  • In order to determine the optimum planting density of Job's Tear, We investigatedagronomic characters, yield components and yields by using Ewon and Heuksuk cultivar. The characters, plant height, stem diameter, number of stems per $m^2$ and number of leaves per $m^2$, etc., were excellent in $60{\times}15cm$ planting space for the Ewon and Heuksuk local cultivar. Both the weight of 100 grains and that of 1 liter also higher for the Ewon local cultivar, and yield of stem and seed were the most excellent in $60{\times}15cm$ planting space for the Ewon and Heuksuk local cultivar. For the Ewon and Heuksuk, the analysis of variance for agronomic characters following the difference of planting density were acknowledged to be worth of attention.

  • This experiment was conducted to identify the superior corn hybrids for silage production and to determine the combining ability of their parental inbred lines. A 7-entry diallel cross was evaluated for grain and stover yields, and agronomic characters under 3 different seasons. Hybrids Hi34 x Tx601, Hi26 x Hi34, and Hi29 x Hi34 showed high total dry matter yields. In general, late maturing hybrids had higher grain and silage yields than early maturing hybrids. Leaf area index was correlated with grain and stover yields. Rust rating was negatively correlated with yields and all characters, indicating that rust (Puccinia sorghi) was one of the major factors affecting yields. Diallel analysis showed that inbred Hi34 which was late in maturity and resistant to rust was the best combiner for both grain and silage yields. General combining ability (GCA) and specific com-bining ability (SCA) effects for yields and other characters were significant, suggesting that both additive and non-additive gene effects are involved for those characters. Ratio of GCA/SCA mean squares showed that GCA effects were more important than SCA effects for yields and other characters. GCA x season and SCA x season interactions were significant for grain and stover yields, revealing that gene effects were not stable for those yields under dissimilar environments.

  • The field evaluation were conducted on dihaploid progenies derived from anther culture of F1 plant of Drama x Sohyang (N. tabacum L.) The mean values of agronomic and chemical traits of dihaploids such as Nicotine, length/width, plant height, Leaf length, leaves per plant and Yield were greater than those of tar parents. The correlation coefficient of dihaploids were similar to those of conventional lines and varieties. In path analysis, in relating yield components to yield, leaves per plant and leaf width had a direct effect on Yield, but the other components such as plant height, leaf length and days to flowering influenced Yield indirect way.

  • Thirty-one Tobacco Introduction (Nicotiana tabacum L.) lines from Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, were assayed for their resistance to tobacco mosaic virus. The T.1.'s were grouped into two classes according to symptoms - symptomless and local lesion. Tobacco Introductions in the symptomless group yielded better than the local lesion group but the leaf quality was lower. The chemical composition of cured leaves was similar in both groups. Considering various agronomic characters, T.I. 1504 in the local lesion group is recommended as a new source for the breeding of TMV resistance.

  • This study was carried out to compare the root yields, root characters, saponin and ginsenosides contents of 6-year-old p. ginseng and p. quinquefolium. These two ginseng species showed difference in the diameter and ten비h of mainroot. The main root length or p. quinquefolium was shorter than that of p. ginseng, whereas Jakyung-jong and Hwangsook-jong of P. ginseng showed similar root length. Proximate composition were similar between the two species, however, crude fibercontent was significantly higher in main and lateral root of Jakyung-jong and Hwang sook-jong of P ginseng than P quinquefolium. In regard to mineral contents of root, P ginseng contained more Ca and Mn and less Fe and Al than P. quinquefolium. P. quinquefolium contained more of Rbl and Rd of protopanaxadiol saponin, and less or Re, $Rg_1$ and $Rg_2$ of protopanaxatriol saponin than P ginseng. However, no Rf was detected in the p. quinquefolium. Key words Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolium, ginseng character, ginsenoside.

  • To investigate dose-effect of a chemical mutagen, sodium azide on a rice elite line, Suweon472, seed aliquots were treated with five different concentrations of sodium azide. The degree of mutation levels of each aizde concentration were estimated by using DNA fingerprinting techniques such as RAPD and AFLP. Some selected mutant lines ($M_4$) were also subjected for DNA fingerprinting to estimate their mutation levels by comparing the banding patterns of the wild type, Suweon 472. RAPD and AFLP fingerprinting patterns indicated that dose-effect of different azide concentrations was not clear. With allele description of detected AFLPs among favorable mutant lines, it was possible to discriminate each mutant line from others which have similar phenotypes and reactions against pathogens. AFLP fingerprinting patterns of waxy mutant lines, otherwise, were highly homogeneous as well as their phenotypic and agronomic characters.

  • Cytoplasmic male- sterile Hyangchio, derived from male- sterile Burley 21 containing N. megalosiphon cycloplasm, and male- fertile Hyangchio (Korean local aromatic variety) were evaluated in replicated pot trials in green-house. Male- sterile Hyangchio was comparable to the male- fertile Hyangchio for six agronomic traits and total alkaloids content. The only significant difference was that the male- sterile Hyangchio flowered 2.3 days later than the male- fertile Hyangchio. M ale- sterile Hyangchio has increased the yield than the male- fertile Hyangchio significantly in case of non- topped.
