  • This study investigated gender differences in contribution of antisocial personality and affective empathy to psychopathy. Two hundred fifteen college students (male, 118; female,97) completed three measures including the PPI-R(Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised), the PAI-ANT(Personality Assessment Inventory-Antisocial Features), and the EETS (Emotional Empathy Tendency Scale). According to the results, the mean scores of PPI-R and EETS in male group were higher than in female group. Antisocial features were positively associated with psychopathy in both male and female groups and negatively with affective empathy. Males showed that the scores of affective empathy were negatively associated with those of antisocial features and psychopath. Females showed that the scores of affective empathy were negatively associated with those of antisocial personality and psychopathy but the correlation was significant only with the scores of antisocial behavior (ANT-A). To scrutinize the differences between male and female groups, the scores on the PAI and EETS were compared between 30% upper and 30% lower groups based on the scores of the PPI-R. According to the results, the upper group of the scores on the PPI had higher scores on the PAI and lower scores on the EETS. The differences of the scores on the EETS between high-psychopathy and low-Psychopathy groups were bigger in male group than in female group. Explanations and implications of the results were discussed and the directions of the future studies were suggested.

  • This research aims to examine the relationships between empathy and attitudes toward curricula integration of engineering students. To achieve this goal, first, differences in empathy and attitudes toward curricula integration among engineering students were examined. Second, the effects of attitudes toward curricula integration, as perceived by engineering undergraduate students, on empathy were explored. A total of three hundred and two engineering undergraduate students from three universities in Korea responded to survey based on a two-variables scale. The findings were that, firstly, a positive correlation among sub-factors of empathy and attitudes toward curricula integration was identified. Secondly, attitudes toward curricula integration could explain about 12% of empathy. The practical implications of these findings are discussed herein, with particular attention on education for promotion of empathy for engineering students.

  • This study was undertaken to recommend a dementia education program for college students, and to understand the outcome on knowledge and attitude towards dementia, awareness of aged support, and cognitive-affective empathy. Totally, 40 college students in C city, K do, were enrolled for the study, and divided into two groups of 20 each: experimental group and control group. The experimental group subjects were provided a 12-hour dementia education program; effectiveness of this program has been verified in later studies. Data were collected from November 5, 2018 to December 7, 2018; collection was before, after, and 4 weeks after the program was provided to the experimental group. Control group data were also collected in the same time frame. Data analysis was done using IBM SPSS WIN/21.0, and the percentage, mean and standard deviation were analyzed using Shapiro-Wilks test, $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact probability test, Independent t-test, Friedman test, Mann-Whitney U and Repeated Measure ANOVA. Knowledge of dementia (F=19.80, p<0.001), attitude toward dementia (z=-4.10, p<0.001), and awareness of aged support (F=6.26, p=0.017) had a significant interaction between group and time; however, cognitive-affective empathy showed no correlation (F=1.32, p<0.256). We therefore suggest strengthening the contents of future education program for dementia, developing a customized program for cognitive-affective empathy by considering subject characteristics, and further research verifying the effectiveness of the program.

  • The study examined the influences of age, empathy and perspective taking ability on altruistic lying in 5 and 6 year old children. Eighty three children answered a question as to whether a protagonist would lie after listening to three vignettes involving altruistic lies. Korean versions of the Affective Situation Test(AST) and cognitive perspective taking task were used to measure children's empathy and perspective taking respectively. The results of the study showed that there were significant differences in altruistic lying by age. Altruistic lie by children was positively related with their age, empathy and perspective taking ability. In particular, age and perspective taking ability are important factors influencing children's altruistic lie in young children in Korea.

  • Social scientists have studied interaction between human beings, while computer scientists have expanded the research domain from human-human to human-machine, human-agent, or machine-machine. The reason why an adoption of Smart Work is failed is an anxiety about ICT usage which middle managers have. It is important to explore the concept both to reduce an anxiety on an application and to increase continuance to use it. Therefore this study takes "empathy" as a key factor to play a leading role both to relieve the anxiety about the application and to improve the intention to use it. The data is gathered from a survey of undergraduate who have experience to use MS-Access. The findings show that application empathy decrease the application anxiety, but the empathy increase the continuance mediated by cognitive and affective attitude.
