PURPOSE. To evaluate the metameric disparities among monolithic zirconia materials with differing yttrium compositions across various lighting conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty-six square-shaped zirconia samples measuring 10 × 10 × 0.5 mm were prepared from monolithic zirconia materials with three different yttrium contents. A 0.2 mm thick layer of polymerized dual-polymerizable self-adhesive resin cement was created using a silicone mold with the same dimensions as the prepared zirconia specimens. To evaluate metamerism, color measurements were conducted using a spectrophotometer device on a neutral gray background in a color measurement cabinet that offers four different illumination environments. All samples underwent aging by subjecting them to 10000 thermal cycles using a thermal cycle tester. Following thermal aging, color measurements were taken once more, and the data were recorded using the CIE L*, a*, b* color system. Two-way ANOVA and Post-hoc Bonferroni tests were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS. It was observed that there was no statistical difference among the color measurements made in different illumination environments of the monolithic zirconia ceramics used to evaluate metamerism (P > .05). This observation remained consistent both before and after thermal aging. After thermal aging, the color of monolithic zirconia materials exhibited a tendency towards red and yellow hues, accompanied by a decrease in brightness levels. CONCLUSION. It can be stated that different illumination conditions did not affect the metamerism of monolithic zirconia materials, but there was a color change in monolithic zirconia materials after a thermal aging period equivalent to one year.

The high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) thermal spray is a kind of surface modification techniques to produce the sprayed coating layer. This process is to form the coating layer after spraying the powder to molten or semi-molten state by the ultra-high speed at the high-temperature heat source and conflicting with a substrate. The efficiency of thermal spraying is dropped, however, because the semi-molten powder in a spray process become a factor that degrades the mechanical property by the formed pore within the coating layer. Therefore, it is necessary to melt completely the thermal spray powder in order to produce the coating layer with an optimal adhesive force. In this study, to improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and heat resistance, the plungers of high-speed and ultra-high pressure reciprocating hydraulic pumps used in ironworks are manufactured with STS $420J_2$ and are coated by the powders of WC-Co-Cr and WC-Cr-Ni including the WC of high hardness using a HVOF thermal sprayer developed in this laboratory. These are called by the surface-modified plungers. The surface roughness, hardness, and surface and cross-sectional microstructure of these two surface-modified and conventional ceramic plungers are measured and compared before operation with after operation for 100 days. It is found that the values of centerline average surface roughness and maximum height for conventional ceramic plunger are 9.5 to 10.8 and 5.2 to 5.7 times higher than those of surface-modified ones coated by WC-Co-Cr and WC-Cr-Ni because the fine tops and bottoms on surface roughness curve of conventional ceramic plunger are approximately 100 times higher than those of surface-modified ones. In addition, the pores and scratches in the surface microstructure are considerably formed in the order of conventional ceramic, WC-Cr-Ni and WC-Co-Cr surface-modified plungers. The greater the WC content of high hardness powder is less the change in the plunger surface.

