Partitioning of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) to a biosurfactant, hydroxypropyl-${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (HPCD), was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using HPCD to remove HOCs from soil/groundwater. HOC partitioning to HPCD was very fast, with over 95% of the complexation occurring within 10 min. Some influence of solution chemistry and HOC concentration on HOC-HPCD complex formation coefficients was observed. HPCD sorption on soil as quantified by both a fluorescence technique and total organic carbon measurements was negligible, indicating no significant affinity of HPCD for the solid phase. Although the HOC solubilization capability of HPCD was lower than that of synthetic surfactants such as SDS and Tween 80, HPCD can be effective in removing sorbed HOCs from a model subsurface environment, primarily because of its negligible sorption to the solid phase (i.e., all the HPCD added facilitates HOC elution). However, in contrast with conventional surfactants, HPCD becomes relatively less effective for HOC partitioning with increasing HOC size and hydrophobicity. Therefore, comparisons between HPCD and synthetic surfactants for enhanced remediation applications must consider the specific HOC(s) present and the potential for surfactant material losses to the solid phase, as well as other more generally recognized considerations such as material costs and potential toxicological effects.
Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is considered as an antitumor agent owing to its ability to induce apoptosis of cancer cells without imparting toxicity toward most normal cells. TRAIL is produced in poor yield because of its insoluble expression in the cytoplasm of E. coli. In this study, we achieved soluble expression of TRAIL by fusing maltose-binding protein (MBP), b'a' domain of protein disulfide isomerase (PDIb'a'), or protein disulfide isomerase at the N-terminus of TRAIL. The TRAIL was purified using subsequent immobilized metal affinity chromatography and amylose-binding chromatography, with the tag removal using tobacco etch virus protease. Approximately 4.5 mg of pure TRAIL was produced from 125 ml flask culture with a purification yield of 71.6%. The endotoxin level of the final product was $0.4EU/{\mu}g$, as measured by the Limulus amebocyte lysate endotoxin assay. The purified TRAIL was validated and shown to cause apoptosis of HeLa cells with an $EC_{50}$ and Hill coefficient of $0.6{{\pm}}0.03nM$ and $2.41{\pm}0.15$, respectively. The high level of apoptosis in HeLa cells following administration of purified TRAIL indicates the significance and novelty of this method for producing high-grade and high-yield TRAIL.

We have prepared organophilic inorganic particles and polyimide (PI) nanocomposite having excellent thermal stability and high dielectric constant that can be used for electronic application such as capacitor. We have chosen barium titanate (BT), a high dielectric constantmaterial and its surface was coated with nylon 6 to improve the affinity with PI. The FT-IR and TEM studies showed that the organophilic inorganic particle (BTN) has a polymer shell with thickness of 5 nm. We have suggested that it is possible to control the thickness of coating surface and also indicated the relationship between the ratio of inside and outside radius of BTN and the weight fraction of BT. The PI nanocomposite films based on poly(amic acid) and BTN were prepared by cyclodehydration reaction. The homogeneous dispersion of BTN in PI matrix was identified by using SEM. We have investigated the effect of BTN content on the coefficient of thermal stability, integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), and dielectric constant of PI nanocomposite films.
In order to apply eco-friendly poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) into barrier packaging materials, six different PPC/exfoliated graphite (EFG) nanocomposite films with different EFG were successfully prepared by a solution blending method. Their water sorption behavior was gravimetrically investigated as a function of the EFG content and interpreted with respect to their chemical structure and morphology. The water sorption isotherms were reasonably well fitted by Fickian diffusion model, regardless of morphological heterogeneities. With increasing the EFG content, the diffusion coefficient and water uptake decreased from $12.5{\times}10^{-10}cm^2sec^{-1}$ to $7.2{\times}10^{-10}cm^2sec^{-1}$ and from 8.9 wt% to 4.2 wt%, respectively, which indicates that the moisture resistance capacity of PPC was greatly enhanced by incorporating EFG into PPC. The enhanced water barrier property of the PPC/EFG nanocomposite films with the high aspect ratio EFG makes them potential candidates for versatile packaging applications. However, to maximize the performance of the nanocomposite films, further researches are required to increase the compatibility of EFG in the PPC matrix.
