  • In this paper, we design a versatle RS decoder which can decode RS codes of any block length n as well as any message length k, based on a modified Euclid's algorithm (MEA). This unique feature is favorable for a shortened RS code of any block length it eliminates the need to insert zeros before decoding a shortened RS code. Furthermore, the value of error correcting capability t can be changed in real time at every codeword block. Thus, when a return channel is available, the error correcting capability can be adaptiverly altered according to channel state. The decoder permits 4-step pipelined processing : (1) syndrome calculation (2) MEA block (3) error magnitude calculation (4) decoder failure check. Each step is designed to form a structure suitable for decoding a RS code with varying block length. A new architecture is proposed for a MEA block in step (2) and an architecture of outputting in reversed order is employed for a polynomial evaluation in step (3). To maintain to throughput rate with less circuitry, the MEA block uses not only a multiplexing and recursive technique but also an overclocking technique. The adaptive RS decoder over GF($2^8$) with the maximal error correcting capability of 10 has been designed in VHDL, and successfully synthesized in a FPGA.

  • This paper proposed a watermark embedding/extracting method using CABAC(Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding) which is the entropy encoder for the main profile of MPEG-4 Part 10 H.264/AVC. This algorithm selects the blocks and the coefficients in a block on the bases of the contexts extracted from the relationship to the adjacent blocks and coefficients. A watermark bit is embedded without any modification of coefficient or with replacing the LSB(Least Significant Bit) of the coefficient with a watermark bit by considering both the absolute value of the selected coefficient and the watermark bit. Therefore, it makes it hard for an attacker to find out the watermarked locations. By selecting a few coefficients near the DC coefficient according to the contexts, this algorithm satisfies the robustness requirement. From the results from experiments with various kinds and various strengths of attacks the maximum error ratio of the extracted watermark was 5.02% in maximum, which makes certain that the proposed algorithm has very high level of robustness. Because it embeds the watermark during the context modeling and binarization process of CABAC, the additional amount of calculation for locating and selecting the coefficients to embed watermark is very small. Consequently, it is highly expected that it is very useful in the application area that the video must be compressed right after acquisition.

  • A conventional max SNR scheme, which allocates uplink resources to the user with the highest gain of desired signal channel with a serving base station (BS), exhibits excellent performance in low interference environments. On the other hand, max SGIR scheme, which allocates resources by considering both the desired signal chanel gain and users' interference generating to neighboring BSs, outperforms the max SNR in high interference environments. The conventional two scheduling schemes exhibit optimal performance in different interference environments. Thus, we propose an adaptive scheduling scheme in order to overcome disadvantages of the conventional schemes. In the proposed scheme, a user is selected by max SNR and then the user's generating interference is compared with a pre-determined threshold value. If the generating interference is larger than a pre-determined threshold, then a user is re-selected by max SGIR policy. Monte-Carlo simulation results reveals that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional schemes in various interference environments.

  • The SharkHartmann wavefront sensors are the most popular devices to measure wavefront in the field of adaptive optics. The Shack-Hartmann sensors measure the centroids of spot irradiance distribution formed by each corresponding micro-lens. The centroids are linearly proportional to the local mean slopes of the wavefront defined within the corresponding sub-aperture. The wavefront is then reconstructed from the evaluated local mean slopes. The uncertainty of the Shack-Hartmann sensor is caused by various factors including the detector noise, the limited size of the detector, the magnitude and profile of spot irradiance distribution, etc. This paper investigates the noise propagation in two major centroid evaluation algorithms through computer simulation; 1st order moments of the irradiance algorithms i.e. center of gravity algorithm, and correlation algorithm. First, the center of gravity algorithm is shown to have relatively large dependence on the magnitudes of noises and the shape & size of irradiance sidelobes, whose effects are also shown to be minimized by optimal thresholding. Second, the correlation algorithm is shown to be robust over those effects, while its measurement accuracy is vulnerable to the size variation of the reference spot. The investigation is finally confirmed by experimental measurements of defocus wavefront aberrations using a Shack-Hartmann sensor using those two algorithms.