The aircraft composites wing parts are usually integrated with adhesive or fastener. These laminated composites have weak interlaminar strength, which can lead to delamination. In order to compensate the disadvantages of laminated composites, it is possible to improve the strength, durability, shock and fatigue resistance by reinforcing the fiber in the thickness direction. In addition, using a single structure near-net-shape saves the manufacturing time and the number of fasteners, thus can reduce the overall cost of the composite parts. In this study, compression test, tensile test and open-hole tensile test are carried out for three structural architecture of 3D (three-dimensional) textile preforms: orthogonal(ORT), layer-to-layer(LTL) and through-the-thickness(TTT) patterns. Among these, the orthogonal textile composite shows the highest Young's modulus and strength in tensile and compression. The notch sensitivity of the orthogonal textile composite was the smallest as compared with UD (unidirectional) and 2D (two-dimensional) fabric laminates.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) belong to an ideal material for field emitters because of their superior electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties together with unique geometric features. Several applications of CNTs to field emitters have been demonstrated in electron emission devices such as field emission display (FED), backlight unit (BLU), X-ray source, etc. In this study, we fabricated a CNT cathode by using filtration processes. First, an aqueous CNT solution was prepared by ultrasonically dispersing purified single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) in deionized water with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The aqueous CNT solution in a milliliter or even several tens of micro-litters was filtered by an alumina membrane through the vacuum filtration, and an ultra-thin CNT film was formed onto the alumina membrane. Thereafter, the alumina membrane was solvated by acetone, and the floating CNT film was easily transferred to indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrate in an area defined as 1 cm with a film mask. The CNT film was subjected to an activation process with an adhesive roller, erecting the CNTs up to serve as electron emitters. In order to measure their luminance characteristics, an ITO-coated glass substrate having phosphor was employed as an anode plate. Our field emitter array (FEA) was fairly transparent unlike conventional FEAs, which enabled light to emit not only through the anode frontside but also through the cathode backside, where luminace on the cathode backside was higher than that on the anode frontside. Futhermore, we added a reflecting metal layer to cathode or anode side to enhance the luminance of light passing through the other side. In one case, the metal layer was formed onto the bottom face of the cathode substrate and reflected the light back so that light passed only through the anode substrate. In the other case, the reflecting layer coated on the anode substrate made all light go only through the cathode substrate. Among the two cases, the latter showed higher luminance than the former. This study will discuss the morphologies and field emission characteristics of CNT emitters according to the experimental parameters in fabricating the lamps emitting light on the both sides or only on the either side.
Thin bonded continuously reinforced concrete overlay(CRCO) was constructed on He existing jointed plain concrete pavement(HCP) surface at Seo-Hae-Ahn express highway in South Korea in order to evaluate its applicability and performance. Two sections of road were considered for this evaluation. In the first section, the concrete overlayer was placed and cut down to the existing layer to form transverse joints while CRCO was constructed on top of the existing layer in the second section. Early strength concrete(Type III) was utilized for both overlay sections. The depth of milling and the thickness of overlaid layer were 5 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Several vibrating wire gauges(VWG) were installed to evaluate the performance of CRCO with respect to curling, delamination, and crack propagation. As a result of the strength test, it was found that strength of the material reaches the design criteria within 1-3 days. Analysis with vibrating wire gauge(VWG) showed CRCO effectively restricts joint movement. High adhesive strength also was observed from the material regardless of length of aging. Meanwhile, transverse cracks were observed on the middle of the section where JPCP overlay was applied whereas arbitrarily cracks in transverse direction were observed on the section where CRCP was applied.

The majority of the described experimental results deal with relatively pure aluminium. Variations were made in the pretreatment of the aluminum substrates and an investigation was performed on the resulting changes in oxide layer composition and chemistry. Subsequently, the bonding behavior of the surfaces was investigated by using model adhesion molecules. These molecules were chosen to represent the bonding functionality of an organic polymer. They were applied onto the pretreated surfaces as a monolayer and the bonding behavior was studied using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. A direct and clear relation was found between the hydroxyl fraction on the oxide surfaces and the amount of molecules that subsequently bonded to the surface. Moreover, it was found that most bonds between the oxide surface and organic functional groups are not stable in the presence of water. The best performance was obtained using molecules, which are capable of chemisorption with the oxide surface. Finally, it was found that freshly prepared relatively pure aluminum substrates, which are left in air, rapidly lose their bonding capacity towards organic functional groups. This can be attributed to the adsorption of contamination and water to the oxide surface. In addition the adhesion of a typical epoxy-coated aluminum system was investigated during exposure to water at different temperatures. The coating was found to quite rapidly lose its adhesion upon exposure to water. This rapid loss of adhesion corresponds well with the data where it was demonstrated that the studied epoxy coating only bonds through physisorptive hydrogen bonding, these bonds not being stable in the presence of water. After the initial loss the adhesion of the coating was however found to recover again and even exceeded the adhesion prior to exposure. The improvement could be ascribed to the growth of a thin oxyhydroxide layer on the aluminum substrate, which forms a new, water-stable and stronger bond with the epoxy coating. Two routes for improvement of adhesion are finally decribed including an interphasial polymeric thin layer and a treatment in boiling water of the substrate before coating takes place. The adhesion properties were finely also studied as a function of the Mg content of the alloys. It was shown that an enrichment of Mg in the oxide could take place when Mg containing alloys are heat-treated. It is expected that for these alloys the (hydr)oxide fraction also depends on the pre-treatment and on the distribution of magnesium as compared to the aluminium hydroxides, with a direct impact on adhesive properties.
This research was carried out to investigate the development of fire-retardancy treatment technology and performance evaluation of fire-retardant treated plywoods. Radiata pine, keruing, dillenia, calophyllum and terminalia veneers were treated by normal(conventional) pressure soak(NPS) and vacuum-pressure-soak(VPS) using 20% water solution of diammonium phosphate. Then, 4.8mm thick, 3ply plywoods were fabricated with combination of fire-retardant treated, untreated or water-immersion types and several composition types of radiata pine and keruing veneers, i,e. the uniform and the mixed types in species composition, and the homogenious and the alternate layer types in veneer treatment. In composed species, the retention and the treatment effects of fire-retardant chemicals III radiata pine was still greater than those of keruing. The effect of VPS treatment was larger than that of NPS treatment, however, adhesive bonding strength and bending strength of plywoods treated by these two methods were not necessarily lowered, compared to those of untreated plywood. And also, fire endurance performance of the urea melamine resin-bonded plywood was greater than that of the phenol resin-bonded plywood. In result, the appropriate combination in veneer species and layer as well as alternate fire-retardant treatments would be more efficiently available in service.

