  • Drones of honeybee (Apis mellifera) have been regarded as a useful value only when mating with queen bee. However, the drone pupae have been reported to be nutritionally valuable, and a potential beekeeping product. In this study, drone pupae extracted with 5% acetic acid were used to measure anti-thrombosis related fibrinolytic activity using Strup and Mullertz fibrin plate method. As a result, the drone pupae extract showed higher effect of fibrinolytic activity(clear zone diameter 20.83mm) compared to the human plasmin (clear zone diameter 12.93mm) used as a positive control. It was suggested that the extract of drone pupae can be developed as a functional material helping prevention or treatment of various vascular diseases.

  • To find diapause-related genes, we were performed by differential hybridization with three types of [${\alpha}-^{32}P$]dCTP-labeled total cDNA probes synthesized from diapause-prepared, diapause-maintained and diapause-activated stage of Bombus ignitus queen. Nine individual cDNA clones were found to be differentially expressed in diapause-maintained and diapause-activated stage. Among these clones, BIDC9(BIDC ; Bombus ignitus differentially expressed clone) was analyzed through full-length sequencing and expression pattern analysis. This clone was specifically expressed in the thorax organ. The effect of Juvenile hormone analog(JHA) and $CO_2$ treatment was examined. JHA treatment induced the expression of BIDC9 cDNA clone abruptly after 4 day of treatment. $CO_2$ treatment induced also the clone after 2 day of treatment. BIDC9 cDNA was identified as Bombus ignitus diapause gene contained an open reading frame of 1376 bp encoding 255 amino acids.

  • In natural conditions, the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (L.) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), colonizes in warm temperate regions, and is active in Korea from May through October. Information on black soldier fly rearing, which is affected by seasonal factors in Korea, is limited. This species colonizes and oviposits in a wide variety of decomposing vegetable and animal matter. For mass rearing of black soldier flies, the egg deposition methods are dependent on sunlight and oviposition sites. In this study, we investigated the substrates and oviposition sites preferred by black soldier fly in artificial rearing system. Our results showed that as black soldier flies prefer mating under sunlight, they prefer ovipositing at sites where adequate sunlight and food substrate are available. Further detailed research is required to develop methods for artificially rearing black soldier fly throughout the year in Korea.

  • A new silkworm variety, Kumhwangjam, with a sex-limited cocoon color for spring rearing season is F$_1$ hybrid between Jam 309, a Japanese race bred from Y1/9153, and Jam 310, a Chinese race from Y1/8586. In the local adaptability test performed at 8 local areas in spring rearing season of 2003, major characteristics of Kumhwangjam were mainly similar to those of the check variety Kumokjam. The new silkworm variety, Kumhwangjam, showed a sex-limited cocoon color: yellow for female and white for male with elliptical cocoon shape. This sex-limited cocoon color can be used as a valuable marker for discrimination between female and male for various purposes.

  • The black soldier fly larvae are able to decompose various organic wastes such as livestock manures and food wastes. We tested whether the quality of the insect derived compost, i.e. larval feces, was comparable to that of a commercial fertilizer. The results show that the chemical composition and the growth rate of cabbages grown on the insect derived compost are virtually identical to those on the commercial fertilizer. Therefore the insect derived compost will be an ideal substitute to commercial fertilizers.

  • All of silkworm varieties reared in farmhouses are first generation hybrids, for the production of these hybrid silkworms precise and labor-saving sex discrimination is necessary. The new variety "Hanbyeolnue" is biparental sex-limited larval marking yellow cocoon variety which was bred from biparental sex-limited strain of Japanese originated Jam 319 and Chinese originated Jam 320. Productivity test of Hanbyeolnue in 2015 showed high healthiness and short larval period. The Hanbyeolnue was evaluated as an excellent variety which can be utilized for special purpose silkworm such as male pupae or Cordyceps production.
