  • A strategy for a torque ripple reduction drive of single-phase SRM with high power factor is proposed. The drive for switched reluctance motor (SRM) is presented to achieve sinusoidal, near unity power factor input current with low torque ripple. The proposed SRM drive has no additional active switch. And a single-stage approach, which combines a DC link capacitor used as dc source and a drive used for driving the motor into one power stage, has a simple structure and low cost. The characteristics and validity of the proposed circuit is discussed in depth through the experimental results.

  • It is well known that line switching operations like reclosing are able to cause transient power oscillations which can stress or damage turbine generators. This paper presents a reclosing scheme to reduce the shaft torsional torques of turbine generators by inserting an additional reactor. A novel method to determine optimal reactor capacity to minimize the torsional torque generated in a turbine generator is also proposed. In this paper, the turbine generator shaft is represented by a multi-mass model to measure torsional torques generated in the shaft between the turbine and the generator. Transmission systems based on actual data from Korea are modeled to verify the proposed scheme using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) software. The simulation results clearly show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and torsional torque can be minimized by applying the proposed scheme.

  • The switched reluctance motor has high efficiency over a wide range of speed and torque. However the switched reluctance motor exhibit comparatively low efficiency in the chopped excitation which produces additional inverter losses. This paper examines the optimal efficiency operation using choppingless excitation under the changed supply voltage. The excitation is designed to produce the required torque and speed satisfying the optimal efficiency in a nonlinear switched reluctance motor. The optimal algorithm is applied to 119 operation points which are chosen over the full range of driving torque and speed. The result in this paper indicate the improved efficiency comparing to the efficiency obtained by both switched and chopped excitataions under a fixed supply voltage.

  • This paper proposes a torque assist strategy for operating a hybrid agricultural tractor in the field. In general, different field operations such as baling and rotary tillage require different patterns and amounts of torque. Thus, a large agricultural tractor is used to improve the farming efficiency. Therefore, this research has the goal of developing a hybrid tractor that uses a small electric motor to provide additional torque for specific field operations. To achieve this objective, a rule-based torque assist strategy is proposed and validated for a simulation model in the Autonomie framework, which is a commercial simulation tool. Finally, the work efficiencies and fuel consumptions of a conventional tractor and the hybrid tractor with the proposed torque assist strategy are compared using simulations.

  • Drag torque reduction in a wet clutch pack is a key aspect of the design process of the dual clutch transmission (DCT) system. In order to reduce the drag torque caused by lubricant shear resistance, recently developed wet clutch pack systems of DCT, as well as automatic transmission and other four-wheel drive (4WD) couplings, frequently utilize wavy wet clutch pads. Therefore, wavy shape of friction pad are made on the groove patterns like waffle pattern for the reduction of drag torque. Additionally, the groove patterns are designed with larger channels at several locations on the friction pad to facilitate faster outflow of lubricant. However, channel performance is a function of the waviness of the friction pad at the location of the particular channel. This is because the discharge sectional area varies according to the waviness amplitude at the location of the particular channel. The higher location of the additional channel on the friction pad results in a larger cross-sectional area, which allows for a larger flow discharge rate. This results in reduction of the drag torque caused by the shear resistance of DCTF, because of marginal volume fraction of fluid (VOF) in the space between the friction pad and separator. This study computes the VOF in the space between the friction pad and separator, the hydrodynamic pressure developed, and the shear resistance of friction torque, by using CFD software (FLUENT). In addition, the study investigates the dependence of these parameters on the location and waviness amplitude of the channel pattern on the friction pad. The paper presents design guidelines on the proper location of high waviness amplitude on wavy friction pads.

  • This paper propose a improved direct torque control(DTC) system for improving operation of five-phase squirrel-cage induction motor(IM). A five-phase IM drives present unique characteristics due to the additional degrees of freedom and also drives possess many others advantage compared with the traditional three-phase motor drive system, such as reducing a amplitude of torque pulsation and increasing the reliability. In order to maximize the torque per ampere, the proposed motor has concentrated windings and the produced back-electromotive force(EMF) is almost trapezoidal, and the motor is supplied with the combined sinusoidal plus third harmonic of currents, there is necessary to controlled 3rd harmonic current. Also a DTC method is advantageous when it is applied to the five-phase IM, because the five-phase inverter provides 32 space vectors in comparison to 8 space voltage vectors into the three-phase inverter drive system. For presenting the superior performance of the proposed DTC, experimental results of speed control are presented using a 32-bit fixed point TMS320F2812 DSP with 1.5[hp] IM.

  • The introduction of the eddy current braking(ECB) system in HSRT(high speed railway train) is known to be advantageous, in that the system is independent on wheel-rail adhesion coefficient which is greatly affected by weather condition. It also minimize the maintenance of the brake system and does not require any additional electric energy because it is powered form the regenerated power at the time of the braking. In this study, the braking and attraction forces of the ECB are simulated by 2-D FEM and are experimentally verified on a down-scaled prototype. A control algorithm of the ECB is proposed to generate constant braking torque using linear variation of the reference current according to speed. Experimental results shows that the constant torque is generated over all operating speed region by developed control algorithm.

  • An automatic transmission of automobiles enables comfortable driving experience with lower transmission shifting jerks. However, the assembly structure is more complicated and requires additional components with lower efficiency than the manual transmission system. Extensive research has been conducted to improve the overall transmission efficiency by optimizing each component of the automatic transmission assembly. This study focuses on enhancing the friction torque of double angular contact ball bearings used in automatic transmission. The friction torque of the bearing varies with the operating conditions such as the operational load and rotating speed. Since reducing the friction torque of the bearing tends to deteriorate the durability of the bearing, it is necessary to design the bearing having a minimum required friction torque by determining the durability life of an automatic transmission assembly, In this study, the theoretical life and friction torque of conventional and newly-developed bearings are calculated. The difference in the friction torque between the new and existing bearings are also evaluated.

  • Statement of problem: Loosening or fracture of the abutment screw is one of the common problems related to the dental implant. Generally, in order to make the screw joint stable, the preload generated by tightening torque needs to be increased within the elastic limit of the screw. However, additional tensile forces can produce the plastic deformation of abutment screw when functional loads are superimposed on preload stresses, and they can elicit loosening or fracture of the abutment screw. Therefore, it is necessary to find the optimum tightening torque that maximizes a fatigue life and simultaneously offer a reasonable degree of protection against loosening. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to present the influence of tightening torque on the implant-abutment screw joint stability with the 3 dimensional finite element analysis. Material and methods: In this study, the finite element model of the implant system with external butt joint connection was designed and verified by comparison with additional theoretical and experimental results. Four different amount of tightening torques(10, 20, 30 and 40 Ncm) and the external loading(250 N, $30^{\circ}$) were applied to the model, and the equivalent stress distributions and the gap distances were calculated according to each tightening torque and the result was analyzed. Results: Within the limitation of this study, the following results were drawn; 1) There was the proportional relation between the tightening torque and the preload. 2) In case of applying only the tightening torque, the maximum stress was found at the screw neck. 3) The maximum stress was also shown at the screw neck under the external loading condition. However in case of applying 10 Ncm tightening torque, it was found at the undersurface of the screw head. 4) The joint opening was observed under the external loading in case of applying 10 Ncm and 20 Ncm of tightening torque. 5) When the tightening torque was applied at 40 Ncm, under the external loading the maximum stress exceeded the allowable stress value of the titanium alloy. Conclusion: Implant abutment screw must have a proper tightening torque that will be able to maintain joint stability of fixture and abutment.
