  • With recent advances in flexible and stretchable electronics, the development of physically responsive field-effect transistors (physi-FETs) that are easily integrated with transformable substrates may enable the omnipresence of physical sensing devices in electronic gadgets. However, physical stimuli typically induce whole sensing physi-FET devices under global influences that also cause changes in the parameters of FET transducers, such as channel mobility and dielectric capacitance that prevent proper interpretations of response in sensing materials. Extended-gate structures with isolated stimuli have been used recently in physi-FETs to demonstrate performances of sensing materials only. However, such approaches are limited to prototype researches since isolated stimuli rarely occur in real-life applications. In this report, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that integrating piezoelectric nanocomposites directly into flexible organic FETs (OFETs) as gate dielectrics provides a general research direction to physi-FETs with a simple device structure and the capability of precisely investigating functional materials. Measurements with static stimulations, which cannot be performed in conventional systems, exhibited giant-positive d33 values of nanocomposites of barium titanate (BT) NPs and poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)).

  • Polypropylene/layered silicate nanocomposites containing maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene were prepared by melt compounding and their rheological behavior was investigated in shear flow. Transient and steady shear flows were simulated numerically by using the K-BKZ integral constitutive equation along with experimentally determined damping functions under dynamic oscillatory and step strain shear flows. Nonlinear shear responses were predicted with the K-BKZ constitutive equation using two different damping functions such as the Wagner and PSM models. It was observed that PP-g-MAH compatibilized PP/layered silicate nanocomposites have stronger and earlier shear thinning and higher steady shear viscosity than pure PP resin or uncompatibilized nanocomposites at low shear rate regions. Strong damping behavior of the PP/layered silicate nanocomposite was predicted under large step shear strain and considered as a result of the strain-induced orientation of the organoclay in the shear flow. Steady shear viscosity of the pure PP and uncompatibilized nanocomposite predicted by the K-BKZ model was in good agreement with the experimental results at all shear rate regions. However, the model was inadequate to predict the steady shear viscosity of PP-g-MAH compatibilized nanocomposites quantitatively because the K-BKZ model overestimates strain-softening damping behavior for PP/layered silicate nanocomposites.

  • In this study, novel $Ag_2Se$ sensitized $TiO_2$ nanocomposites were prepared by facile sonochemical assisted synthesis method. The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2 adsorption BET analysis. The as-prepared $Ag_2Se/TiO_2$ nanocomposites simultaneously possessed great adsorptivity for organic dyes and efficient charge separation properties. In the decolorization of rhodamine B, a significant enhancement in the reaction rate was observed for the $Ag_2Se/TiO_2$ nanocomposite compared to the cases of using pure P25 or $TiO_2$. The sonocatalysis activity was higher due to the greater formation of reactive radicals, as well as to the increase of the active surface area of the $Ag_2Se/TiO_2$ nanocomposite.

  • Nanocomposites comprised of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles were synthesized by a sol-gel process. The synthesized samples were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The results show that the MgO nanoparticles, with an average diameter of 70 nm, are decorated uniformly on the surface of the GOs. By controlling the concentration of the MgO precursors and reaction cycles, it was possible to control the loading density and the size of the resulting MgO particles. Because the MgO particles are robustly anchored on the GO structure, the MgO/GOs nanocomposites will have future applications in the fields of adsorption and chemical sensing.

  • Elemental powders are used in high energy milling processes for the synthesis of new compounds. The low temperature solid state reactions during milling in inert gas atmosphere may result in intermetallic phases, carbides, nitrides or silicides with a nanocrystalline structure. To obtain dense materials from the powders a pressure assisted densification is necessary. On the other side the defect-rich microstructure can be used for activated sintering of elemental powder mixtures to obtain dense bodies by pressureless sintering. Results are discussed for nanocrystalline cermet systems and for the sintering of aluminides and silicides.