  • For optimal image quality of computer tomography angiography (CTA), different iodine concentrations and scan parameters were applied to quantitatively evaluate the image quality characteristics of filtered back projection (FBP), hybrid-iterative reconstruction (hybrid-IR), and deep learning reconstruction (DLR). A 320-row-detector CT scanner scanned a phantom with various iodine concentrations (1.2, 2.9, 4.9, 6.9, 10.4, 14.3, 18.4, and 25.9 mg/mL) located at the edge of a cylindrical water phantom with a diameter of 19 cm. Data obtained using each reconstruction technique was analyzed through noise, coefficient of variation (COV), and root mean square error (RMSE). As the iodine concentration increased, the CT number value increased, but the noise change did not show any special characteristics. COV decreased with increasing iodine concentration for FBP, adaptive iterative dose reduction (AIDR) 3D, and advanced intelligent clear-IQ engine (AiCE) at various tube voltages and tube currents. In addition, when the iodine concentration was low, there was a slight difference in COV between the reconstitution techniques, but there was little difference as the iodine concentration increased. AiCE showed the characteristic that RMSE decreased as the iodine concentration increased but rather increased after a specific concentration (4.9 mg/mL). Therefore, the user will have to consider the characteristics of scan parameters such as tube current and tube voltage as well as iodine concentration according to the reconstruction technique for optimal CTA image acquisition.

  • Purpose To assess the effect of deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) for head CT in pediatric patients. Materials and Methods We collected 126 pediatric head CT images, which were reconstructed using filtered back projection, iterative reconstruction using adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASiR)-V, and all three levels of DLIR (TrueFidelity; GE Healthcare). Each image set group was divided into four subgroups according to the patients' ages. Clinical and dose-related data were reviewed. Quantitative parameters, including the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and qualitative parameters, including noise, gray matter-white matter (GM-WM) differentiation, sharpness, artifact, acceptability, and unfamiliar texture change were evaluated and compared. Results The SNR and CNR of each level in each age group increased among strength levels of DLIR. High-level DLIR showed a significantly improved SNR and CNR (p < 0.05). Sequential reduction of noise, improvement of GM-WM differentiation, and improvement of sharpness was noted among strength levels of DLIR. Those of high-level DLIR showed a similar value as that with ASiR-V. Artifact and acceptability did not show a significant difference among the adapted levels of DLIR. Conclusion Adaptation of high-level DLIR for the pediatric head CT can significantly reduce image noise. Modification is needed while processing artifacts.

  • A spatially adaptive falter was formulated to imrove PET image qualify and the Performance of the filter was evaluated using simulation and phantom and human PET studies. In the proposed filter. if a pixel was identified as the edge Pixel, the Pixel value was Preserved. Otherwise a Pixel was replaced by the mean of the pixel values weighted by 2:7: 2. A Pixel was identified as the edge Pixel. if it satisfies the following conditions : the number of ADs (absolute difference between center and neighborhood pixels) which is smaller than THl (($pix_max{\times}0.1/log_2(NPM)$, NPM : mean of 6 neighborhood pixels excluding minimum and maximum) is 8-k and the number of ADs which is lager than TH2 ($NPM{\times}0.1$) is k. where k : 2, 3, …, 6. The results of this study demonstrate the superior performance of the Proposed titter compared to Gaussian fitter, weight median filter and subset averaged median filter. The proposed tittering method is simple but effective in increasing uniformity and contrast with minimal degradation of spatial resolution of PET images and thus. is expected to Provide improved diagnositc quality PET images .

  • This paper describes a new method for a speech playback speed control with high quality. The proposed method provides an adaptive threshold filtering solution for detecting active regions of a speech signal that are followed by playback speed. For a given playback speed, threshold value is adaptively determined with the statistics(:mean and standard deviation) of each frame in speech, and is used to select only active blocks within the current frame. To minimize quality degradation(i.e., pitch degradation) caused due to high-speed playback, the threshold filtering priorly eliminates relatively low-activity blocks including voice and unvoice. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides a playback speed control solution with higher quality than SOLA(Synchonized OverLap Add) method using the pitch extraction of speech.

  • In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for real-time lane detecting against luminance variation using morphological image processing and edge-based region segmentation. In order to apply the most appropriate threshold value, the adaptive threshold was used in every frame, and perspective transform was applied to correct image distortion. After that, we designated ROI for detecting the only lane and established standard to limit region of ROI. We compared performance about the accuracy and speed when we used morphological method and do not used. Experimental result showed that the proposed algorithm improved the accuracy to 98.8% of detection rate and speed of 36.72ms per frame with the morphological method.

  • Visible light communication (VLC) using optical sources which can be simultaneously utilized for illumination and communication is currently an attractive option for wireless personal area network. Improving the data rate in optical wireless communication system is challenging due to the limited bandwidth of the optical sources. In this paper, we design the singular value decomposition (SVD)-based multiplexing multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system to support two data streams in optical wireless channels. In order to improve the spectral efficiency, the rate adaptation using multi-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) is applied according to the channel condition and we propose the method to allocate the optical power, the offset and the size of modulation scheme theoretically under the constraints of the nonnegativity of the modulated signals, the aggregate optical power and the bit error rate (BER) requirement. The simulation results show that the proposed allocation method gives the better performance than the method to allocate the optical power equally for each data stream.
