  • Yakkong germinated for 48 h at $23^{\circ}C$(48G), which showed the highest isoflavone content, was prepared with no heat treatment(48G-NH) or with additional heat treatment entailing 20 min boiling(48G-20B) or 15 min roasting(48G-15R). After being ground, each powder was substituted for rice flour by 10, 20, or 30% in rice cookies and compare with the control(100% rice flour cookies). The rice cookies containing 20 or 30% 48G-NH showed the highest crispness in texture and the lowest spreadability. The rice cookies containing 48G-20B and 48G-15R did not show a change in spreadibility, regardless of substitution level. For the rice cookies with 48G-15R, when the substitution level increased to 30%, the crispness decreased and hardness increased. The rice cookies with 48G-20B showed the lowest crispness regardless of substitution level. In terms of color, rice cookies substituted with Yakkong powder showed lower L and higher a* values than the control, however there were no tendencies related to b* value change. In sensory testing, rice cookies substituted with YK-48G had an improved quality, especially in flavor and texture as well as in function. The most acceptable substitution level was 20% of 48G-15R.

  • The microstructure of a high-carbon and high-chromium cast steel (HK700) for cold-work die inserts was analyzed by advanced scanning electron microscopy. A continuous network of primary $M_7C_3$ carbide was developed among austenitic matrix after casting. A small amount of $M_2C$ was added to the carbide network owing to the enrichment of Mo and W during the solidification. After quenching in which the austenitization was performed at $1030^{\circ}C$ and double tempering at $520^{\circ}C$, the network structure of $M_7C_3$ was preserved while most of the matrix was transformed to martensite because of additional carbide precipitation. The $M_2C$ in the as-cast microstructure was also transformed to $M_6C$ due to its instability. The continuous network of coarse carbides owing to the absence of hot-working had little influence on the hardness after quenching and tempering, whereas it resulted in severe brittleness upon flexural loading.

  • Mechanical alloying technique was applied to prepare hard magnetic $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x$ compound powders. Staring from pure Fe and Sm powders, the formation process of hard magnetic $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x$ phase by mechanical alloying and subsequent solid state reaction was studied. As milled powders were found to consist of Sm-Fe amorphous and $\alpha$-Fe phases in all compositions of $Sm_xFe_{100-x}$(x = 11, 13, 15, 17). The effects of starting composition on the formation of $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ intermetallic compound was investigated by heat treatment of mechanically-alloyed powders. When Sm content was 15 at.%, heat-treated powders consisted of nearly $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ single phase. For preparation of hard magnetic $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x$ powders, additional nitriding treatment was performed under $N_2$ gas flow at 45$0^{\circ}C$. The increase in the coercivity and remanence was proportional to the nitrogen content which increased drastically at first and then increased gradually as the nitriding time was extended to 3 hours.

  • Kkonmoe relic located in Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do Provinceis an example of the wide chronology from the Three Kingdoms Period to Joseon Dynasty. Examinations on a forged iron ax, a cast iron ax and an iron sickle excavated from this relic revealed the microstructure structure of the metal and the manufacturing technologies. Microstructure investigation was carried out with a metallurgical microscope and a Vickers hardness tester was used to measure the hardness of the micro structures. The test results show that the forged iron ax has a ferrite and pearlitestructure. It is made of low carbon steel and then carbonized to increase carbon content. After carbonization, the surface grains are reworked and the surface decarbonized. In case of the iron sickle, it is forged from low carbon steel, then carbonized and hardened, to increase overall strength. The sickle blade is carbonized and quenched after forging, resulting in afirm, solid blade. Heat treatment to remove brittleness is not applied to the cast ironartifact, which is manufactured by solidifing hypo-eutectic cast iron with a3-4% carbon content and white cast iron. All artifacts are produced from steel and subjected to a carbonization process. To increase hardness of the blade, additional heat treatment is applied.

  • For improvement of the wear performance of Ti alloy, vacuum-carburizing technique was tried for the first time using propane atmosphere. During the low pressure carburizing carbide was formed at the surface and carbon transfer was occurred from the carbide to the matrix. It was found that: (i) surface hardness increased with the reduction of operating pressure and time; (ii) optimum hardness distribution could be obtained with the proper choice of temperature and carbon flux control; and, (iii) case depth was largely influenced not by time but by temperature. The two steps process was recommended for obtaining thick case depth and high surface hardness of Ti alloy. For the low oxygen partial pressure, it was necessary to introduce additional CO gas to the atmosphere.Grain boundary oxidation and non-uniformity could be prevented.

  • Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) is a metastable form of amorphous carbon that have superior material properties such as high mechanical hardness, chemical inertness, abrasion resistance, and biocompatibility. Furthermore, its material properties can be tuned by additional doping such as nitrogen or boron. However, either pure DLC or doped DLC show poor adhesion property that makes it difficult to apply contact processing technique. Therefore we propose ultrafast laser micromachining which is non-contact precision process without mechanical degradation. In this study, we developed precision machining process of DLC thin film using an ultrafast laser by investigating the process window in terms of laser fluence and laser wavelength. We have also demonstrated various patterns on the film without generating any microcracks and debris.

  • An Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS), which penetrates and sabotages the target by physical energy, consists of a general penetrator using Depleted Uranium (DU) or Tungsten Heavy Alloy (THA) but THA is preferable because of manufacturing and environmental issues. On a THA penetrator, the penetration performance is determined mainly by self-sharpening depending on the hardness and toughness of materials. In particular, the tensile strength and impact strength work as key factors. The correlation coefficient for the penetration performance of the tensile strength was 0.721 and the impact strength was -0.599. The improved penetration performance by additional heat treatment was proven experimentally. Therefore, maintaining elongation over 9 % and tensile strength over 123 kg/㎟ is desirable, and the impact strength should be less than 6.8 kg·m/㎠ for good penetration performance.

  • Fe-TiC composite powder was fabricated via two steps. The first step was a high-energy milling of FeO and carbon powders followed by heat treatment for reduction to obtain a (Fe+C) powder mixture. The optimal condition for high-energy milling was 500 rpm for 1h, which had been determined by a series of preliminary experiment. Reduction heat-treatment was carried out at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1h in flowing argon gas atmosphere. Reduced powder mixture was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and Laser Particle Size Analyser (LPSA). The second step was a high-energy milling of (Fe+C) powder mixture and additional $TiH_2$ powder, and subsequent in-situ synthesis of TiC particulate in Fe matrix through a reaction of carbon and Ti. High-energy milling was carried out at 500 rpm for 1 h. Heat treatment for reaction synthesis was carried out at $1000{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in flowing argon gas atmosphere. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results of the fabricated Fe-TiC composite powder showed that only TiC and Fe phases exist. Results from FE-SEM observation and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectros-copy (EDS) revealed that TiC phase exists uniformly dispersed in the Fe matrix in a form of particulate with a size of submicron.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the healing response of various Hydroxyapatite(HA) coated dental implants by Ion-Beam Assisted Deposition(IBAD) placed in the surgically created circumferential gap in dogs. Materials and methods: In four mongrel dogs, all mandibular premolars and the first molar were extracted. After an 8 weeks healing period, six submerged type implants were placed and the circumferential cylindrical 2mm coronal defects around the implants were made surgically with customized step drills. Groups were divided into six groups : anodized surface, anodized surface with 150nm HA and heat treatment, anodized surface with 300nm HA and heat treatment, anodized surface with 150nm HA and no heat treatment, and anodized surface with 150nm HA, heat treatment and bone graft, anodized surface with bone graft. The dogs were sacrificed following 12 weeks healing period. Specimens were analyzed histologically and histomorphometrically. Results: During the healing period, healing was uneventful and implants were well maintained. Anodized surface with HA coating and $430^{\circ}C$ heat treatment showed an improved regenerative characteristics. Most of the gaps were filled with newly regenerated bone. The implant surface was covered with bone layer as base for intensive bone formation and remodeling. In case that graft the alloplastic material to the gaps, most of the coronal gaps were filled with newly formed bone and remaining graft particles. The bone-implant contact and bone density parameters showed similar results with the histological findings. The bone graft group presented the best bone-implant contact value which had statistical significance. Conclusion: Within the scope of this study, nano-scale HA coated dental implants appeared to have significant effect on the development of new bone formation. And additional bone graft is an effective method in overcoming the gaps around the implants.

  • Rehabilitation treatments after orthopedic surgery promote postoperative healing in humans. In veterinary medicine, there is increased interest in rehabilitation treatments because they are potentially beneficial to animals in the post-operation period. This study examined the effectiveness of rehabilitation treatment in dogs that underwent orthopedic surgeries, including femoral head & neck ostectomy (FHNO) and medial patellar luxation treatment (MPLT). The group that received the rehabilitation treatment after FHNO (1.88 weeks) showed a significantly shorter recovery length of 6.62 weeks compared to those that did not receive the treatment (8.50 weeks). The other group that received the rehabilitation treatment after MPLT (4.38 weeks) showed a significantly shorter recovery length of 5.01 weeks compared to those that did not receive the treatment (9.39 weeks). For the qualitative evaluation, the types and frequencies of rehabilitation treatments were monitored. The rehabilitation programs used frequently were heat therapy, laser therapy, passive range of motion, exercise therapy, and aquatic therapy. A standard rehabilitation program after hindlimb surgery was suggested based on the quantitative and qualitative investigation. The results add additional evidence that showed the beneficial effects of rehabilitation treatments in dogs.
