  • In this study, we investigated the casting designs for fuel tank valves for LPG automobiles. The valves we studied have two cavities inside the part. There is inevitable air entrapment inside the cavities. In order to reduce this kind of casting defect, we carried out computer simulations of molten metal flow during the diecasting process of the target products. The main process parameters were the ingate position, product direction, and injection velocity. We also examined the possible use of vacuum diecasting. The position of the air entrapment was almost identical for all the ingate positions and product directions. We found that the change of the injection velocity affects the position of the air entrapment. In case of vacuum diecasting, the position of the air entrapment was similar to the previous cases, but it is expected that the air entrapment will be highly reduced in a real situation due to the vacuumed space.

  • It is well known that the water infiltration rate depends on soil properties such as soil water content, water head, capillary suction, density, hydraulic conductivity, and porosity. However, most of proposed infiltration models assume that the air phase is continuous and in equilibrium with the atmosphere or air compression and air entrapment on infiltration was not considered. This study presents experimental results on unsaturated water infiltration to relate air entrapment and hydraulic conductivity function based on soil air properties. The objectives of this study were to measure change of soil air pressure ahead of wetting front under air drain and air confined condition to find the confined air effect on infiltration rate, to reduce the entrapped air volume related with soil air pressure to increase the soil permeability, and to make a basis of infiltration process model for the purpose of improvement of infiltration rate in the homogeneous soil column. The results of the work show that soil air pressure increases according to increasement of the saturated soil depth rather than the wetting front depth during infiltration process.

  • A cell-entrapment technique using compressed air was applied to Bifidobacterium longum KCTC 3128 for the improvement of bifidobacteria viability. The main cell-entrapment matrix used was alginate, and viability improvement of the B. longum entrapped in alginate lattices was monitored along with the effects of other additional biopolymers. A prerequisite for acquiring consistent results was the uniformity of bead size and cell distribution which was achieved by using compressed air and mixing the cell suspension with sterilized alginate powder, respectively. The viability losses of the B. longum entrapped in alginate beads in the presence of three different substances logarithmically increased in relation to the reaction time, and proportionately decreased with an increased alginate concentration and bead diameter. The strongest improvement in B. longum viability was exhibited with a bead containing 3% alginate and 0.15% xanthan gum.

  • Pneumorrhachis, which involves the entrapment of air or gas within the spinal canal, is a rare clinical entity, and the pathogenesis and etiologies of this uncommon entity are various and can present a diagnostic challenge. Usually, pneumorrhachis represents an asymptomatic epiphenomenon but it can produce symptoms associated with its underlying pathology. Here, we report a rare case of symptomatic epidural pneumorrhachis accompanying pneumothorax. Possible pathogenic mechanisms are discussed and a review of the literature is included.

  • We report a case of an entrapped lung after the pectus bar repair of a pectus deformity. The entrapped lung was found incidentally during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for pneumothorax. Based on VATS exploration, multiple bullae seemed to be the cause of the pneumothorax, but the entrapped lung was suspected to have been a cause of the air leakage.

  • UV-NIL is a promising technology for the fabrication of sub-100 nm features. Due to non-uniformity of the residual layer thickness (RLT) and a strong possibility of defects, many UV-NIL processes have been developed and some are commercially available at present, most are based on the 'step-and-repeat' nanoimprint technique, which employs a small-area stamp, much smaller than the substrate. This is mainly because, when a large-area stamp is used, it is difficult to obtain acceptable uniform residual layer thickness and/or to avoid defects such as air entrapment. As an attempt to enable UV_NIL with a large-area stamp for high throughput, we propose a new UV-NIL tool that is able to imprint 4 inch wafer in a low vacuum environment at a single step.

  • Whole-cell immobilization of the hydrocarbon rich microalgae, Botryococcus braunii and B. protuberans, in alginate beads under air-lift batch cultures resulted in a significant increase in chlorophyll, carotenoid, dry weight, and 1ipid contents at stationary and resting growth phases, as compared to free cells. Photosynthetic activity in both the species, of Botryococcus was enhanced, relative to free cells, at any growth phase of cultures. Immobilization exerted a protective influence on ageing of the cultures as reflected by higher chlorophyll and dry weight contents. Entrapment also stabilized the chlorophyll and carotenoid contents even at stationary and resting phases as compared to free cells in both the species.

  • The characteristics of thixoforming process can decrease liquid segregation because of the improvement in fluidity in a globular microstructure state and utilizes flow without an air entrapment. Therefore, in order to obtain the sound parts of metal matrix composites by using thixoforming process which has co-existing solidus-liquidus phase, it is very important to design a die shape property and to obtain the fabrication conditions which affect the unifomity of the solid fraction on unfilling state and various defects throughout the fabricated parts. The die designs and fabrication conditions to obtain the good piston part are proposed for thixoforging process of metal matrix composites. When reheated metal matrix composites billets were transferred to the closed die gate, thixoforging were carried out under the various pressure(60, 80, 100MPa) with controled forging speed. The mechanical properties such as hardness and tensile strength for thixoforged parts have been investigated after T6 heat treatment.

  • The entrapment of intracranial air from the check valve system results in a tension pneumocephalus. It should be distinguished from simple pneumocephalus because they are intracranial space-occupying masses that can threaten life. Communicating hydrocephalus is a serious and frequent complication of post-traumatic head injury. Head injury is one of the most common causes in etiopathogenesis of communicating hydrocephalus. Here, we describe a case of a 65-year-old man who developed communicating hydrocephalus after a post-traumatic tension pneumocephalus. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of communicating hydrocephalus developed after a post-traumatic tension pneumocephalus. Although the exact pathogenic mechanisms underlying the cascade following trauma remain unclear, communicating hydrocephalus after a tension pneumocephalus could be considered a possible complication.