This study is on development of UV-cured anti-stain coating compounds which have more improved anti-stain function to prevent a surface of PVC tile from stain. To make an anti-stain coating composition, water soluble antistatic agent made from ammonium(IV) salt, antistatic agents for acrylic and polyurethane were used. Their contents varied from 5 to 20wt% against quantities of resin in coating composition. After coating PVC tiles using bar-coating method that can adjust a thickness, we estimated surface properties of coated layer such as anti-stain, electric resistance, adhesive power, thickness of coating, and so on. Results showed that a coating composition added 15wt% of water soluble antistatic agent and coated with No.12 bar-coater had the optimum surface property in electric resistance($3.24{\times}10^9{\Omega}/cm^2$), anti-stain(ink Test, Dust Test) and adhesive power. We could also find electric resistance and anti-stain effect were improved as antistatic agent content increased. However, excessive addition of antistatic agents(over 20wt%) caused the migration.
The changes of microstructures, morphology of sclerotic dentin and bonding aspects generated by an adhesive resin was investigated. Incisors and premolars showing natural cervical abrasions were collected and conditioned with 10 % phosphoric acid or 10 % maleic acid. The sclerotic dentin specimens were then rinsed and blot-dried and applied with dentin adhesive (All Bond 2) to the conditioned dentin surface. To examine the morphologic change of the sclerotic dentin specimen after etching and bonding procedure, the treated specimens were examined by SEM. To analyze the chemical composition of sclerotic dentin and crystals occluding dentinal tubules, the sclerotic dentin specimen was powdered and examined with X-ray Diffractometer. To investigate the Ca/P weight percent ratio within the dentinal tubules, the sclerotic dentin specimen was fractured perpendicularly to the long axis of the tooth from the center of cervical abrasion lesion and then examined with EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray) microanalyzer. The results were as follows : 1. The increased width of peritubular dentin and the depositions of the irregular amorphous materials within the dentinal tubules were showed in the sclerotic dentin specimens. 2. After the treatment of sclerotic dentin specimen with 10 % phosphoric acid or 10 % maleic acid, the lateral side of tubules rather than cross-sectional tubule openings was showed exclusively at the incisal and gingival incline of the specimens. 3. After the treatment of sclerotic dentin specimen with 10 % phosphoric acid or 10 % maleic acid, the hybrid layer was not formed evidently and the resin tag was not formed or shortly penetrated into the tubules with the thinner diameter. 4. According to the results of XRD analysis of the sclerotic dentin specimen, Hydroxyapatite and Octacalcium phosphate were predominent, however, Whitlockite crystals were rare. 5. The mean Ca/P weight percent ratio analysed from 5 fractured sclerotic dentin specimens was $2.322{\pm}0.170$ at the intertubular dentin, $1.826{\pm}0.051$ within the dentinal tubule.

In this study, the changes in the degree of conversion (DC) and the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) of self-etching adhesives to dentin was investigated according to the time after curing. The MTBS of Single Bond (SB, 3M ESPE, USA), Clearfil SE Bond (SE, Kuraray, Japan), Xeno-III (XIII, Dentsply, Germany), and Adper Prompt (AP, 3M ESPE, USA) were measured at 48h, at 1 week and after thermocycling for 5,000 cycles between 5$^{\circ}$C and 55$^{\circ}$C. The DC of the adhesives were measured immediately, at 48h and at 7 days after curing using a Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectrometer. The fractured surfaces were also evaluated with scanning electron microscope. The MTBS and DC were significantly increased with time and there was an interaction between the variables of time and material (MTBS, 2-way ANOVA, p = 0.018; DC, Repeated Measures ANOVA, p < 0.001). The low DC was suggested as a cause of the low MTBS of self-etching adhesives, XIII and AP, but the increase in the MTBS of SE and AP after 48h could not be related with the changes in the DC. The microscopic maturation of the adhesive layer might be considered as the cause of increasing bond strength.
