  • In order to select the best compatibilizer for PE/asphalts mixtures, compatibilities of poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) and poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) based ionomers with asphalts were investigated via optical microscopy, thermal analysis and rheology. By comparing the polarities of ionomers through an ultimate adsorption of moisture, it was observed that the compatibilities of ionomers increase with the increases of the polarities. By rheological investigations, some of ionomer were observed to be not only compatible but also miscible with asphalts.

  • AVHRR(Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) on NOAA satellite provides data in five spectral, one in visible range, one in near infrared and three in thermal range. In this paper, application of NOAA/AVHRR data is studied for environment monitoring such as cloud top temperature, surface temperature, albedo, sea surface temperature, vegetation index, forest fire, flood, snow cover and so on. The analyses for cloud top temperature, surface temperature, albedo, sea surface temperature, vegetation index and forest fire showed reasonable agreement. But monitoring for flood and snow cover was uneasy due to the limitations such as cloud contamination, low spatial resolution. So this research had only simple purpose to identify well-defined waterbody for dynamic monitoring of flood. Based on development of these basic algorithms, we have a plan to further reseach for environment monitoring using AVHRR data.

  • To reduce the heat released during intermetallic reaction, Ni-50at%Al powder compact has been previously annealed at several conditions before the reaction. The effects of the pre-annealing conditions on the reaction synthesis process have been investigated. Experimental results show that the heat released during the reaction synthesis decreased proportionally with increase of the pre-annealing temperature and duration time. The reaction duration period was significantly increased when the intermetallics were formed in the powder compact during the pre-annealing. This was attributed to the fact that the reaction occurred by solid-state diffusion between the un-reacted elemental atoms and that the $NiAl_3$ phase formed predominantly during pre-annealing.

  • In this paper, we have studied the evolution of morphology and brazing behavior of Ag-28Cu alloy filler processed by high energy ball milling. The milling of the powder mixture was carried out for 40 h. The structural and morphological analyses were performed by the X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The melting temperature of the braze filler was determined by differential thermal analysis. The filler wetting properties were assessed from the spread area ratio measurements on various Ti substrates. The results indicate that the ball milling can effectively depress the filler melting point and enhance the brazeability. The milled powder mixture showed Ag(Cu) solid solution with a crystallite size of 174-68 nm after 40 h. It was shown that the high energy ball milling can be a potential method to develop low temperature brazing fillers for advanced microjoining applications.

  • Poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-grafted polyethylene microbeads (POPM) presenting epoxy groups were prepared by radiation-induced graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate on the polyethylene microbead. The obtained POPM was characterized by IR spectroscopic, X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermal analyses. Furthermore, the abundance of epoxy groups on the POPM was determined by titration and elemental analysis after amination. The epoxy group content was calculated to be in the range 0.29-0.34 mmol/g when using the titration method, but in the range 0.53-0.59 mmol./g when using elemental analysis (EA) after amination. The lipase was immobilized to the epoxy groups of the POPM under various experimental conditions, including changes to the pH and the epoxy group content. The activity of the lipase-immobilized POPM was in the range from 160 to 500 unit/mg-min. The activity of the lipase-immobilized POPM increased upon increasing the epoxy group content. The lipase-immobilized POPM was characterized additionally by SEM, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and EA.

  • Silicone is recently used for LED chip encapsulment due to its good thermal stability and optical transmittance. In order to predict residual stress which causes optical briefringence and mechanical warpage of silicone, finite element analysis was conducted for both curing and cooling process during silicone molding. For analysis of curing process, a cure kinetics model was derived based on the differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) test and applied to the material properties for finite element analysis. Finite element simulation result showed that the curing as well as the cooling process should be designed carefully so as to reduce the residual stress although the cooling process plays the bigger role than curing process in determining the final residual stress state. In addition, birefringence experiment was carried out in order to observe residual stress distribution. Experimental results showed that cooling-induced birefringence was larger than curing-induced birefringence.

  • One of the methods to transmit solute through solvent is diffusion. Various particles or molecules including several charged ions in the body diffuse from high density region to low density due to density difference or external electric field. This kind of mechanism is due to thermal motion of each solute molecules. These situations can be deployed using Fick's first and second laws that govern diffusion phenomena in the body. I analysis these diffusion status of material in the body using above mentioned Fick's laws and then implement them through illustration.

  • With highly oxygenated fuels the smoke emissions decreased sharply and linearly with increases in the fuel oxygen content and entirely disappeared at an oxygen content of $38wt-\%$ even at stoichiometric mixture conditions The NOx also decreased monotonically with increases in oxygen content. and thermal efficiency slightly improved because of a reduction in cooling loss and improvement in the degree of constant volume combustion. The mechanisms of the significant reductions in emissions and improvement in engine performance were analyzed with a bottom view type DI diesel engine. Together with direct flame images, flame images were taken through an optical fetter passing only two wavelengths for use in 2-D two-color analysis. The results showed that luminous flame decreased significantly with increases in oxygen content and was not detected for neat dimethoxy methane(DMM). The decrease in flame luminosity with highly oxygenated fuels corresponds with decreases in soot and cooling losses, including those due to heat radiation. The 2-D two-color flame analysis indicated that the high temperature flame and high KL factor areas apparently decreased with increasing fuel oxygen content. These results correspond strongly with decreases in NOx. smoke. and cooling loss with increases in oxygen content.

  • Thermal properties of Fe- base amorpous alloys were investigated. $Fe_{80}P_6C_{12}B_{12}$ and $Fe_{73}P_{11}C_6B_4AI_4Ge_2$ amorphous alloys were fabricated by melt spinning method and thermal analysis was done by differential scanning calorimeter. After isothermal crystallization. the Avrami exponents of $Fe_{80}P_6C_{12}B_{12}$ and $Fe_{73}P_{11}C_6B_4AI_4Ge_2$ amorphous alloys were 1.8-2.2 and 2.5-4.0, respectively. It means the former alloy shows diffusion controlled growth and the latter one shows interface controlled growth. For $Fe_{80}P_6C_{12}B_{12}$ and $Fe_{73}P_{11}C_6B_4AI_4Ge_2$ amorphous alloys. the activation energies of isothermal crystallization was 353 and 371kJlmol. Also the activation energies of nucleation and growth were 301, 324kJlmol and 273. 30lkJ/mol, respectively. Thus $Fe_{73}P_{11}C_6B_4AI_4Ge_2$ amorphous alloy is considered to be more stable than $Fe_{73}P_{11}C_6B_4AI_4Ge_2$ amorphous alloy.
