Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the relationship between aggression, self-esteem, and social withdrawal. Methods: This research is a cross-sectional survey. This study used the 5th-year data of the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) including 218 middle school students having delinquent behavior. The collected data was analyzed through $x^2$ test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression, using SPSS/Win (ver. 23.0). Results: Significant positive correlations were found between aggression and social withdrawal and between aggression and self-esteem. Higher aggression was associated with higher social withdrawal and lower self-esteem. The results of the 2-step regression are as follows. Aggression was negatively correlated with self-esteem, whereas self-esteem was positively correlated with social withdrawals. The hierarchical multiple regression showed that 21% of the variance of aggression was significantly accounted for by self-esteem and social withdrawal. The most significant factor influencing aggression was social withdrawal. Conclusion: These results suggest that earlier screening and intervention programs to increase self-esteem and decrease social withdrawal for early adolescents should be developed to prevent aggression.
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine factors influencing changes in the self-esteem of multicultural adolescents over time. Methods: A longitudinal design was adopted to analyze secondary data. This study used the 2nd, 4th, and 6th year data of Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS) collected by the Korea Youth Policy Institute. The linear mixed model was utilized to analyze self-esteem changes over time. Results: The factors of sex and age of the students, the mother's Korean writing ability, and the Filipino or Japanese mothers had a significant effect on the self-esteem change of multi-cultural adolescents over time. Specifically, it was found that female students' self-esteem was decreased by 0.04 (t=-2.39, p=.017) more than male students over time. As the subject's age and mother's Korean writing ability increased, self-esteem was decreased by 0.01 (t=-2.53, p=.011) and 0.03 (t=-2.52, p=.012) over time. In addition, compared to that of those who had mothers from Korea, self-esteem of those who had Filipino or Japanese mothers was decreased by 0.04 significantly. Conclusion: Therefore, when developing a self-esteem promotion program, it is necessary to develop content by reflecting the characteristics of mothers as well as the gender and age of students. Furthermore, the significance of this study is in that it established a foundation for a positive self-identity of multicultural adolescents whose number is increasing recently by identifying factors affecting their self-esteem.
This research is to find structural relationships among psychological anxiety, appearance-oriented attitude, and self-esteem of youth and investigates how the structural relationships show by genders and different school classes. For the investigation, a collected data for the research of 'adolescent's misbehaviors and tendency of their young average age and political subject' were used from SPSS 22.0 program and AMOS 22 statistical program provided by Korea youth and children's data archive. First of all, the research determines as the psychological anxiety gets higher, youth have lower self-esteem level and more behavior problems. In addition, when adolescents show stronger appearance-oriented attitude they have higher self-esteem level and more behavior problem. The study also indicates that as youths have higher self-esteem their behavior problem levels are reduced. Secondly, by examining the relationships of youth's psychological anxiety and appearance-oriented attitude based on their self-esteem, the self-esteem gives a positive mediated effect on psychological anxiety and behavior problem whereas the self-esteem affects as negative mediated effect on the appearance-oriented attitude and behavior problem. Lastly, the study indicates there is a causal interaction between youth's appearance-oriented attitude and behavior problem which differs by genders and different school classes. Based on the results of the research, the theoretical and practical applications were suggested to prevent and relax the adolescent's behavior problems.

As multicultural family gradually increased, our society is changing towards multicultural society. This study tried to identify the factors related with social distance of adolescent of multicultural family. The participants were 568 middle school students living in S city, D and H county in Chungnam province. Data for the study were analyzed by frequency, mean comparison, correlation and regression analysis. The study results were summarized as follows. First, there were significant differences in social distance according to gender, school record, and place of residence. Second, there were significant differences in social distance according to degree of intimacy between general adolescents. Third, as a result of correlation analysis, the lower self-esteem was, the lower value orientation was, the lower cultural diversity was; the higher social distance is. Accordingly, social distance for adolescents had negative correlations with self-esteem, value orientation, and cultural diversity. Fourth, variables affecting social distance were gender, school record, family composition, place of residence, friend from multicultural family, intention to be a friend, experience of overseas travel, self-esteem, value orientation, cultural diversity. Among them, intention to be a friend was a main predictor.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of self-differentiation, self-esteem and school adjustment among adolescents. Methods: The data were collected from 508 adolescents and analyzed using n (%), t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression with the SPSS 16.0program. Results: First, School adjustment was different for grade, gender, level of mother's education, and economics level. Second, Subjects of self-differentiation was the average score 102 points, self-esteem average score 27.3 points and school adjustment average score 63.6 points.. Third, Self-differentiation and self-esteem had a significant positive correlation with school adjustment. Fourth, Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that family regression, emotional cutoff, recognition emotional function and family projection in self-differentiation, self-esteem and gender(female), level of mother's education(above university), and grade(high) explained 46.5% of the total variance in school adjustment. Conclusion: Self-differentiation and self-esteem were confirmed as having an influence on school adjustment. We need to develop a nursing intervention program that can manage adolescent's school adjustment. When providing such programs, the family must be included.