This study intended to investigate the environmental factors including soil and vegetation in order to understand the environmental and ecological characteristics of seven different habitats of Viola websteri. These habitats, according to investigations, are mostly located on the slope of mountains facing north at an altitude of 343 m to 991 m above sea level with angle of inclination from 1 degree to 33 degrees. The type of soil is mostly sandy loam and the average field capacity of soil is 28.97%. Their average organic matter is 16.63%, soil pH 5.62, and available phosphorus is 14.75%. A total of 133 vascular plants are identified in 18 quadrates of seven habitats. Dominant species of woody plants in seven habitats are represented as Acer pictum subsp. mono and Quercus mongolica in tree layer, and Acer pictum subsp. mono in subtree layer. Importance value of Viola websteri is 9.66%, as regards the herbaceous layer, and five highly ranked species such as Meehania urticifolia(8.53%), Pseudostellaria heterophylla(6.51%), Hylomecon vernalis(5.15%), Oxalis obtriangulata (4.52%), and Pseudostellaria davidii(4.15%) are considered to be an affinity with Viola websteri in their habitats. The degree of their average species diversity is 1.32, and that of dominance and evenness are 0.08 and 0.89, respectively. Correlation coefficients analysis based on environmental factors, vegetation and soil analysis shows that the coverage of Viola websteri is correlated with silt and sand ratio, and coverage of tree layers are correlated with species richness and altitude. Cluster analysis based on vegetation structure of each habitats are forms a three groups.
Pervaporation separation of toluene from water were studied using hydrophobic copolyimide membranes. The copolyimide membranes were prepared from 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and two diamines (polysiloxane diamine (SIDA)/2-(perfluorohexyl) ethyl-3,5-diaminobenzene (PFDAB)). The pervaporation properties for toluene/water were investigated in terms of mol ratio of SIDA/PFDAB in polyimide membranes. Sorption- and diffusion-related properties were measured to analyze the permeation properties in solution-diffusion theory, It was found that as the SIDA content in the membranes increased, sorption of toluene and sorption selectivity of toluene/water increased due to high affinity of siloxane moiety toward toluene. Diffusion coefficient of toluene and diffusion selectivity of toluene/water also increased with SIDA content due to high free volume of siloxane moiety. As the results, the permeation flux and pervaporation selectivity increased markedly from 0.005 $kg/m^2h$ to 049 $kg/m^2h$ and from 9 to 6380, respectively.
To search of a new porcine pheromonal odorants, the comparative molecular similarity indices analysis(CoMSIA) between porcine odorant binding protein(pOBP) as receptor and ligands of green odorants 2-(Cyclohexyloxy)tetrahydrofurane derivatives as substrate molecule were conducted and disscused quantitatively. In the optimized CoMSIA model(I-AI) with chirality($I:\;C_{1'}(R),\;C_2(S)$) in substrate molecules and atom based fit alignment(AE) of the odorants the statistical PLS results showed the best predictability of the binding affinities based on the LOO cross-validated value ${r^2}_{cv.}\;(q^2=0.856)$ and non cross-validated conventional coefficient(${r^2}_{ncv.}=0.964)$). The structural distinctions of the highest active molecules were able to understand from the interaction between pOBP and green odorants in the contour maps with CoMSIA model.
In recent times, sea level increasing caused by abnormal weather and global warming, sea-sand dredging and complex development causes various kind of erosion damages onto the coastal area in the world. The various types of erosion control and protection methods are applied but there are no signs of fruitful effectiveness. The PC concrete protection block for shore protection structure is practically installed in globally but most of structures in the present day became villainous because of bad accessability. In this study, hydrophilic revetments for control and protection of coastline erosion will be developed in order to make up for a faculty of the shore erosion protection block with better accessibility and excellent protection ability. Experimental measurements were researched to insure for the capacity and facility on reflection coefficient, overtopping volume, and overtopping height characteristics of newly developed shore erosion protection block in model tests. As the result, hydraulic model tests show much excellent than the general step block. Field tests were carried out also to verify through vegetative test on an affinity and construction work test of control-protection on coastline erosion with actual utilization. In the latter case, deposition of sand accumulation occurred in fairly short time at the established reaches and then we can be confirmed to utilize for newly developed block as the revetments for control and protection of coastline erosion.
