Post-Affricate Phonatory Processes in Korean and English: Acoustic Correlates and Implications for Phonological Analysis

  • This study investigates phonation modes of vowels following the affricate consonants in Korean and English- -tense affricate /c'/, lenis affricate /c/, and aspirated affricate /$c^{h}$/ for Korean; voiced affricate /$\check{J}$/ and aspirated affricate /c/ for English. The investigation makes significant use of the H1*-H2* measure (a normalized amplitude difference between the first and second harmonics) to provide acoustic correlates of the phonation types. The major findings for English are that the H1*-H2* measure at the vowel onset was significantly larger in post-aspirated position than in post-voiced position. The Korean data showed the H1*-H2* measure at the vowel onset to be significantly higher in the post-aspirated class than in the post-tense class. On the other hand, the Fo values for the post-lenis vowels were significantly lower than those of the other two classes during the first half of the vowel. Based on the phonetic results, this study argues for the need to incorporate the [stiff vocal folds] and [slack vocal folds] features into the phonological treatments of Korean affricates, while maintaining the two features [constricted glottis] and [spread glottis].

Perceptual Cues for Korean Affricate vs. Fricative Distinction (한국어 마찰음과 파찰음의 변별 지각 단서)

  • This paper tests whether frication duration plays an important role in perceiving fricatives and affricates. In other words, whether the frication duration is an acoustic cue for distinguishing fricatives from affricates. For this purpose two types of experiments are carried out. In the first experiment two sets of stimuli are created by decreasing the frication duration of fricatives by 10ms, and in the second experiment two steps of stimuli are created by increasing the frication duration of affricates by 10 ms. The results of the present study show that frication duration is the primary acoustic cue in perceiving fricative/affricate distinction in Korean. In addition, the amplitude rise time and burst information appear to play secondary roles in perceiving the distinction by a series of perception tests.

Voicing in intervocalic lax obstruents /p, t, k, c/ of Korean

  • There are two hypotheses with reference to voicing in Korean intervocalic lax stops /p, t, k/ and affricate /c/: (1) the phonologically voiceless lax stops /p, t, k/ and affricate /c/ are realised as voiced allophones in the intervocalic position; (2) the shorter the lax consonant, the higher the percentage of voicing. But the literature reveals that there are views rejecting or doubting them. To clarify these, an experiment was carried out, using a Sun Sparcstation, twelve native speakers of Korean and speech materials embedded in a sentence frame. The results showed that the extent of voicing in lax stops and affricate was too inconsistent to support the full voicing hypothesis, and shorter duration (faster speech) did not necessarily cause a higher percentage of voicing.

Japanese and Korean speakers' production of Japanese fricative /s/ and affricate /ts/

  • This study analyzed the pronunciations of Japanese fricative /s/ and affricate /ts/ by 24 Japanese and 40 Korean speakers using the rise and steady+decay durations of their frication part in order to clarify the characteristics of their pronunciations. Discriminant analysis revealed that Japanese speakers' /s/ and /ts/ were well classified by the acoustic boundaries defined by a discriminant function. Using this boundary, Korean speakers' production of /s/ and /ts/ was analyzed. It was found that, in Korean speakers' pronunciation, misclassification of /s/ as /ts/ was more frequent than that of /ts/ as /s/, indicating that both the /s/ and /ts/ distributions shift toward short rise and steady+decay durations. Moreover, their distributions were very similar to those of Korean fricatives and affricates. These results suggest that Korean speakers' classification error might be because of their use of Korean lax and tense fricatives to pronounce Japanese /s/, and Korean lax and tense affricates to pronounce Japanese /ts/.

Articulatory and Acoustic Evidence for the Complete Neutralization of Manner of Articulation in Korean Affrication

  • This study is concerned with articulatory and acoustic experiments about the change of the stop /t/ into its counterpart affricate before derivational and inflectional suffixes beginning with /(h)i/. The present phonetic results show that the stop consonant is articulatorily and acoustically completely neutralized into the underlying plain affricate. Thus this study provides another instance of complete neutralization of manner of articulation in Korean in addition to Kim and Jongman (1996).

