentration was proportional to the ignition time and overall charge pressure, the $CO_2$ concentration was proportional to the excess air ratio, and the UHC concentration was inversely proportional to the ignition time and overall charge pressure.