Poly(ether-block-amide)(PEBAX$_{(R)}$) resin is a thermoplastic elastomer combining linear chains of hard-rigid polyamide block interspaced soft-flexible polyether block. It was believed that the hard polyamide block provides the mechanical strength and permselectivity, whereas gas transport occurs primarily through the soft polyether block. The objective of this work was to investigate the gas permeation properties of carbon dioxide and methane for PEBAX$^{(R)}$-1657 membrane, and compare with those obtained for other grade of pure PEBAX$^{(R)}$, PEBAX$^{(R)}$-2533 and PEBAX$^{(R)}$ based hybrid membranes. The hybrid membranes based PEBAX$^{(R)}$ were obtained by a sol-gel process using GPTMS ((3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane) as the only inorganic precursor. Molecular structure and morphology of membrane were analyzed by $^{29}Si$-NMR, DSC and SEM. PEBAX$_{(R)}$-2533 membrane exhibited higher gas permeability coefficients than PEBAX$^{(R)}$-1657 membrane. This was explained by the increase of chain mobility. In contrast, ideal separation factor of $CO_2/CH_4$ for PEBAX$^{(R)}$-1657 membrane was higher than PEBAX$^{(R)}$-2533 membrane. It was explained by the decrease of diffusion selectivity caused by increase of chain mobility. For PEBAX$^{(R)}$/GPTMS hybrid membrane, gas permeability coefficients were decreased with reaction time. Gas permeability coefficient of $CH_4$ was more significantly decreased than $CO_2$. It can be explained by the reduction of chain mobility caused by the sol-gel process, and strong affinity of PEO segment with $CO_2$. Comparing with pure PEBAX$^{(R)}$-1657 membrane, ideal separation factor of $CO_2/CH_4$ for PEBAX$^{(R)}$/GPTMS hybrid membrane has decreased to 4.5%, and gas permeability coefficient of $CO_2$ has increased 3.5 times.
This study investigated the environmental factors and conducted a RAPD analysis for a better understanding of the environmental characteristics and regional genetic variation in samples from 18 different areas of Viola diamantiaca. The habitats are mostly located on the slopes of mountains facing north at an altitude ranging from 614 m to 1,462 m above sea level with angles of inclination ranging from 3 degrees to 30 degrees. A total of 268 vascular plant taxa are identified in 35 quadrates of 18 habitats. The importance value of V. diamantiaca is 11.58%, and four highly ranked species, Sasa borealis (5.61%), Meehania urticifolia (5.21%), Ainsliaea acerifolia (3.62%), Pseudostellaria palibiniana (3.60%) are considered to have an affinity with V. diamantiaca in their habitats. The degree of their average species diversity is 1.36, while this metric for their evenness and dominance are 0.89 and 0.07, respectively. The average field capacity of the soil is 25.99%, with organic matter at 17.47%, and the pH is 5.19. The soil texture was confirmed as sandy loam of eleven and loam of seven. The result of the RAPD analysis, among 78 bands amplified with a primer, 64 (84.6%) showed polymorphism. Eighteen populations could be classified into five groups with similarity coefficient values ranging from 0.53 to 0.86. The Mt. Jiri population, which is geographically segregated, shows basal branching within the 18 populations. Five populations, including two in the southern district in Gangwon-do and three in Chungcheongbuk-do, form a distinct clade. Four populations in the central district of Gangwon-do and Mt. Bohyeon in the Gyeongsangbuk-do clade form a sister to the clade containing two populations in Gyeonggi-do and five populations of the northern district in Gangwon-do. The Mt. Gariwang population is placed between the southern district and the central district in the Gangwon-do clades.
