  • Various amount of NbC carbide was intentionally formed in a matrix-type cold-work tool steel by controlled amount of Nb and C addition. And the effect of NbC addition on the mechanical properties was investigated. Four alloys with different Nb and C contents were cast by vacuum induction melting, then hot forging and spheroidizing annealing were conducted. The machinability of the annealed specimens was examined with 3 different cutting tools. And tensile tests at room temperature were conducted. After quenching and tempering, hardness and impact toughness were measured, while wear resistance was evaluated by disk-on-plate type wear test. The increasing amount of NbC addition resulted in degraded machinability with increased strength, whereas the absence of NbC also led to poor machinability due to high toughness. After quenching and tempering, the additional NbC improved wear resistance with increasing hardness, whereas it deteriorated impact toughness. Therefore, it could be found that a moderate addition of NbC was desirable for the balanced combination of mechanical properties.

  • In order to investigate the effect of plastic deformation and annealing process parameters on strength and electrical conductivity of Cu-Fe alloys, Cu-10wt%Fe, Cu-15wt%Fe alloys were drawn up to ${\eta}=4$ and annealed in the temperature range of $300^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$, followed by measurements of tensile strength and electric conductivity. As draw strain increases, tensile strength increases while electrical conductivity decreases. These observations result from reduction of dislocation density and decrease in Fe fiber spacing. Raising annealing temperature brought about decrease of tensile strength and increase of electrical conductivity up to $500^{\circ}C$, being followed by decreasing above $500^{\circ}C$. Such results are thought to be caused by decrease of dislocation density below $500^{\circ}C$ and rapid solubility increase of Fe in Cu above $500^{\circ}C$. For the purpose of obtaining both high strength and high conductivity, annealing process should be incorporated just prior to reaching to final draw strain. For Cu-10wt%Fe alloy, the tensile strength 706.9 MPa and the electrical conductivity 54.34%IACS were obtained through the processes of drawing up to ${\eta}=3$, annealing at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and additional drawing up to total strain of ${\eta}=4$.

  • There is an increasing interest in manufacturing various electronic devices on a bendable substrate. In this paper, we observed a surface morphology by annealing for 20 minutes at temperatures of 150 ℃, 350 ℃, and 550 ℃, respectively, with samples coated by chromium and aluminum. Data on surfaces are investigated using high-resolution SEM and AFM that can measure roughness up to nm. There is no difference from the sample without heat treatment up to 350 ℃, but the change of crystal grains can be observed at 550 ℃. In the future, for application to the flexible optoelectronic field, additional characteristics such as electrical conductivity and reflectivity will be analyzed and optical devices will be manufactured. In conclusion, we will explore the possibility of applying metal materials to flexible electronic devices.

  • A feeding trial was conducted to determine whether dietary vitamin C (200 mg/kg) and vitamin E (250 mg/kg) prevent any drops in egg shell quality under heat stress in broiler breeder hens. One hundred and sixty molted Ross broiler breeders were housed randomly in an individual cage at 83 weeks of age. Four dietary treatments with forty hens and four replications per treatment were control (no additional vitamins). vitamin C-. or vitamin E-supplemented. and combined supplementation of the two vitamins. After a ten-day-adaptation period at 25 $^{\circ}C$. the ambient temperature was kept at 32 $^{\circ}C$ for a three-week-testing period. Egg production dropped dramatically over week but it did not show a significant change among treatments (P<0.05). However. egg weight. SG. shell thickness. SWUSA. puncture force and shell breaking strength of the birds fed the diet with the combined vitamins C and E were significantly improved than those fed the basal diet during the heat stress period (P<0.05). The hens fed the vitamin C supplemented diet showed a tibia breaking strength of 37.16 kg statistically higher than those of the basal and the vitamin E supplemented groups (P<0.05). The hens fed the basal diet showed higher serum corticosterone levels. a mean of 5.97 ng/ml. than those of the rest of treatments (P<0.05). The heat stress elevated heterophils but decreased lymphocytes in serum. and it changed H/L ratios of all the treatments. The increases in H/L ratios were alleviated in the bird by feeding vitamin C and/or vitamin E supplemented diets. but they did not differ significantly (P<0.05). In conclusion. vitamins C (200 mg/kg) and/or E (250 mg/kg) supplementation to diets could prevent drops in egg shell quality and tibia bone strength by alleviating stressful effects from high temperature in broiler breeder hens.

