This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hydropower factors (watershed, gross head), operation ratio and unit electricity cost on the benefit-cost ratio (B/C ratio) of small hydropower using agricultural reservoirs. The equation of B/C ratio was expressed as a function of watershed area, gross head, operation ratio and unit electricity cost. The benefit increased with watershed area, gross head and unit electricity cost, while the cost increased with watershed area and gross head but decreased with operation ratio. The B/C ratio increased with watershed area, gross head, operation ratio and unit electricity cost. While the effect of gross head on the B/C ratio decreased with watershed area, the effect of operation ratio and unit electricity cost on the B/C ratio increased with watershed area. The operation ratio is an important factor to affect the B/C ratio and therefore we need to develop hydropower for the heightened dams to expect high operation ratio due to continuous water release. The unit electricity cost is also an important factor to affect the B/C ratio and the B/C ratio was always below 1 unless unit electricity cost is over 60 Won/kWh under given conditions. The reservoirs with economic feasibility for small hydropower development were three in 21 when the equation of B/C ratio was appled to the study reservoirs. The results can be used to choose the appropriate reservoir with economic feasibility for development of small hydropower.
The Asan Bay area Korea is situated in an unbalance or water supply and demand relating to the Ansung, Sapkyo, Dangjin and Youmwha rivers and their estuary reservoirs. The multi-reservoir operation was studied by the Hierarchical Operation Model for Multi-reservoir System(HOMMS) assuming that these four estuary reservoirs were linked to each other in order. The result of this study shows that storage capacity deficiency in 2011 was estimated as 8 MCM in the Sapkyo and 31 MCMin Dae Ho estuary reservoir, respectively. In case of linking four reservoirs, the water deficiency will not occurs in all the reservoirs even if additional agricultural water of 78 MCM/yr was supplied. Total additional water demand for agricultural, municipal and industrial uses was estimated as 321.9 MCM/yr while additional supply by linking the reservoirs was estimated as 160.4 MCM/yr. 50% of additional demand. The remaining 161.5MCM/yr would be supplied transferring other watershed.
The study aimed to project inflows and demmands for the agricultural reservoir watersheds in South Korea considering a variety of regional characteristics and the uncertainty of future climate information. The study bias-corrected and spatially downscaled retrospective daily Global Climate Model (GCM) outputs under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 emission scenarios using non-parametric quantile mapping method to force Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. Using the historical simulation, the skills of un-calibrated SWAT model (without calibration process) was evaluated for 5 reservoir watersheds (selected as well-monitored representatives). The study then, evaluated the performance of 9 GCMs in reproducing historical upstream inflow and irrigation demand at the five representative reservoirs. Finally future inflows and demands for 58 watersheds were projected using 9 GCMs projections under the two RCP scenarios. We demonstrated that (1) un-calibrated SWAT model is likely applicable to agricultural watershed, (2) the uncertainty of future climate information from different GCMs is significant, (3) multi-model ensemble (MME) shows comparatively resonable skills in reproducing water balances over the study area. The results of projection under the RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenario generally showed the increase of inflow by 9.4% and 10.8% and demand by 1.4% and 1.7%, respectively. More importantly, the results for different seasons and reservoirs varied considerably in the impacts of climate change.
This study was carried out to investigate safety evaluation of agricultural reservoirs due to raising the embankment. The seepage analysis and large-scale model test were performed to compare and analyze the pore water pressure(PWP), leakage quantity, settlement and piping phenomenon in the inclined core type and the vertical core type embankments. The PWP after raising the embankment showed smaller than before raising the embankment and the stability for piping after raising the embankment. The allowable seepage quantity and the allowable leakage for the steady state and transient conditions is within the range of safe management standard. After raising the embankment in the inclined core, there was no infiltration by leakage. For the vertical core, the PWP showed a large change by faster infiltration of pore water than in the inclined core. In a rapid drawdown, inclined core was remained stable but the vertical core showed a large change in PWP. Settlement after raising the embankment showed larger amounts of settlement than before raising the embankment. The leakage quantity before raising the embankment and the inclined core type showed no leakage. From the result, an instrument system that can accurately estimate a change of PWP shall be established for the rational maintenance and stabilization of raising the embankment for agricultural reservoirs.
Main purpose of this article is to classify reservoirs corresponding to their physical characteristics, for example, dam height, dam width, age, repair-works history. First of all, data set of 13,976 reservoirs was analyzed using k means and self organized maps. As a result of these analysis, lots of reservoirs have been classified into four clusters. Factors and their critical values to classify the reservoirs into four groups have been founded by generating a decision tree. The path rules to each group seem reasonable since their survivor function showed unique pattern.
This study analyzed data on the pore water pressure, the ground water level, the horizontal displacement and the resistivity monitoring from instrument system, which is established to evaluate the safety in reservoirs. The pore water pressure in the embankment ranged from $0.035{\sim}1.116kg/cm^2$. The seepage that piping showed, as well as the leakage from the reservoirs are acceptable for the safety management of the reservoir. The maximum horizontal displacement and direction analyzed from the measured inclinometer data gives us very effective information to evaluate the safety in reservoirs. The resistivity monitoring technique, which is obtained on the reservoir crest, is an efficient tool to detect leakage zone. The safety index (SI) was predicted by the resistivity monitoring, and was evaluated to have a safety level of 0.8-1.0 at all reservoirs. Safety evaluations of reservoir through instrument systems are effective when studying the embankment, when the results of the instrument system have been analyzed compositively.
