  • For digital data compression, the quantization is the main part of the lossy source coding. In order to improve the performance of quantization, the vector quantizer(VQ) can be employed. The encoding complexity, however, exponentially increases as the vector dimension or bit rate gets large. Much research has been conducted to alleviate such problems of VQ. Especially for high bit rates, a constrained VQ, which is called the sample-adaptive product quantizer(SAPQ), has been proposed for reducing the hugh encoding complexity of regular VQs. SAPQ has very similar structure as to the product VQ(PQ). However, the quantizer performance can be better than the PQ case. Further, the encoding complexity and the memory requirement for the codebooks are lower than the regular full-search VQ case. Among SAPQs, 1-SAPQ has a simple quantizer structure, where each product codebook is symmetric with respect to the diagonal line in the underlying vector space. It is known that 1-SAPQ shows a good performance for i.i.d. sources. In this paper, a study on designing 1-SAPQ for the first-order Markov process. For an efficient design of 1-SAPQ, an algorithm for the initial codebook is proposed, and through the numerical analysis it is shown that 1-SAPQ shows better quantizer distortion than the VQ case, of which encoding complexity is similar to that of 1-SAPQ, and shows distortions, which are close to that of the DPCM(differential pulse coded modulation) scheme with the Lloyd-Max quantizer.

  • In this paper, an efficient quantization method of line spectrum pairs(LSP) with cascaded structure of vector quantizer and scalar quantizer is proposed. First, input LSP parameters is vector-quantized using a codebook a with a moderate number of entries. In the second stage of quantization, the components of residual vector are individually quantized by the scalar quantizer. The utilization of ordering property of LSP parameters and the inclusion of interframe prediction improve the quantizer performance and remove the stability check routine after quantization procedure. The new vector-scalar hybrid quantizer using 26 bits/frame shows a transparent quality of speech that an average spectral distortion is 1 dB and the frame proportion with above 2 dB spectral distortion is less than 2%. The performances of proposed quantization method is evaluated in the transmission errors.

  • This paper presents a method for improving the performance of ISF coefficients quantizer through compensating the defect of the split structure vector quantization using the ordering property of ISF coefficients. And design the ISF coefficients quantizer for wideband speech codec using proposed method. The wideband speech codec uses split structure vector quantizer which could not use the correlation between ISF coefficients fully to reduce complexity and the size of codebook. The proposed algorithm uses the ordering property of ISF coefficients to overcome the defect. Using the ordering property, the codebook redundancy could be figured out. The codebook redundancy is replaced by the adaptive-extended codebook to improve the performance of the quantizer through using the ordering property, ISF coefficient prediction and interpolation of existing codebook. As a result, the proposed algorithm shows that the adaptive-extended codebook algorithm could get about 2 bit gains in comparison with the existing split structure ISF quantizer of AMR-WB (G.722.2) in the points of spectral distortion.

  • Optimal quantizers in conducting the entropy-constrained quantization for high bit rates have the lattice structure. The quantization process is simple due to the regular structure and various quantization algorithms are proposed depending on the lattice. In this paper, such a lattice vector quantization is implemented by using the sample-adaptive product quantizer (SAPQ). It is shown that several important lattices can be implemented by SAPQ and the lattice vector quantization can be performed by using a simple integer-transform function of scalar values within SAPQ. The performance of the proposed lattice SAPQ is compared to the entropy-constrained scalar quantizer and the entropy-constrained SAPQ (ECSAPQ) at a similar encoding complexity. Even though ECSAPQ shows a good performance at low bit-rates, lattice SAPQ shows better performance than the ECSAPQ case for a wide range of bit rates.

  • Conventional pragmatic TCMs need sector phase quantizer to apply Viterbi decoder which uses 3-bit soft decision. A symbol transformation applied to the incoming I-channel and Q-channel symbols allows to use Viterbi decoder without sector phase quantizer. We analyzed structure and performance of proposed decoder, and applied it to the turbo decoder. We know that the performance of proposed decoder is better than that of conventional decoder by 1 [㏈]because of increasing of Euclidean distance.