The Place of Articulation of Korean Affricates Observed in LPC Spectra

  • This paper attempts to acoustically examine the place of articulation of Korean affricates. In order to pursue an acoustic analysis of where Korean affricates are articulated, we resort to LPC spectra of the Korean plain affricate /c/ in intervocalic position, based on theoretical assumptions (e.g., Stevens 1993a), and compare the data to that of the Korean alveolar consonants /t, s/ in the same context. Our phonetic results show that in intervocalic position, the Korean plain affricate is alveolar just like the Korean alveolar consonants /t, s/, supporting the articulatory studies of $Skali{\check{c}}kov{\acute{a}}$ (1960) and Kim (1997).

An EPG Study of the Articulatory Difference between Korean and English Affricates (한국어 파찰음과 영어 파찰음의 조음적 차이에 관한 연구)

  • Using EPG, the stop and fricative portions of the Korean and English afficates were examined to find out whether the stop and fricative portions of Korean affricates are the same as those of English ones in articulation, as generally assumed in the literature. The English affricate in the word 'choose' is classified as alveopalatal just like the Korean affricate in the word 'cam'. The results of the EPG data showed that Korean affricates were not articulated the same as those in English, especially in the stop portion. In English, the stop portion of 'choose' was quite similar to /t/ as 'tooth', but in Korean, the stop portion of 'cam' was somewhat different from /t/ in 'tam'. More specifically, the stop portion of /t/ in 'tam' was articulated with the contact at the upper teeth and the alveolar ridge, but the stop portion of /t/ in 'cam' was articulated with the contact in the alveopalatal region. This shifting in the place of articulation of the stop portions of the Korean affricate (from dental and alveolar to alveopalatal) can be explained. Unlike English affricates, the stop portions of Korean affricates and the fricative portions of Korean affricates are co-articulated at the same place of articulation.

Comparing the Intelligibility of Spastic and Flaccid Types (경직형과 이완형 마비말장애의 명료도 비교)

  • Among the types of dysarthria, spastic and flaccid types are the most prominent manifestations. The objectives of the present research are (1) to discover the phonetic contrasts that differentiate spastic dysarthria from flaccid dysarthria, (2) to analyze the degrees of predictability of each phonetic contrast for intelligibility in spastic and flaccid dysarthrias and to compare them. The 'phonemic contrast word intelligibility pairs' for dysarthric speakers were tested and proved to be useful for clinical assessment of and research on dysarthria. In the group of spastic type, it showed that initial fricative vs. affricate and front vs. back vowel contrasts are transmitted relatively less effectively than flaccid type. In the group of flaccid type, initial glottal vs null contrast is transmitted less effectively than spastic type. The overall intelligibility of spastic dysarthria was predicted by multiple regression analysis with 88% accuracy by three phonetic contrasts(initial fricative vs. affricate; front vs. back vowels; initial consonant correlates). And the intelligibility of flaccid dysarthria was predicted by two phonetic contrasts(initial nasal vs. stop, front vs. back vowels) with 60% accuracy.

On the Place of Articulation of the Korean Lenis Affricate (한국어 연파찰음의 조음위치에 관한 연구)

  • An EPG study was conducted to examine the place of articulation of Korean lenis affricate /c/. Results indicated that the place of articulation of the stop portion /t/ of /c/ was shifted to the place of articulation of the fricative portion /s/ of /c/. Also, we found that the shifting in the place of articulation occurred because of the gap of the place of articulation between /t/ and /s/ (two portions of /c/). From this study, we proposed that the /e/ is articulated at the same place of articulation of /s/ both for its stop portion and its fricative portion. Also, we observed that the place of articulation of /t/ is articulated farther front than that of /s/ and /c/.

  • In this paper, the starting point of affricate is detected from the first predictor coefficient of a 12-pole linear predictive coding (LPC) analysis and phonemic segmentation is done through measuring short time energy and zero crossing rate. By this segmentation method, the duration of an aspirate can be mearsured in order to detect an aspirate or not.