Agricultural reservoirs importantly role for paddy rice cultivation with about 18,000 numbers, so that understanding of operational rules for the reservoirs is quite meaningful for proper irrigation water supply. In this study, a survey was conducted to investigate a key reservoir operational elements over nationwide. The target reservoirs are mainly operated by KRC (Korea Rural Community Corporation) and 221 water management persons in province office of KRC were involved in this survey. The key reservoir operational elements including starting and ending time for irrigation, transplanting water supply periods, midsummer drainage periods and drought response strategy were surveyed. The results of this study demonstrated that the key elements for reservoir operation depend on weather, rice variety and cultivation conditions.
The purpose of this study is to develop regression equations between annual specific sedi- ment of reservoirs and physiographic factors of watersheds. 122 irrigation reservoirs, which have irrigation areas equal to or larger than 200 ha, located in Korea except Cheju province are used in the analysis. Simple regression analyses between the specific annual sediment and each of the physical characteristic factors of the reservoirs are carried out at first. Then, multiple regression analyses between the annual specific sediment and the physical characteristic factors with high correlation coefficients in the simple regression analyses are made. The results obtained from this study are as follows : 1. The results of the sirnple regression analyses show that in each province the watershed area, the length of mainstream, the circumferential length of watershed have high cor- relation coefficients (R=0.814-0.986), and that drainage density, reservoir capacity per watershed area, drainage frequency, basin relief have low correlation coefficients (R=0. 387-0.955). 2. The purposed multiple regression equations between the annual specific sediment of reservoirs and three major characteritic factors of watersheds, namely, the watershed area, the circumferential length of watershed, and the length of mainstream, are proposed as given in Table 2. 3. The result of the simple regression analyses with respect to the reservoir elevation except Jeonnam province, which has very different characteristics comparing to other provinces, shows that watershed area, main stream length and circumferential length have high correlation coefficients (R=0.806-0.884) in low-elevation reservoirs and intermediate- elevation reservoirs, but low correlation coefficients (R=0.639-0.739) in high-elevation reservoirs. 4. With respect to the reservoir elevation, the proposed multiple regression equations bet- ween the annual specific sediment of reservoirs and the three major characteristic factors of watershed which have high correlation coefficients are proposed as given in Table 5.
This study was performed to evaluate effects of physical characteristics of both watershed and reservoir on nutrient-chlorophyll relationship in Korean reservoirs. Simple linear models were developed with published data in Korea including 415 reservoirs and 11 multi-purpose dams, and physico-chemical parameters of reservoirs and characteristics relationship of models were analyzed. Theoretical residence time in Korean reservoirs was strongly correlated with the ratio of TA/ST (drainage area + surface area / storage volume) in the logarithmic function. As a result of monthly nutrients-chlorophyll-a regression analysis, significant Chl-a-TP relationship appeared during May~July. The high Chl-a yields per total phosphorus appeared during this time (R$\^$2/=0.51, p<0.001, N= 1088). Chlorophyll-a demonstrated much stronger relationship with TP. than TN. Seasonal algal-nutrient coupling were closely related with N:P ratio in the reservoir water, and it was, in turn, dependent on the monsoon climatic condition (precipitation). Based on the results of regression analysis and high N:P ratio, a major limiting factor of algal growth appeared to be phosphorus during this time. Unlikely TA/ST ratio, DA/SA ratio (drainage area f surface area) was likely to influence directly on the nutrient-Chl-a relationship, indicating that if storage volume and inflowing water volume were the same, algal biomass could be developed more in reservoirs with large surface area. Thus, DA/SA ratio seemed to be an important factor to affect the development of algal biomass in Korean reservoirs. With low determination coefficient of TP-Chl-a relationship, our findings indicated not only nutrient (phosphorus) but also other physical factors, such as DA/SA ratio, may affect algal biomass development in Korean reservoirs, where actual residence time appears to be more closely related to reservoir surface area rather than storage volume.
Water management information system used by KRC(Korea Rural Community Corporation) operates widely including RIMS, RAWRIS and etc. Other systems are operated by each government department, for example, K-water(Korea Water Resources Corporation)'s WAMIS. Even though small scale reservoirs managed by city/country is just about 12% of total water resource, the reservoirs are important for controlling and securing water resource as the reservoirs, including about 14,700 reservoirs nationwide, are located at main subwater shed. So, it is necessary for KRC to execute integrated informatization. In this research, system analysis was performed to comprise the integrated water management information system including the reservoirs controlled by city and country at first. And then, improvement plan for informatization of the reservoirs controlled by city and country was proposed. This study proposed the improvement plan for informatization of the reservoirs managed by the city and country, which was systematically proposed through systemic analysis including from reservoir site to the integrated water management information system. The objects includes 1. Reservoir (basin, facilities, water depth-area curve, benefiter area), 2. Field supervision organization for the reservoir 3. Local government administrative organization, 4. Center organization 5. Network for information transfer, 6. integrated water management information system. As the reservoirs controlled by city and country are important considering managing water and facilities, operated by local government with minimum budget due to budget problem, securing sufficient budget is necessary to form an specialized organization controlling facilities and the water management system in terms of drought and flood control.