  • This study examines the degradation of PTT BCF and fading behavior of disperse dye by heat treatment and UV irradiation. The behavior in strength degradation of PTT BCF after treat treatment was examined by measuring the tensile strength of samples. The strength retention of PTT BCF rapidly decreased with increasing exposure time at 150℃. The K/S value decreased with increasing temperature and its trend accelerated with increasing exposure time on heat. The behavior on strength degradation of PTT BCF and the fading of disperse dye on it were studied under UV irradiation at various temperatures. The tensile strength of PTT BCF and the K/S value of the sample dyed with disperse dye after UV irradiation decreased with increasing temperature and exposure time. PTT BCF exposed under UV irradiation exhibited lower strength and K/S value compared with the sample after heat treatment. Additional study on the effects of additives used to improve the resistance to fading of disperse dye and degradation of PTT BCF revealed that antioxidant and UV absorbent in PTT BCF showed a small improvement in the strength degradation of PTT BCF and the fading of dye.

  • The coconut shell based activated carbon was applied for EDLC (electric double layer capacitor) electrode with the post treatments. The electrochemical properties were evaluated with a coin cell using the activated carbon as electrode. The initial gravimetric and volumetric capacitance of the coconut shell based activated carbon electrode s were 66 F/g and 39 F/cc, and these values decreased to 54 F/g and 32 F/cc after 100 cycles, respectively showing 82% of charge-discharge efficiency. The properties of CV graph with the commercial activated carbon electrodes showed the serious polarization as the result of additional reaction between electrolyte and impurities of the electrode materials. In order to remove impurities efficiently, the commercial activated carbon was treated by alkali and acid solutions consecutively, and then heat treated to control the pore size distribution and the content of surface functional groups. The surface functional groups decreased with the increased heat temperature and the specific capacitance increased with the decreased surface functional groups. The initial capacitance of coconut shell based activated carbon elec trode which was treated with NaOH and HNO3, and then heat treated at $800^{\circ}C$ was 44 F/cc, and the value turned out to be 42 F/cc after 100 cycles, showing over 95% of charge-discharge efficiency.

  • Recent evidence has shown that methionine (Met) supplementation can improve milk protein synthesis under hyperthermia (which reduces milk production). To explore the mechanism by which milk protein synthesis is affected by Met supplementation under hyperthermia, mammary alveolar (MAC-T) cells were incubated at a hyperthermic temperature of 42℃ for 6 h in media with different concentrations of Met. While the control group (CON) contained a normal amino acid concentration profile (60 ㎍/mL of Met), the three treatment groups were supplemented with Met at concentrations of 10 ㎍/mL (MET70, 70 ㎍/mL of Met), 20 ㎍/mL (MET80, 80 ㎍/mL of Met), and 30 ㎍/mL (MET90,90 ㎍/mL of Met). Our results show that additional Met supplementation increases the mRNA and protein levels of BCL2 (B-cell lymphoma-2, an anti-apoptosis agent), and decreases the mRNA and protein levels of BAX (Bcl-2-associated X protein, a pro-apoptosis agent), especially at an additional supplementary concentration of 20 ㎍/mL (group Met80). Supplementation with higher concentrations of Met decreased the mRNA levels of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9, and increased protein levels of heat shock protein (HSP70). The total protein levels of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) and the mTOR signalling pathway-related proteins, AKT, ribosomal protein S6 kinase B1 (RPS6KB1), and ribosomal protein S6 (RPS6), increased with increasing Met supplementation, and peaked at 80 ㎍/mL Met (group Met80). In addition, we also found that additional Met supplementation upregulated the gene expression of αS1-casein (CSN1S1), β-casein (CSN2), and the amino acid transporter genes SLC38A2, SLC38A3 which are known to be mTOR targets. Additional Met supplementation, however, had no effect on the gene expression of κ-casein (CSN3) and solute carrier family 34 member 2 (SLC34A2). Our results suggest that additional Met supplementation with 20 ㎍/mL may promote the synthesis of milk proteins in bovine mammary epithelial cells under hyperthermia by inhibiting apoptosis, activating the AKT-mTOR-RPS6KB1 signalling pathway, and regulating the entry of amino acids into these cells.

