It rains heavily, such as long rain and typhoons, during a typical rainy season in Korea. In this season, several fuel contamination accidents by water and vehicular problems caused by water contaminated fuel occur. Many research groups have studied the effects of water contaminated fuel on vehicles and environment. However the characteristics of water contaminated fuel have not been studied. In this study, we prepared diesel samples with a constant ratio of water (0~30 volume %) using an emulsifier. Then, we analyzed these diesel samples for their representative fuel properties. In the analytical results, diesel with 30% water showed an increase in fuel properties such as density (823→883 kg/㎥), kinematic viscosity (2.601→6.345 ㎟/s), flash point (47→56℃), pour point (-22→2℃), CFPP (cold filter plugging point) (-17→20℃) and copper corrosion number (1a→2a). The low temperature characteristics, such as low pour point and CFPP, blocks the fuel filter in the cold season. In addition, water contaminated diesel decreases lubricity (190→410 ㎛) under high frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) and derived cetane number (54.81→34.25). The low lubricity of fuel causes vehicle problem such as pump and injector damage owing to severe friction. In addition, the low cetane diesel fuel increases exhaust gases such as NOx and particulate matters (PM) owing to incomplete combustion. This study can be used to identify the problems caused by water contamination to vehicle and fuel facilities.
Over 30% of domestic soil contamination has occurred via petroleum products and complex oil. Moreover, contamination by complex oil is more intense than it is by a single petroleum product species. In this study, we analyzed sectional TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) pattern and sectional ratio of current domestically distributed petroleum products, such as kerosene, diesel, bunker C, and lubricant and complex oils, to determine pollution characteristics of the soil. In the TPH pattern, kerosene, which is a light distillate, had an early retention time, and lubricant oil, which is a heavy distillate, had a late retention time in the gas chromatogram. In addition, we obtained a complexly contaminated soil via diesel and lubricant oil from the Navy and inspected it for its ratio of complex oil species. The inspection results showed that this soil was contaminated with 85% diesel and 15% lubricant oil. The method developed in this study could be used to determine complex petroleum sources and ratios at sites with accidentally contaminated soil.

Bioremediation is often used for in situ remediation of petroleum-contaminated site. We studied the microbial degradation of hydrocarbon in an artificially diesel contaminated soil in laboratory microcosm. In control soil, about 30% of the initial TPH was diminished and the degradation of diesel oil was significantly enhanced by the addition of bioremediation agent (70% of TPH reduction).
Cetane number of diesel fuel for compression ignition engine is one of main properties for fuel ignition quality. Recently the cetane index has been replaced the cetane number in order to resolve the disadvantage of CFR engine test, but these two value have slightly difference values due to addition of various additives. In this study, we analyzed the cetane number, derived cetane number and cetane index for diesel fuel which was blended with various ratios of biodiesel, kerosene and cetane improver as additives. As a result, Cetane number showed the similar value with derived cetane number, but cetane index showed quite different value with cetane number when biodiesel and cetane improver were used as additives.

The esterification of the reactants of Jatropha oil and methanol added by propyleneglycol was done using p-TSA catalyst. And then the emulsification of triglyceride and methanol was conduced by 1.0vol% GMS. The emulsified reactants were transesterified at $65^{\circ}C$ using TMAH and mixed catalyst (50wt%-TMAH+50wt%-NaOH) respectively. The esterification conversion at the 1:8 molar ratio of free fatty acid to methanol using 8.0wt% p-TSA was 94.7% within 80min. The overall conversion at the 1:8 molar ratio of mixed fat(50wt% Beef Tallow) to methanol and $65^{\circ}C$ using mixed catalyst was 95.4% The cloud point of Biodiesel decreased with the addition of petroleum diesel.

