  • In high power motor drive system, the hard-switching topology produces severs switching losses and EMI noises. Also the inverter switching frequency is thus limited because of excessive loss and thermal handling problem. The primary purpose of the proposed works on the induction motor drive system is to develop an advanced soft-switching inverter topology that is most suitable for high power induction motor drive applications. To make the optimal selection EMI comparison of the switching losses presented. To verify the proposed design procedure, detailed simulation analysis with theoretical and experimental approaches have been done using laboratory prototype.

  • In this study, the failure behavior of composite material in the biaxial and off-axis loading is studied based on a computational micromechanical model. The model is developed so that the combination of mechanical and thermal loading conditions can be considered in the analysis. The modified generalized plane strain assumption of the theory of elasticity is used for formulation of the micromechanical modeling of the problem. A truly meshless method is employed to solve the governing equation and predict the distribution of micro-stresses in the selected RVE of composite. The fiber matrix interface is assumed to be perfect until the interface failure occurs. The biaxial and off-axis loading of the SiC/Ti and Kevlar/Epoxy composite is studied. The failure envelopes of SiC/Ti and Kevlar/Epoxy composite in off-axis loading, biaxial transverse-transverse and axial-transverse loading are predicted based on the micromechanical approach. Various failure criteria are considered for fiber, matrix and fiber-matrix interface. Comparison of results with the available results in the litreture shows excellent agreement with experimental studies.

  • Plate heat exchange(PHE) will be applied to the refrigeration and air conditioning systems as evaporators or condensers for their high efficiency and compactness. The purpose of this study is the analyze the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop of plate heat exchanger. Numerical work was conducted using the FLUENT code k-$\varepsilon$model. Also the dependence of heat transfer coefficient and friction factor on Reynolds number was investigated. As the Reynolds number increases, it is found that heat transfer coefficient also increases, but friction factor decreases. The study examines the internal flow, thermal distribution and the pressure distribution in the channel of plate heat exchanger. The results of CFD analysis compared with experimental data, and the difference of friction factor and Nusselt number in plate heat exchanger are 10% and 20%, respectively, Therefore the CFD analysis model is effective for the performance prediction of plate heat exchanger.

  • Recently, composites have been widely applied in the sporting goods, automobile, aerospace industry. As the use of advanced composites increase, specific techniques have been developed to repair damaged composite structures. In order to repair the damaged part, it is required that the material in the damaged area be removed first by utilizing the proper method, and prepreg be laid up in the area and cured under vacuum using the vacuum bagging materials. In curing process, either in an oven or autoclave is to be delamination can be occurred in the sound areas during and/or after the exposure to the elevated curing temperature in case that the repair process is repeated. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the degree of degradation of properties of the cured parts and how it affects to the delamination phenomenon between laminated skin and honeycomb core.

  • In the present study, a program for predicting thermal performance of an air cooled condenser is illustrated. Heat transfer equations of single phase and two phase flow are formulated into the form that is convenient to incorporate the local analysis method. The resulting equations are solved by temperature and mass correction methods. Empirical equations for both side fluids are incorporated in the caculation procedures. In order to compare the calculation results, superheat temperature of steam are varied. The tube length of superheated zone, wall temperature, temperature profile along the tube and steam qualities are predicted.

  • Three dimensional flow fields around passenger car body was computed by PAM-FLOW, well-known and validated computer program for thermal and fluid analysis. Regarding the computational method, a Navier-Stokes solver based on finite element method with various turbulent models and adaptive grid technique (H-refinement)was adopted. The results were physically reasonable and compared with experimental data, giving good agreement. It was found that three dimensional flow simulation with H-refinement technique had potential for prediction of low fie이 around vehicle and the ability to predict vortex in the wake, which is vital for CFD to be used for automobile aerodynamic calculation.

  • Liquid sodium is widely used as a coolant of LMR(Liquid Metal Reactor) because of its physical and nuclear properties. However, the liquid sodium is very chemically reactive with oxygen and water so that the study on the sodium fire plays an important role in the LMR safety analysis. In this study, a sodium fire model is suggested to analyze the sodium pool fire where both the flame and the reaction products are considered. And also, sodium pool fire analysis computer code, SOPA, is developed. The sensitivity study on the experimental parameters such as the thermal radiation from flame to atmospheric gas, the vessel cooling and the duration of sodium spill was performed. The results showed good agreements with experimental data in the literature.

  • A numerical study on the Trombe wall system, a kind of passive solar systems, has been peformed. The system is modelled as the 2-dimensional steady laminar flow with the natural convection. The PHOENICS code was employed to analyse the performance variation due to the change in the geometrical factor. The mass flow rate and the maximum temperature are changed by the variations in the width of the vents, the width between the window and the wall, and the location of the vents. And there exists the optimal condition to maximize the utilization factor. Further precise analysis has been performed to show the optimal geometry with regard to the above three factors.

  • Machine operator and quality are affected by chip during cutting process to product machine parts. This paper presents a study of the influence of cutting conditions on the surface roughness obtained by turning using Taguchi method for safety of turning operator. In the machining of titanium alloy, high cutting temperature and strong chemical affinity between the tool and the work material are generated because of its low thermal conductivity and chemical reactivity. Therefore titanium alloys are known as difficult-to materials. An orthogonal array, the signal-to-noise ratio, the analysis of variance are employed to investigate the cutting characteristics of implant material bars using tungsten carbide cutting tools of throwaway type. Also Experimental results by orthogonal array are compared with optimal condition to evaluate advanced reliability. Required simulations and experiments are performed, and the results are investigated.

  • A simplified thermal analysis method to evaluate the maximum temperature of the CANDU 37-element fuel bundle within a fuel basket in a given spent fuel dry storage canister has been presented along with the results of sample analyses performed to examine the parametric effects of the ambient conditions on the maximum fuel temperature within a canister. To solve the multi-dimensional heat transfer problem of the complex geometry of rod bundles within a canister where three modes of heat transfer are superimposed, the CANDU spent fuel bundles stored in the dry storage canister are first replaced by equivalent concentric fuel cylinders. The simplified axi-symmetric two-dimensional multi-mode heat transfer problem of the equivalent fuel cylinders is then analyzed with an existing computer code, HEATING5, using additional input data and heat transfer correlations. A comparison between the predicted temperature profile and the mock-up test results shows that the agreement is quite satisfactory.