  • The zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic material is a material in which lithium silicate glass contains about 10% by weight of zirconia oxide (zirconia oxide). This material has both the advantages of glass ceramics and zirconia, and it is attracting attention as a CADCAM material for single tooth restoration. ZLS materials have improved strength compared to widely used e.max (lithium disilicate ceramic) materials. It can be used for single crown restoration and ensuring a thickness of 1.5 mm is very important for reliable treatment. In the case of Celtra Duo, heat treatment may be helpful in terms of strength and abrasion resistance. Hydrofluoric acid treatment is helpful for bonding and hydrofluoric acid for a short time may not help to improve the bonding strength. Although zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic materials have been continuously conducted and published in the laboratory, reliable clinical studies are still lacking. Additional clinical studies will be a very important part of establishing a scientific basis.

  • Hyperthermia (HT) in combination with anticancer drugs (ACDs) had proven to more efficacious in various cancers, although efficacies vary according to chemotherapeutic compounds and cancer types. Presently there are few data that compares anticancer efficacies among ACDs under hyperthermic conditions. Therefore, we selected three commonly used ACDs (quercetin, verapamil and doxorubicin) and compared their antitumor effects when each was treated with 43$^{\circ}C$ HT exposure. Firstly, FM3A, a murine breast cancer cell line, was treated with each ACD for 1 h followed by 43$^{\circ}C$ exposure for additional 1 h, and examined the effects of: 1) each drug, 2) 43$^{\circ}C$ HT exposure, and 3) the combination of each drug and 43$^{\circ}C$ HT exposure for 1, 6 and 24 h. The determined overall effects on FM3A cells were arrested cell proliferation, clonogenic efficiency and apoptosis. Pre-treatment of FM3A cells to each ACD followed by 43$^{\circ}C$ HT exposure produced greater antitumor effects including suppressed cell proliferation, reduced clonogenic efficiency and increased apoptotic cell death, compared to ACD treatment or HT exposure alone. Apoptotic cell death occurred in a time-dependent manner. Among the ACDs, antitumor efficacies varied in the order of doxorubicin > verapamil > quercetin. It was concluded that heat exposure during ACD treatment of caner cells may be an important factor to get a better antitumor benefit, even though this benefit may differ from one drug to another.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the differences between clinical and quantitative sensory testing (QST) results among persistent idiopathic dentoalveolar pain (PIDP), inflammatory dental pain, and control group subjects to identify discriminative clinical features for differential diagnosis. Methods: Thirty-three patients (5 PIDP-a without surgical procedures 10 PIDP-b with surgical procedures, 8 dental pain patients, and 10 controls) were evaluated for clinical features and QST results. Cold pain threshold, heat pain threshold, mechanical pain threshold (MPT), mechanical pain sensitivity, and pressure pain threshold (PPT) were performed. Psychological factors were assessed using Symptom Checklist-90-Revision (SCL-90-R) and a chart review was conducted to evaluate additional discriminative clinical features such as pain quality and treatment prognosis. Results: The dental pain group had lower PPT than the PIDP-b and the control group. The PIDP-a group showed higher MPT and PPT than the PIDP-b and dental pain group but the difference was not statistically significant. Differences in SCL-90-R SOM (Somatization), O-C (obsessive-compulsive), ANX (anxiety), and PSY (Psychoticism) values were statistically significant among groups. PIDP-a and PIDP-b groups showed remaining symptoms after treatment and the pain tended to spread widely, whereas, in toothache patients, symptoms disappeared after treatment. However, factors that confound the diagnosis, such as an increase in pain during chewing and a decrease in the pain threshold at the affected site, could also be identified. Conclusions: PIDP and dental pain groups have distinct clinical symptoms, but there are also factors that cause confusing in diagnosis. Therefore, various clinical examination results should be carefully reviewed and comprehensively evaluated in the differential diagnosis process.