Petroleum products are composed of various types of hydrocarbon compounds. Like other types of liquids, they presented the variation of density and volume according to temperature change. The method of measuring the density of petroleum products in a liquid phase is based on experimental data obtained mainly for each fractionally distilled petroleum product. In this study, the density and volume changes of kerosene and automotive diesel according to temperature change were measured and the property of change were analyzed. The conversion values were calculated using the density volume conversion table proposed by international standard ASTM. In addition, we analyzed the differences between the reference values and the measured values for the temperature changes specified in the domestic metering law.
GTL (gas-to-liquid) fuel produced by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen ($H_2$) is expected to be one of the environmental friendly biomass based alternatives and blended to petrodiesel. In this study, the characteristic of the fuel was analyzed by its concentration differences after blending petrodiesel in domestic market with different amounts of GTL fuel which produced from Shell. Gas chromatography shows that GTL fuel consists of longer paraffin chain than common diesel. GTL fuel showed a high flash point, distillation, kinematic viscosity, and derived cetane number. In addition, GTL fuel showed lower lubricity due to low sulfur content.

Microalgae are aquatic microorganisms capable of photosynthetic growth using water, carbon dioxide and sunlight, and can replace petroleum for transportation. It is receiving great attention as a potential next-generation biological resource. The microalgae biodiesel production process is largely based on the development of highly efficient strains and mass production. It consists of cultivation, harvesting, oil extraction, fuel conversion and by-product utilization. Currently, microalgae diesel is 3-5 times more expensive than petroleum diesel. However, with the optimization of each element technology and the development of integrated systems, not only biofuels, but also industrial materials, wastewater treatment, and greenhouse gases As application expands to various fields such as abatement, the timing of commercialization may be brought forward. Oil prices have recently fallen due to the influence of sail gas. Although there has been a significant drop, global warming is an urgent challenge for current and future generations. In particular, Korea, which does not have oil resources, We must always prepare for political environmental changes, high oil prices, and energy crises. In this paper, the need for eco-friendly biofuel for carbon dioxide conversion. In addition to research trends, domestic and international research trends, and economic prospects, the concept of microalgae and the element technologies of the biodiesel production process are briefly discussed introduced.
Petroleum-contaminated soil is considered among the most important potential anthropogenic atmospheric methane sources. Additionally, various rhizoremediation factors can affect methane emissions by altering soil ecosystem carbon cycles. Nonetheless, greenhouse gas emissions from soil have not been given due importance as a potentially relevant parameter in rhizoremediation techniques. Therefore, in this study we sought to investigate the effects of different plant and soil amendments on both remediation efficiencies and methane emission characteristics in diesel-contaminated soil. An indoor pot experiment consisting of three plant treatments (control, maize, tall fescue) and two soil amendments (chemical nutrient, compost) was performed for 95 days. Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal efficiency, dehydrogenase activity, and alkB (i.e., an alkane compound-degrading enzyme) gene abundance were the highest in the tall fescue and maize soil system amended with compost. Compost addition enhanced both the overall remediation efficiencies, as well as pmoA (i.e., a methane-oxidizing enzyme) gene abundance in soils. Moreover, the potential methane emission of diesel-contaminated soil was relatively low when maize was introduced to the soil system. After microbial community analysis, various TPH-degrading microorganisms (Nocardioides, Marinobacter, Immitisolibacter, Acinetobacter, Kocuria, Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas, Alcanivorax) and methane-oxidizing microorganisms (Methylocapsa, Methylosarcina) were observed in the rhizosphere soil. The effects of major rhizoremediation factors on soil remediation efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions discussed herein are expected to contribute to the development of sustainable biological remediation technologies in response to global climate change.
The cells obtained from diesel contaminated site were tested for diesel degradation by culturing them on the culture medium that contained diesel as the only carbon source. Two strains that grew well in the culture media were separated: one formed white colony and another strain formed yellow colony. When they were cultured together, much higher diesel degradation was obtained compares to that of individual cell culture. Mixed culture of white and yellow colony forming strains grew well with 1%(v/v) diesel and the addition of growth nutrients increased the diesel degradation. Additional nitrogen source was efficient for higher diesel degradation (over 90%) when it was compared with that without nitrogen source. When mixed culture of white and yellow colony forming cells were applied to the soil column system contaminated by diesel, 30 mL/min of air flow rate was found to be sufficient to degrade diesel oil. The diesel degradation did not increase noticeably at higher flow rate. The addition of nitrogen source resulted in the increase in diesel degradability.