  • Carbon nanofiber (CNF)/unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) was prepared by a solvent evaporation method, and the temperature dependency of electrical conductivity was investigated. The CNF/UPR composites had quite a low percolation threshold due to CNF having a larger aspect ratio and being well dispersed in the UPR matrix. The positive temperature coefficient (PTC) was found in the CNF/UPR composites and it showed stronger effect around the percolation threshold. The electrical resistance of the CNF/UPR composites decreased and had lower temperature dependency with increasing numbers of thermal cycles.

  • In this study, the effects of carbon black (CB) content and anodic oxidation treatment with $AgNO_3$ on positive temperature coefficient (PTC) behavior of CB/HDPE nanocomposites were investigated. Also, the addition of elastomer as a toughing agent was studied. The 20~50 wt% of CB, 0~5 wtt% of elastomer, and 1 wt% of $AgNO_3$-filled HDPE nanocomposites were prepared using the internal mixer in 60 rpm at $160{\circ}C$ and the compression-molded at $180{\circ}C$ for 10 min. As a result, the room temperature resistivity and PTC intensity of the composites were dependent, to a large extent, on the content of CB, addition of elastomer, and surface chemical properties that were controlled in the relative arrangements of the carbon black aggregates in a polymeric matrix. Moreover, the composites with relatively low room temperature resistivity and suitable PTC intensity could be achieved by treatment of $AgNO_3$. Consequently, it was noted that PTC effect was due to the deagglomeration or the breakage of the conductive networks caused by thermal expansion or crystalline melting of the polymeric matrix.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted remarkable attention as reinforcement for composites owing to their outstanding mechanical properties. The CNT/Cu nanocomposite is fabricated by a novel fabrication process named molecular level process. The novel process for fabricating CNT/Cu composite powders involves suspending CNTs in a solvent by surface functionalization, mixing Cu ions with CNT suspension, drying, calcination and reduction. The molecular level process produces CNT/Cu composite powders whereby the CNTs are homogeneously implanted within Cu powders. The mechanical properties of CNT/Cu nanocomposite, consolidated by spark plasma sintering of CNT/Cu composite powders, shows about 3 times higher strength and 2 times higher Young's modulus than those of Cu matrix.

  • Our present study, we impregnated Al-Fe-Mg-Si (NFM) nanocomposites having various concentrations 0, 1000, 3000, and 5000 mg/L in biomass in order to make carbonized biomass. We characterized the properties of the impregnated samples through thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), pore distribution, scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The best results were observed for a NFM nanocomposites concentration of 5000 mg/L. After the first heat treatment, carbonization, and activation processes, the fixed carbon ratio and iodine adsorptivity were increased by 21.89% and 368 mg/g, 23.98% and 475 mg/g, 26.40% and 238 mg/g, respectively. The remove rate of malodorous and VOCs were that the sample shows good removal capabilities. From above results, our sample could be used for the removal of noxious and malodorous gases and for the purification of wastewater.

  • Epoxy/S2-glass reinforced composites (SGRPs) infused with Cloisite 30B nanoclays were manufactured using the vacuum assisted resin infusion molding (VARIM) process. Prior to infusion, the matrix and clays were thoroughly mixed using a direct mixing technique (DMT) and a high shear mixing technique (HSMT) to ensure uniform dispersion of the nanoclays. Structures with varying clay contents (1-3 wt%) were manufactured. Both pristine and SGRP nanocomposites were then subjected to mechanical testing. For the specimens manufactured by DMT, the tensile, flexural, and compressive modulus increased with increasing the clay content. Similarly, the tensile, flexural, compressive, interlaminate shear and impact strength increased with the addition of 1 wt% clay: however the trend reversed with further increase in the clay content. Specimens manufactured by HSMT showed superior properties compared to those of nanocomposites containing 1 wt% clay produced by DMT. In order to understand these phenomena a morphological study was conducted. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs revealed that HSMT led to better dispersion and changed the nanoclay structure from orderly intercalation to disorderly intercalation giving multi-directional strength.