  • In this Paper, we designed an LSP(Line Spectral Pairs) parameter quantizer with cascaded structure of vector quantizer and scalar quantizer for the wideband speech coder. We have chosen the 16th-order of the LP coefficients. These coefficients are then transformed into the LSP parameters which have the excellent properties for quantization and easy stability checking condition of synthesis filter. In the first stage of quantization, input LSP parameters are split-vector-quantized using two 8-th order codebooks. In the second stage, the components of residual vector are individually quantized by the scalar quantizer utilizing the ordering property of LSP parameters. The designed adaptive VQ-SQ quantizer using 35 bits/frame shows the wideband transparency that the average spectral distortion should be less than 1.6 ㏈ and less than 4% of the frames should have SD above 3 ㏈. The simulation results show that the designed quantizer provides a 2-3 bits/frame saving over the typical vector-scalar quantizer.

  • Quantizer with bit rate control performs lossy compressionin moving image coding. Efficient quantizer can improve subjective quality of reconstructed image at the same bit rate because most of errors are occured at this stage. Although quantization matix of current compression stantards reflects human visual system, the performance of their quantization matrixes is not always optimal because they are not considering each image characteristics. We proposed a new adaptive optimal quantization matrix obtained by considering complexity of each image subblocks. It resulted in improvments of image quality about 0.05-0.82 dB and good subject quality at edge regions when we simulated the quantization method in various coding statndards.

  • H.263 is an international standard of ITU-T that can makes the service such as video phone, video conference in the transmission line less than 64Kbps. This recommendation draft has used motion estimation/compensation, transform coding and quantizing methods. TMN5 used for the performance estimation of H.263 has fundamentally used DCT in transform coding method and presented quantizer for quantizing the DCT transform coefficient. This paper is presenting adaptive quantizer effectively able to quantize DCT coefficient considering the human visual sensitivity while the structure of TMN5 is maintaining. As quantizer that proposed DCT-based H.263 could make transmit more frame than TMN5 in a same transfer speed, it could lower the frame drop effect. And the luminance signal appeared the difference of -0.3 ~ +0.7dB in the average PSNR for the estimation of objective image quality and the chrominance signal appeared the improvement in about 1.5dB in comparision with TMN5. As a result it can attain the better image quality compared to TMN5 in the estimation of subjective image quality.

  • Video compression algorithms are based on removing spatial and/or temproal redundancy inherent in image sequences by predictive(DPCM) encoding, transform encoding, or a combination of predictive and transform encoding. In this paper, each 8$\times$8 DCT coefficient of DFD(displaced frame difference) is adaptively quantized by one of the four quantizers depending on total distortion level, which is determined by characteristics of HVS(human visual system) and buffer status. Therefore, the number of possible quantizer selection vectors(patterns) is 4$^{64}$. If this vectors are coded, toomany bits are required. Thus, the quantizer selection vectors are limited to 2048 for Y and 512 for each U, V by the proposed method using SWAD(sum of weighted absolute difference) for discriminating vectors. The computer simulation results, using the codebook vectors which are made by the proposed method, show that the subjective and objective image quality (PSNR) are goor with the limited bit allocation. • In this paper, efficient quantization methods of line spectrum pairs (LSP) which has good performances and low complexity and memory are proosed for vocoder of mobile communication system. The adaptive quantization method utilizing the ordering property of LSP parameters is used in a scalar quantizer and a vector-scalar hybrid quantizer. The proposed scalar quantization algorithm needs 31 bits/frame to maintain the transparent quality of speech. The improved vector-scalar quantizer achieves an average spectral distortion of 1dB using 26 bits/frame. The proposed methods are evaluated in the channel errors and changed the predictor structure to maintain the robustness to channel errors.
