  • Despite the availability of drugs effective in producing a bacteriological cure, tuberculosis presents continuing problems in its control, especially in the developing world. An effective immunotherapy to be used with chemotherapy is urgently required. Intradermal injection of a suspenison of killed Mycobacterium vaccae switches off the tissue-necrotizing component of the Koch phenomenon, and promotes cell-mediated responses to the common, putative protective, mycobacterial antigens. These properties led to the empolyment of the suspension in immunotherapy as an adjunct to chemotherapy in the treatment of both tuberculosis and leprosy. The evidence leading to these conclusions is reviewed.

  • This paper discloses a striking similarity between Korean/Japanese wh-NPs and Italian QPs: both categories are disallowed from LD-movement out of weak islands. This leads us to a substantial claim that wh-phrases in the former languages possibly belong to a non-D-linked category, parallel to the Italian QPs. This claim is also supported by semantic evidence: that is, in-situ wh-NPs in these languages lack covert partitivity (Kyungnam University)

  • Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a new non-invasive, mobile screening method which does not use ionizing radiation to the human breast. It is based on the theory that cancer cells display altered local dielectric properties, thus demonstrating measurably higher conductivity values. This article reviews the utilisation of EIT in breast cancer detection. It could be used as an adjunct to mammography and ultrasonography for breast cancer screening.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between nominal markers and scrambling in Korean by providing proper LP constraints based on Cho &Chai (2000) anc Cho & Choe(2001). In doing so, we introduce a new type marker which includes case, postpositions and delimiters and propose the Adjunct LP Constraint and the Argument LP Constraint. Our LP constraints presents a solution to the problems of the previous analyses such as Kuno's (1980) Crossing-Over Constraint. The newly postulated type marker enables us to account for the scrambling possibilities of the NPs containing cases as well as postpositions and delimiters.

  • Recently, oral appliances for treating snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are widely used. Among various appliances, mandibular advancement devices are most effective without serious side effects. Advancement of mandible keep airway open and decrease snoring and/or obstructive apnea events. They can be used as stand-alone therapy or an adjunct to continuous positive air pressure for lowering air pressure. Oral appliances should be applied by dentists who have knowledges and experiences on occlusion and temporomandibular disorders and manage of side effects.

  • So-called multiple nominative constructions (MNCs) in Korean are quite theoretically as well as computationally puzzling. This paper shows that a grammar allowing the interaction of declarative constraints on types of signs - in particular, constructions (phrases and clauses)-can provide a robust and efficient way of encoding generalizations for two different MNCs. The feasibility of the grammar developed has been checked with its implementation into the LKB (Linguistic Knowledge Building) system.

  • Retrograde cerebral perfusion under hypothermic circulatory arrest is a simple and useful adjunct to avoid cerebral ischemic injury in the treatment of aortic arch pathology. In the surgery of distal aortic arch and proximal descending aortic lesions through the left thoracotomy incision, right atrium-retrograde cerebral perfusion (RA-RCP) through a venous cannula positioned into the right atrium is simpler than retrograde cerebral perfusion through superior vena cava. The time limits for RA-RCP during aortic arch reconstruction have yet to be clarified. We, herein, present a case with uneventful recovery after RA-RCP of 94 minutes during reconstruction of aortic arch and descending aorta. These data suggest that RA-RCP, as an adjunct to hypothermic circulatory arrest, may prolong the circulatory arrest time and thus prevent ischemic injury of the brain, even when RA-RCP exceeds 90 minutes.
