In this paper, we have proposed WiBro receiver structure employing joint adaptive antenna scheme at the base station (BS) and the mobile station (MS) and evaluated its performance. In WiBro system, the joint use of transmit beamforming at BS and receive beamforming at MS can improve the SINR significantly and increase the capacity compared to the conventional system. Moreover, power allocation level can be decreased because channel variation can be reduced by using the jointly updated weight. However, it needsthe calculation of the antenna weights in every subcarrier for performance improvement. This could imply an enormous computational burden. However, the computational complexity can be reduced significantly by using the same set of the antenna weights for the adjacent subcarriers instead of calculating antenna weights for every subcarrier. We have analyzed the impact of subcarrier grouping for weight calculation on the system performance.

This paper details the downlink performance analysis of an multiple antennas system that combines adaptive beamforming and spatial multiplexing (SM) Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO). The combination of MIMO signal processing with adaptive beamforming is applied to WiBro, the South Korean Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) system that follows the IEEE 802.16e standard. Performance analysis is based on the results of experiments and simulations obtained from a fixed-point simulation testbed. Simulations demonstrate that the MIMO Beamforming OFDMA system improves the required signal to noise ratio (SNR) over the conventional MIMO OFDMA system by 3 dB (QPSK) / 2.5 dB (16-QAM) for the frame error rate (FER) of 1% in the WiBro signal environments. From the implementation of the fixed-point simulation testbed and its experimental results, we verify the feasibility of the MIMO Beamforming technology for realizing a practical WiBro base station.

We propose a new adaptive K-best Sphere Decoding (SD) algorithm for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems where the number of survivor paths, K is changed based on the characteristics of path metrics which contain the instantaneous channel condition. In order to overcome a major drawback of Maximum Likelihood Detection (MLD) which exponentially increases the computational complexity with the number of transmit antennas, the conventional adaptive K-best SD algorithms which achieve near to MLD performance have been proposed. However, they still have redundant computation complexity since they only employ the channel fading gain as a channel condition indicator without instantaneous Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) information. hi order to complement this drawback, the proposed algorithm use the characteristics of path metrics as a simple channel indicator. It is found that the ratio of the minimum path metric to the other path metrics reflects SNR information as well as channel fading gain. By adaptively changing K based on this ratio, the proposed algorithm more effectively reduce the computation complexity compared to the conventional K-best algorithms which achieve same performance.

In this paper, we combine AMC (Adaptive Modulation and Coding) with MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) multiplexing to improve the throughput performance of AMC in Next Generation Communication Mobile Systems. In addition, we propose a system that adopts STD (Selection Transmit Diversity) in the combined system. The received SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) is improved by adopting STD techniques and an improved SNR increases a probability of selecting MCS (Modulation and Coding Scheme) level that supports higher data rate. The computer simulation is performed in flat Rayleigh fading channel. The results show that higher throughput is achieved by AMC-TD schemes. AMC-STTD scheme shows about 250kbps increase in throughput. And AMC-STD with 2 transmit antennas achieves about 420 kbps throughput improvement over the conventional AMC at 9dB SNR.

One of the effective ways to increase data transmission rate is to use massive antenna technique where tens or hundreds of antennas are deployed in base station and spatial diversity gain is improved by multiuser method. If multiuser method is applied, there will be inter-user interference and maximal ratio combiner (MRC) is conventionally used to reduce the complexity of the receiver and to eliminate interference. However, as the number of mobile devices increases, the performance of the conventional receiver becomes deteriorated. To solve this problem, we propose a new detector that completely eliminates the interference from the registered devices and reduces that from the unregistered devices. Then, to reduce the complexity of the proposed scheme, we propose adaptive algorithm of the proposed scheme. Through simulation, we show that the proposed scheme has better bit error rate performance than the conventional scheme.
In this paper, a novel trellis-coded spatial modulation (TCSM) design method is presented and analyzed. Inspired by the key idea of trellis-coded modulation (TCM), the detailed analysis is firstly provided on the unequal error protection performance of spatial modulation constellation. Subsequently, the Ungerboeck set partitioning rule is proposed and applied to develop a general method to design the novel TCSM schemes. Different from the conventional TCSM approaches, the novel one based on the Ungerboeck set partitioning rule has similar properties as the classic TCM, which has simple but effective code design criteria. Moreover, the novel designed schemes are robust and adaptive to the generalized Rician fading channels, which outperform the traditional TCSM ones. For examples, the novel 4-, 8-, and 16-state TCSM schemes are constructed by employing different transmit antennas and different modulation schemes in different channel conditions. Simulation results clearly demonstrate the advantages of the novel TCSM schemes over the conventional ones.
In this paper, an uplink MC-CDMA system incorporating multiuser detection and smart antennas has been considered. The performance of asynchronous as well as synchronous system is studied over a correlated Rayleigh multipath slow fading channel. A simplified array-processing algorithm suitable for slow fading situation is investigated to overcome the heavy computational complexity associated with Eigen solutions. The effect of variable data rate in the system performance is considered and effectiveness of antenna array to handle high data rate is discussed. A brief investigation on the system performance degradation due to correlated channel is also carried out. Based on the extensive simulation carried out, the performance of the asynchronous uplink system is found dramatically improved with antenna array and multiuser detection. Asynchronicity and channel correlation are found to affect the system performance significantly. The investigated simpli- fied algorithm produces similar results as Eigen solutions in slow fading situation with much reduced complexity.
For mobile wireless systems with full frequency reuse, co-channel interference near the cell coverage boundaries has a significant impact on the signal reception performance. This paper addresses an approach to efficiently mitigate the effect of downlink co-channel interference when multi-antenna terminals are used in cellular environments, by proposing a signal detection strategy combined with a system-level coordination for dynamic frequency reuse. We demonstrate the utilization of multi-antennas to perform spatial demultiplexing of both the desired signal and interfering signals from adjacent cells results in significant improvement of spectral efficiency compared to the maximal ratio combining (MRC) performance, especially when an appropriate frequency reuse based on the traffic loading condition is coordinated among cells. Both analytic expressions for the capacity and experimental results using the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) are used to confirm the performance gain. The robustness of the proposed scheme against varying operational conditions such as the channel estimation error and shadowing effects are also verified by simulation results.

The Multiuser Eigenmode Transmission (MET) has generated significant interests in literature due to its optimal performance in linear precoding systems. The MET can simultaneously transmit several spatial multiplexing eigenmodes to multiple users which significantly enhance the system performance. The maximum number of users that can be served simultaneously is limited due to the constraints on the number antennas, and thus an appropriate user selection is critical to the MET system. Various algorithms have been developed in previous works such as the enumerative search algorithm. However, the high complexities of these algorithms impede their applications in practice. In this paper, motivated by the necessity of an efficient and effective user selection algorithm, a low complexity recursive user selection algorithm is proposed for the MET system. In addition, the fairness of the MET system is improved by using the combination of the proposed user selection algorithm and the adaptive Proportional Fair Scheduling (PFS) algorithm. Extensive simulations are implemented to verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
