  • Mean curvature diffusion (MCD) is a selective smoothing technique that promotes smoothing within a region instead of smoothing across boundaries. By using mean curvature diffusion, noise is eliminated and edges are preserved. In this paper, we propose methods of automatic parameter selection and implementation for the MCD model coupled to min/max flow. The algorithm has been applied to high resolution aerial images and the results show that noise is eliminated and edges are preserved after removal of noise.

  • The possibility of silicon oxidation through the aerial-diffusion of active oxygen species has been evaluated. The species originate from the surface of $TiO_2$ exposed by UV. Among process parameters such as UV intensity, substrate temperature and chamber pressure with oxygen, UV intensity was a major parameter to the influence on the oxide growth rate. When 1 kW high pressure Hg lamp was used as a UV source, the growth rate of silicon oxide was 8 times as faster as that of a 60 W BLB lamp. However, as the chamber pressure increased, the growth rate was declined due to the suppression of aerial diffusion of active oxygen species. According to the results, it could be confirmed that the aerial-diffusion of active oxygen species from UV-irradiated photocatalytic surface can be applied to a new method for preparing an ultra-thin silicon oxide at the range of relatively low temperature.

  • This paper presents a modified mean curvature diffusion filter to smooth speckle noise in images. Mean curvature diffusion filter has already shown good results in reducing noise in images while preserving fine details. In the mean curvature diffusion, the rate of smoothing is controlled by the local value of the diffusion coefficient chosen to be a function of the local image gradient magnitude. In this paper, the diffusion coefficient is modified to be controlled adaptively by local image surface slope and heterogeneity. The local surface slope contributes to preserving details (e.g.edges) in image and the local surface heterogeneity helps the smoothing filter consider the amount of noise in both edge and non-edge area. The proposed filter's performance is demonstrated by quantitative experiments using speckle noised aerial image and TerraSAR-X satellite image.

  • Recently, although the need of marine robots being raised in extreme areas, the basis is very deficient. Fortunately, as the robot competition is vitalizing and the need of the robot education is increasing, it is desirable to establish the basis of the R&D and industrialization of marine robots and to train professionals through the development and diffusion of marine robot kits. However, in conventional case, there is no remotely operated aerial robot-kit based on the balloon for the marine robot competition, which has the abilities of the airborne locomotion and obstacle avoidance. To solve this problem, an aerial robot-kit which has the abilities of the airborne locomotion and remote control, is developed. To verify the performance of the developed kit, test and evaluation such as surge, yaw and pitch is performed. The test and evaluation results show that the possibility of the real applications of the developed kit.

  • The essential idea of de-noising is referring to neighboring pixels of a center pixel to be updated. Conventional adaptive de-noising filters use local statistics, i.e., mean and variance, of neighboring pixels including the center pixel. The drawback of adaptive de-noising filters is that their performance becomes low when edges are contained in neighboring pixels, while anisotropic diffusion de-noising filters remove adaptively noises and preserve edges considering intensity difference between neighboring pixel and the center pixel. The anisotropic diffusion de-noising filters, however, use only intensity difference between neighboring pixels and the center pixel, i.e., local statistics of neighboring pixels and the center pixel are not considered. We propose a new connectivity function of two adjacent pixels using statistics of neighboring pixels and apply connectivity function to diffusion coefficient. Experimental results using an aerial image corrupted by uniform and Gaussian noises showed that the proposed algorithm removed more efficiently noises than conventional diffusion filter and median filter.