The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between self-esteem and mental health in Middle school students, and provided basic data to develop a nursing program for the prevention of mental disease and the promotion of mental health in adolescence. Subjects were 153 students in the third year of three middle schools located in K city. Instruments used in this study were the self-esteem questionnaire developed by Choi, B. K. & Jun, G. Y.(1993) and the simplified SCL-90 developed by Lee, H. K.(1986) for measuring mental health. Data were analyzed by Cronbach's alpha, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient by using SPSS/PC+ program. It was found that the mean score of the self-esteem was 3.20. The score of self-esteem in family was high and the score of self-esteem in school was low. The mean score of mental health was 1.94. The scores of depression, obsessive-compulsive and interpersonal sensitivity were high, the scores of phobic anxiety and somatization were low. There were significant differences among religions (F=2.709, p= .032), and between personalities (t=-2.285, p= .024) with respect to self esteem. There were no significant differences between general characteristics variables and mental health. However there was significant negative correlation between the mean self-esteem score and the mean mental health score (r=-.431, p= .000). In conclusion, mental health is strongly related to self-esteem. If and adolescent who suffers from mental health is not received proper treatment, his or her mental health prohibits him from managing sound social life even after grown-up. Thus, nursing intervention in adolescence should be developed to enhance the self-esteem of adolescence and to help him raise sound mind.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among self-esteem, meaning in life, and spiritual well-being in middle school students. Methods: The research design was a descriptive correlational survey involving 405 middle school students in grades 1 to 3 in S city, K city, and C city. Data were collected from March to May 2008 using questionnaires. Means with standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan post-hoc test, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data. Results: According to general characteristics of the students, there were statistically significant differences in self-esteem for gender, grade, and region, in meaning in life, there were significant differences for grade, gender, and region, and in spiritual well-being, there were statistically significant differences for gender, religion, and region. There were significant correlations between self-esteem and meaning in life, between self-esteem and spiritual well-being, and between meaning in life and spiritual well-being. Conclusion: Self-esteem, meaning in life, and spiritual well-being should be considered as important factors for healthy development in the middle school period. These three variables should be considered as the main content for self-development programs for middle school students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating mediation effect of self-esteem on the relations among adolescents' abuse experiences, depression and anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Methods: The participants were selected using secondary data from a population in the 2012 Korea Welfare Panel Survey (KOWEPS). Data were analyzed using SPSS 15.0 and SPSS Macro, and bootstrapping and hierarchical regression analysis were performed to analyze multilevel models. Results: First, analysis of the mediating effect of the adolescents' abuse showed that there was significant mediating influence between suicidal ideation and depression and anxiety. Second, hierarchical regression analysis showed that self-esteem had significant mediation effect on depression and anxiety in adolescents' suicidal ideation. Third, SPSS Macro showed that self-esteem also significantly moderated the mediating effect of adolescents' abuse experiences on suicidal ideation through depression and anxiety. Conclusion: The study results suggest that in future research on adolescent's abuse experience, the risk of suicide in depression and anxiety scores should be selected through evaluation of each individual's self-esteem scale. Coping strategies with immediate early intervention should be suggested.
The current study examined the relationships between the adolescent's conflict resolution style and Big-Five personality factors, self-monitoring and self-esteem. Firstly, results showed that adolescent's big-five personality model affects their conflict resolution styles with their friends and peer group. In detail, the higher the neuroticism was, the stronger became the attack and avoidance strategies. The higher the extraversion was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the attack and avoidance strategies. The higher the agreeableness was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the attack strategy. The higher the conscientiousness was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the avoidance strategy. The higher the openness to experience was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the avoidance strategy. The higher the self-esteem was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the avoidance and attack strategies. The higher the self-monitoring was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the avoidance strategy. Secondly, the big-five personality factors also affected the adolescent's conflict resolution styles. The extraversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness positively affected the collaborative strategy. The neuroticism was positively related with the attack strategy, whereas agreeableness was negatively affected the attack strategy. The neuroticism and agreeableness were positively related with the avoidance strategy, whereas the extraversion was negatively affected the avoidance strategy. Limitations and suggestions for future study were discussed thereafter.
The purpose of this study is to verify the moderating effect of self-esteem between emotional trauma and internet smart phone addiction of adolescents. For this purpose, this study confirmed moderating effect by setting emotional trauma as predicting variable, self-esteem as moderating variable and internet smart phone addiction as dependent variable. The study conducted a questionnaire survey on 645 middle school students regarding emotional trauma, self-esteem and internet smart phone addiction. The results of this study are as follows; first, emotional trauma had negative correlation with self-esteem and positive correlation with internet smart phone addiction. Self-esteem had negative correlation with internet smart phone addiction. Second, as the result of hierarchical regression analysis, there was an interaction effect of emotional trauma and self-esteem on internet smart phone addiction. The meaning of this study are as follows; first, it is proved that one of the causes of internet smart phone addiction is adolescent's emotional trauma and, second, it is proved that the intervention of self-esteem is required to reduce the negative effect of adolescent's emotional trauma. That is, it turned out that self-esteem moderated the relationship between emotional trauma and internet smart phone addiction.
