  • This study investigated the high temperature oxidation behavior of Ni-22.4%Fe-22%Cr-6%Al (wt.%) porous metal. Two types of open porous metals with different pore sizes of 30 PPI and 40 PPI (pore per inch) were used. A 24-hour TGA test was conducted at three different temperatures of $900^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. The results of the BET analysis revealed that the specific surface area increased as the pore size decreased from 30 PPI to 40 PPI. The oxidation resistance of porous metal decreased with decreasing pore size. As the temperature increased, the oxidation weight gain of the porous metal also increased. Porous metals mainly created oxides such as $Al_2O_3$, $Cr_2O_3$, $NiAl_2O_4$, and $NiCr_2O_4$. In the 40 PPI porous metal with small pore size and larger specific surface area, the depletion of stabilizing elements such as Al and Cr occurred more quickly during oxidation compared to the 30 PPI porous metal. Ni-Fe-Cr-Al porous metal's high-temperature oxidation micro-mechanism was also discussed.

  • This paper reports the oxidation mechanism of epitaxial Ni thin films grown on GaN/sapphire(0001) substrates, investigated by real-time x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. At the initial stage of oxidation process, a thin NiO layer with a thickness of ${\sim}50\;{\AA}$ was formed on top of the Ni films. The growth of such NiO layer was saturated and then served as a passive oxide layer for the further oxidation process. For the second oxidation stage, host Ni atoms diffused out to the surfaces of initially formed NiO layer through the defects running vertically to form NiO grains, while the sites that were occupied by host Ni, became voids. The crystallographic properties of resultant NiO films, such as grain size and mosaic distribution, rely highly on the oxidation temperatures.

  • In this study, we developed plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process for aluminum 7075 alloy to improve the corrosion and mechanical properties. The electrolyte consists of potassium hydroxide and sodium silicate. Additionally, sodium stannate was added into the electrolyte to investigate its effect on PEO film formation. Titanium was used as the counter electrode. Plasma generation voltage reduced from 300V to 150 V by adding 4 g/L of sodium stannate. The thin oxide films were observed by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy)/EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) for quantitative and qualitative analyses. XRD (X-ray diffraction) and XRF (X-ray Fluorescences) analyses were also carried out to identify oxide layer on aluminum 7075 surface. Vicker's hardness test was performed on the PEO-treated aluminum 7075 surface.

  • Graphite for the nuclear reactor is used to the moderator, reflector and supporter in which fuel rod inside of nuclear reactor. Recently, there are many researches has been performed on the various characteristics of nuclear graphite, however most of them are restricted to the structural and the mechanical properties. Therefore we focused on the thermal property of nuclear graphite. This study investigated the thermal emissivity following the oxidation degree of nuclear graphite with IG-11 used as a sample. IG-11 was oxidized to 6% and 11% in air at 5 l/min at $600^{\circ}C$. The porosity and thermal emissivity of the sample were measured using a mercury porosimeter and by an IR method, respectively. The thermal emissivity of an oxidized sample was measured at $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$. The porosity of the oxidized samples was found to increase as the oxidation degree increased. The thermal emissivity increased as the oxidation degree increased, and the thermal emissivity decreased as the measured temperature increased. It was confirmed that the thermal emissivity of oxidized IG-11 is correlated with the porosity of the sample.

  • The study presents kinetics of degradation and mineralization of an anti-epileptic drug Lamotrigine (LAM) in the aqueous matrix by electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) on Ti/DSA (Ta2O5-Ir2O5) and Stainless Steel (SS) anodes using sodium sulphate as supporting electrolyte. On both the anodes, kinetic behaviour was pseudo-first-order for degradation as well as mineralization of LAM. On Ti/DSA anode, maximum LAM degradation of 75.42% was observed at an associated specific charge of 3.1 (Ah/litre) at a current density of 1.38 mA/cm2 and 100 ppm Na2SO4 concentration. Maximum mineralization attained was 44.83% at an associated specific charge of 3.1 (Ah/litre) at a current density of 1.38 mA/cm2 and 50 ppm concentration of Na2SO4 with energy consumption of 2942.71 kWh/kgTOC. Under identical conditions on SS anode, a maximum of 98.92% LAM degradation was marked after a specific charge (Q) of 3.1 (Ah/litre) at a current density of 1.38 mA/cm2 and 100 ppm concentration of Na2SO4. Maximum LAM mineralization on SS anode was 98.53%, marked at a specific charge of 3.1 (Ah/litre) at a current density of 1.38 mA/cm2 and 75 ppm concentration of Na2SO4, with energy consumption of 1312.17 kWh/kgTOC. Higher Mineralization Current Efficiency (MCE) values were attained for EAOP on SS anode for both degradation and mineralization due to occurrence of combined electro-oxidation and electro-coagulation process in comparison to EAOP on Ti/DSA anode due to occurrence of lone electro-oxidation process.

  • Carbon-ceramic composites refer to a special class of carbon based materials which cover the main drawbacks of carbon, particularly its proneness to air oxidation, while essentially retaining its outstanding properties. In the present paper, the authors report the results of a systematic study made towards the development of C-SiC-$B_4C$ composites, which involves the effects of compositional parameters, namely, carbon-to-ceramic and ceramic-to-ceramic ratios, on the oxidation behaviour as well as other characteristics of these composites. The C-SiC-$B_4C$ composites, heat-treated to $1400^{\circ}C$, have shown that their oxidation behaviour at temperatures of 800~$1200^{\circ}C$ depends jointly on the total ceramic content and the SiC : $B_4C$ ratio. Good compositions of C-SiC-$B_4C$ composites exhibiting zero weight loss in air at temperatures of 800~$1200^{\circ}C$ for periods of 4~9 h, have been identified. Composites with these compositions undergo a weight gain or a maximum weight loss of less than 3% during the establishment of a protective layer at the surface of carbon in a period of 1~6 h. Significant improvement in the strength of C-SiC-$B_4C$ composites has been observed which increases with an increase in the total ceramic content and also with an increase in the SiC : $B_4C$ ratio.

  • For a long time, there is much interest in the superoxide anion radical as one of reactive oxygen species (ROS) not only in the basic research field of chemistry and physics but also in the life science (or biotechnology). Recently, it is becoming ever more vital since the toxic property of nanomaterials as well as advanced oxidation processes (AOP) frequently employed for controlling pollutants are connected with the formation of superoxide anion radicals. Despite many researches on superoxide anion radical, the quantitative information of its presence and its detailed reaction mechanism in aqueous environments remains largely unclear, causing the controversy and confusion. In this review paper, we attempted to summarize the physicochemical property, mechanisms, and applications of superoxide anion radical. In addition, we briefly incorporated the important application of superoxide anion radical in AOP, nanomaterials, and life science (or biotechnology).