  • Artemisiae Capillaris Herba is a dried aerial part of Asteraceae capillaris Thunb.(Compositae), which has been used in Korean traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. It has a variety of pharmacological activities and has been evaluated for potential as an active ingredient in cosmeceutical products. In the cosmetics industry, animal experiments is besides the major concern of ethics, there are few more disadvantages of animal experimentation like demand of skilled manpower, time consuming protocols and high cost. Therefore, various alternatives to animal experiments have been proposed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the skin permeation characteristics of chlorogenic acid and dimethyleculetin, which are constituent of Artemisiae Capillaris Herba by using Franz diffusion cell. As a result, skin permeability was characterized by flux(penetration rates) and $K_p$(permeability coefficient) value, chlorogenic acid had lower flux and $K_p$ than dimethylesculetin. According to the definitions of Marzulli, chlorogenic acid and dimethylesculetin would be classified as 'Moderate' and 'Very fast' respectively. In conclusion, skin permeation characteristics of chlorogenic acid and dimethylesculetin were confirmed through Franz diffusion cell, and suggests the direction of alternative method for skin permeation of natural compounds.

  • To investigate the current structures and diffusion characteristics in Youngil Bay, a systematic field observations of current velocity, drogue tracking, dye diffusion experiment and aerial photographing were performed. The flow patterns in the surface layer of the bay depend more strongly on the wind and ocean current than the tidal current, and the patterns in the middle are predominated by the ocean current. The residual currents in the surface generally flow toward the inner bay through the western and central areas of the bay, and then the currents go toward the ocean along the eastern shore of the bay with anti-clock-wise circulation. The residual currents in the surface of the eastern cease are not nearly influenced by the wind, and the currents always move northward to northeastward. However, the currents in the western shore depend strongly on the wind and the outflow of the Huntsman River, that is, the residual currents go northward to northeastward when the southerly to westerly winds blow or a large amount of flow from the river discharge. The residual currents in the middle layer flow toward the inner bay along the western shore of the bay, and the incomed currents go out to the ocean along the eastern shore with anticlockwise circulation. The diffusion of dye patch by the instantaneous point source shows a similar pattern to the drogue trajectory, and the apparent diffusion coefficients of the dye patch by Fick's theory is 1.14${\times}$10$^4$ cm$^2$/s. The behavior of the river discharges in flood shows a band type's effluent pattern toward the outer bay along the western coast.

  • The purposes of this paper are to present a selection method of neighboring pixels whose local statistics are similar to the center pixel and combine the selection result with mean curvature diffusion filter to reduce noises in remote sensed imagery. The order of selection of neighboring pixels is critical, especially for finding a pixel belonging to the homogeneous region, since the statistics of the homogeneous region vary according to the selection order. An effective strategy for selecting neighboring pixels, which uses rank-order differences vector obtained by computing the intensity differences between the center pixel and neighboring pixels and arranging them in ascending order, is proposed in this paper. By using region growing method, we divide the elements of the rank-ordered differences vector into two groups, homogeneous rank-ordered differences vector and outlier rank-ordered differences vector. The mean curvature diffusion filter is combined with a line process, which chooses selectively diffusion coefficient of the neighboring pixels belonging into homogeneous rank-ordered differences vector. Experimental results using an aerial image and a TerraSAR-X satellite image showed that the proposed method reduced more efficiently noises than some conventional adaptive filters using all neighboring pixels in updating the center pixel.

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are currently being used in various transport applications such as drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, and automobiles. The power required is different according to the type of use, purpose, and the conditions adjusted using a cell stack. The fuel cell stack is compressed to reduce the size and prevent fuel leakage. The unit cells that make up the cell stack are subjected to compression by clamping force, which makes geometrical changes in the porous media and it impacts on cell performance. In this study, finite elements method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for the deformed unit cell considering the effects of clamping force is performed. First, structural analysis using the FEM technique over the deformed gas diffusion layer (GDL) considering compression is carried out, and the resulting porosity changed in the GDL is calculated. The PEMFC model is then verified by a three-dimensional, two-phase fuel cell simulation applying the physical properties and geometry obtained before and after compression. The detailed simulation results showed different concentration distributions of fuel between the original and deformed geometry, resulting in the difference in the distribution of current density is represented at compressed GDL region with low oxygen concentration.
