The safety of road vehicles on the ground in crosswind has been investigated for many years. One of the most important fundamentals in the safety analysis is aerodynamic characteristics of a vehicle in crosswind. The most common way to study the aerodynamic characteristics of a vehicle in crosswind is wind tunnel tests to measure the aerodynamic coefficients and/or pressure coefficients of the vehicle. Due to the complexity of wind tunnel test equipment and procedure, the features of flow field around the vehicle are seldom explored in a wind tunnel, particularly for the vehicle moving on the ground. As a complementary to wind tunnel tests, the numerical method using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be employed as an effective tool to explore the aerodynamic characteristics of as well as flow features around the vehicle. This study explores crosswind effects on a high-sided lorry on the ground with and without movement through CFD simulations together with wind tunnel tests. Firstly, the aerodynamic forces on a stationary lorry model are measured in a wind tunnel, and the results are compared with the previous measurement results. The CFD with unsteady RANS method is then employed to simulate wind flow around and wind pressures on the stationary lorry. The numerical aerodynamic forces are compared with the wind tunnel test results. Furthermore, the same CFD method is extended to investigate the moving vehicle on the ground in crosswind. The results show that the CFD results match with wind tunnel test results and the current way using aerodynamic coefficients from a stationary vehicle in crosswind is acceptable. The CFD simulation can provide more insights on flow field and pressure distribution which are difficult to be obtained by wind tunnel tests.
The aerodynamic characteristics (subglottal pressure (Ps) and mean airflow rate (MFR)), fundamental frequency (Fo), intensity (I), vocal efficiency (VE), and closed quotient (CQ) were compared during a sustained vowel /o/ sound under three conditions: in a comfortable loudness and pitch level (condition 1), in a maximum loudness level with a fixed pitch (condition 2), and in a maximum loudness level without a fixed pitch (condition 3). Also, multiple regression analyses were done to measure the aerodynamic characteristics affect on the VE and the CQ in each condition. The results showed the Fo, Ps, MFR, VE, and CQ increased as I increased with and without fixed pitch. Most notably, VE in condition 3 was the highest of all the conditions, but CQ was not very high. By the results of multiple regression analysis, VE was significantly affected by I and Ps in all conditions; Fo was the other main key for affecting VE in high pitch. However, none of the aerodynamic characteristics significantly affected CQ. As I increases, Fo should be increased by increasing Ps and VE. Therefore, researchers should consider and specify an a priori to Fo, Ps, and I when measuring VE to examine the complex and delicate vocal mechanism.

A new ground transportation system is often simulated by the wing in ground effect(WIG). Recently, several kinds of experimental and computational studies are being carried out to investigate the WIG aerodynamic characteristics which are of practical importance to develop the new ground transportation vehicle system. These works are mainly based on conventional wind tunnel tests, but many problems associated with the WIG aerodynamic characteristics can not be satisfactorily resolved. In order to develop the new ground transportation vehicle system the WIG should be further investigated. To do this, it is necessary to develop a s imulator appropriate to the WIG aerodynamics. The objective of the present study is to clarify the aerodynamic characteristics of the WIG and to develop a new experimental test rig for the investigation of the WIG aerodynamics. Some preliminary experiments are performed to investigate the usefulness of the WIG simulator.
In this paper, aerodynamic noise characteristics of high-speed trains were deduced from the beamforming method. First, pass-by noise of high-speed trains was measured by a microphone array system. This measurement suggested that the majority of the aerodynamic noise produced came from the bogie area, the pantograph and its cover, and inter-coach gaps. Then, beampower outputs of a position in high-speed trains were obtained from the beamforming method. By Fourier transform, sound characteristics of the position in the frequency domain were deduced from the beamforming power spectrum. From this study, aerodynamic noise characteristics from the major sources of high-speed trains were drawn.

The nonlinear aerodynamic analysis of wing with control surface is performed using the frequency-domain panel method. To take into consideration the nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics of wing an iterative decambering approach is introduced. The iterative decambering approach uses the known aerodynamic characteristics of airfoil to calculate the aerodynamic characteristics of wing. The multi-dimensional Newton iteration is used to account for the coupling between the different sections of wing. The present method is verified by showing that it produces results that are in good agreement with experiments. The present method will be useful for the analysis of aircraft in the conceptual design because the present method can calculate promptly the nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics of wing with a few computing resources.
In this study aerodynamic characteristics of guided gliding type ammunition were investigated by using a computational analysis and wind tunnel test. Missile DATCOM, a semi-empirical method, and a FLUENT, a computational fluid dynamics analysis program, were used for computational analysis. For a guided gliding type ammunition, aerodynamic characteristics were investigated by calculating lift force, drag force, pitching moment and etc. Aerodynamic characteristics of guided gliding type ammunition are completely different from those of conventional ammunition. The results obtained from the computer analysis are similar to those obtained from the wind tunnel test. Although the pitch moment values obtained by the semi-empirical method were slightly different from the wind tunnel test results, the overall computer analysis results showed trends and values similar to the test results. In this study, aerodynamic characteristics of guided gliding type ammunition were identified and it found that semi-empirical method can be applied to analyze the aerodynamic characteristic in the initial design of guided gliding ammunition.
Smart UAV Development Program, one of the 21c Frontier R&D Program sponsored by MOST(Ministry of Science and Technology), was launched in 2002 As an air vehicle for the Smart UAV, CRW(Canard Rotor/wing) concept was one of the candidates compared in trade-off study. The CRW concept has not only been proven completely but its aerodynamic characteristics not known in detail yet. Two calculation methods were adopted in this study to obtain aerodynamic data for the CRW First method was the superpose DATCOM method which is capable of three lifting sufaces, and second one is the full Navier-Stokes computation around CRW configuration using overset grid method. Basic aerodynamic characteristics of the CRW configuration was analyzed and the minimum drag level with lift to drag ratio is presented. The peculiar flow characteristics around rotor/wing and hub were also examined and considered in the configuration design.

We study how the missile autopilot with three loop acceleration structure is related to the aerodynamic characteristics. First, the relationships between the response characteristics of wingless-tail controlled missile and aerodynamics are derived. Next the maximum allowable performance limit of autopilot and the design direction for a missile shape are indicated using the property of zero. The method proposed in this paper may give a help to the missile autopilot system design and determination of the shape of aerodynamic. Also, the validity of proposed method is demonstrated via numerical example.

The objective of this study is to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a vertical axis wind turbine blade as the basic study of a design of a vertical axis wind turbine. The lift and drag coefficients of the various shape of the vortical axis wind turbine blades are analyzed and compared using the CFD code Fluent. To validate the numerical analysis, the predicted results of the Fluent are compared with those of the Xfoil code and the experimental results. We conclude that the program Fluent can be used to predict the aerodynamics of the wind turbine blade. By comparing the predicted results of the aerodynamic characteristics of the different shape of the blades, an appropriate shape of the blade is suggested to design the vortical axis wind turbine blade.
