Parallel Rendering of High Quality Animation based on a Dynamic Workload Allocation Scheme (작업영역의 동적 할당을 통한 고화질 애니메이션의 병렬 렌더링)

  • Even though many studies on parallel rendering based on PC clusters have been done. most of those did not cope with non-uniform scenes, where locations of 3D models are biased. In this work. we have built a PC cluster system with POV-Ray, a free rendering software on the public domain, and developed an adaptive load balancing scheme to optimize the parallel efficiency Especially, we noticed that a frame of 3D animation are closely coherent with adjacent frames. and thus we could estimate distribution of computation amount, based on the computation time of previous frame. The experimental results with 2 real animation data show that the proposed scheme reduces by 40% of execution time compared to the simple static partitioning scheme.

  • Nowadays, with the advancement of computers, computer simulation linked with VR (Virtual Reality) technology has become a useful method for designing the automotive driving system. In this paper, the VR simulation system was developed to investigate the driving performances of the ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle) equipped with an ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) system. For this purpose, VR environment which generates visual and sound information of the vehicle, road, facilities, and terrain was organized for the realistic driving situation. Mathematical models of vehicle dynamic analysis, which includes the ACC algorithm, have been constructed for computer simulation. The ACC algorithm modulates the throttle and the brake functions of vehicles to regulate their speeds so that the vehicles can keep proper spacing. Also, the real-time simulation algorithm synchronizes vehicle dynamics simulation with VR rendering. With the developed VR simulation system, several scenarios are applied to evaluate the adaptive cruise controlled vehicle for various driving situations.

  • The metal halide lamps are now widely used in the application and commercial lighting due to their attracting properties such as good color rendering and high efficiency. But, they have a serious problem of acoustic resonance using high frequency operation and they need a high voltage to ignite. So, they have not been applied to indoors. Over the past few years, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on the electronic ballast with hot restarting and resonance phenomenon. But, Very few attempts have been made at adaptive ignition method according to lamp state. In this paper is proposed electronicballast for metal halide lamps with an igniter for adaptive ignition. The proposed electronic bllast can generate a different ignition voltage according to the arc tube state.

Also, the real-time simulation algorithm synchronizes vehicle dynamic simulation with the graphic rendering. With the developed VR simulation system, simple scenarios are applied to analyze the dynamic characteristics. It is shown that the VR simulation system could be useful to evaluate the adaptive cruise controlled vehicle on various driving conditions.

  • In this paper, we evaluate depth image preprocessing for 3D data service based on DIBR over T-DMB. We evaluate two preprocessing methods of depth images. These are gaussian smoothing and adaptive smoothing. The results show that adaptive smoothing is more suitable for images with sharp transition of depth.

  • We designed and implemented a medical image query system, including a relational database and DBMS (database management system), which can visualize image data and can achieve spatial, attribute, and mixed queries. Image data used in querying can be visualized in slice, MPR(multi-planner reformat), volume rendering, and overlapping on the query system. To reduce spatial cost and processing time in the system. brain images are spatially clustered, by an adaptive Hilbert curve filling, encoded, and stored to its database without loss for spatial query. Because the query is often applied to small image regions of interest(ROI's), the technique provides higher compression rate and less processing time in the cases.

  • An ACC driving simulator is a virtual reality device which designed to test or evaluate vehicle control algorithm. It is designed and built based on the rapid control prototyping(RCP) concept. Therefore this simulator adopt RCP tools to solve the equation of a vehicle dynamics model and control algorithm in real time, rendering engine to provide real-time visual representation of vehicle behavior and CAN communication to reduce networking load. It can provide also many different driving test environment and driving scenarios.

  • In this paper, a real-time multibody vehicle dynamics and control model has been developed for a virtual reality intelligent vehicle simulator. The simulator consists of low PCs for a virtual reality visualization system, vehicle dynamics and control analysis system a control loading system, and a network monitoring system. Virtual environment is created by 3D Studio Max graphic tool and OpenGVS real-time rendering library. A real-time vehicle dynamics and control model consists of a control module based on the sliding mode control for adaptive cruise control and a real-time multibody vehicle dynamics module based on the subsystem synthesis method. To verify the real-time capability of the model, cut-in, cut-out simulations have been carried out.

  • Adaptive mesh refinement(AMR) is one of the popular computational simulation techniques used in various scientific and engineering fields. Although AMR data is organized in a hierarchical multi-resolution data structure, traditional volume visualization algorithms such as ray-casting and splatting cannot handle the form without converting it to a sophisticated data structure. In this paper, we present a hierarchical multi-resolution splatting technique using k-d trees and octrees for AMR data that is suitable for implementation on the latest consumer PC graphics hardware. We describe a graphical user interface to set transfer function and viewing / rendering parameters interactively. Experimental results obtained on a general purpose PC equipped with an nVIDIA GeForce3 card are presented to demonstrate that the proposed techniques can interactively render AMR data(over 20 frames per second). Our scheme can easily be applied to parallel rendering of time-varying AMR data.
