  • The Tolosa-Hunt syndrome(THS) consists of a painful ophthalmoplegia related to a granulomatous inflammatory process in the cavernous sinus, which may be documented by cerebral magnetic resonance imaging with gadolinium enhancement. Generally, it has been reported that 2 weeks steroid therapy relieves the symptoms(periorbital pain, ophthalmoplegia) of THS. In this case, there had been no improvement of symptoms by western medical treatments(steroid & analgesics). but, the symptoms were resolved clearly by acupuncture therapy during 6 weeks(5 times/week). If more clinical trials like this are proved to be effective in THS, we can expect that acupuncture will be another therapeutical modality in THS.

  • This study examined the effectiveness of Korean-Western cooperative treatment for patients with plantar fasciitis. Fifty patients received Korean medicine treatments (acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine) and Western medicine treatments (polydeoxyribonucleotide, and extracorporeal shock wave therapy). Evaluation methods used were comparison before and after ultrasound (P9), and numeric rating scale scores. Results revealed a significant improvement in the level of pain and evaluation of improvement using ultrasound. Moreover, it was suggested that Korean-Western cooperative medicine treatment may be effective for the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

  • Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent degenerative joint disease causing significant pain and dysfunction. This case report presents the use of electromagnetic acupuncture utilizing a Whata 153 device generating a magnetic field to enhance acupuncture stimulation for the treatment of KOA. A 69-year-old female diagnosed with KOA experienced a reduction in pain (numerical rating scale score from 7 to 4), improved gait, and decreased stiffness and swelling after daily electromagnetic acupuncture treatments during hospitalization. In addition, the Korean Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scoreimproved from 20 to 14, and the patient rated her overall improvement as "significantly improved" on the patient's global impression of change scale. Although these findings suggest potential benefits of electromagnetic acupuncture for KOA, the case report design limits its generalizability. More controlled trials are warranted to confirm the efficacy and safety of electromagnetic acupuncture as a treatment of KOA.

Methods : Operation(OP) recommended 20 patients with lumbar disc hemiation were treated with chuna therapy, acupuncture, bee-venom acupuncture one times a week and took herbal medicine after a meal two times daily. The patients' symptoms were assessed 1 week, 2 week, 4 week, 6 week, 8 week by Visual analogue scale(VAS), Oswestry disability index(ODI), 36-Item short-form health survey(SF-36). Results : 1. VAS(LBP and Sciatica) score was significantly improved after 8 weeks (P<0.05). 2. ODI, SF-36 score was significantly improved after 8 weeks (P<0.05). 3 There were significant changes in physical functioning(PF), bodily pain(BP), social functioning(SF), role emotinal(RE), mental health(MH) score of SF-36 after 8 weeks (P<0.05). Conclusions : This study suggests that Korean medical treatment(Herbal medicine, chuna therapy, acupuncture, bee-venom acupuncture) can be applicable to improve symptoms in patients with lumbar disc herniation.

  • Background: Parkinson's disease(PD) affects not only motor symptoms, but also nonmotor symptoms. This study is a clinical trial to determine whether Qigong and acupuncture affect nonmotor symptoms of PD. Methods: A 2-arm parallel and randomized trial was performed with 21 participants who had received either Qigong meditation only [control group (CG)] or acupuncture and Qigong meditation [experimental group (EG)]. The participants' levels of the discomfort in nonmotor symptoms from Parkinson's disease were evaluated by using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scales (UPDRS 1) and Test of Smell Identification (TSI) before and after 12 treatments at baseline and 1 month after 12 treatments. Results: The both CG and EG showed improvements in the UPDRS 1 score after treatment by 5.6 ± 5.15 (p= 0.003; 74%) and 4.8 ± 3.80 (p = 0.004; 79%), respectively. The both CG and the EG did improvements in the TSI after treatment by 10.3 ± 4.37 (p < 0.001; 84%) and 12.6 ± 1.77 (p = 0.022; 100%), respectively. However, statistical differences were not observed between the CG and the EG using the UPDRS 1 and the TSI scores. Conclusion: The combination of Qigong and acupuncture and Qigong alone was shown to improve the nonmotor symptoms and olfactory function of PD. In the future, large-scale clinical studies on alternative treatment for PD and studies on mechanisms affecting nonmotor symptoms of acupuncture and Qigong are needed.

  • Objectives : This study was to examine the effect of Intradermal Acupuncture therapy at Kyeonjeong, Cheonryo and Kokji on the shoulder pain. The research was conducted with non equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Methods : IThe subjects were the women who was suffering for shoulder pain, who are employed at two hospitals in Busan, from April to June, 2006. The 24 women were experimental group who were applied to Intradermal Acupuncture Therapy at Kyeonjeong, Cheonryo and Kokji, while the 20 women were control group who weren't applied to any treatments. The severity of shoulder pain and the extent of the subjective symptoms of shoulder pain were pre-measured. The Intradermal Acupuncture therapy was done a total of 4 times, 2 times a week over 2 weeks and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as an experimental treatment. As a post survey, the severity of shoulder pain, the frequency of shoulder pain and the extent of the subjective symptoms of shoulder pain were measured after one week and two weeks of experimental treatment. Research tools are Visual Analogue Scale by Cline et al. for measuring the severity of shoulder pain and the tool developed by Japan's industrial fatigue research committee of the industrial hygienics society and modified. Results : There was a significant difference(F=4.132, p=0.019) for the severity of shoulder pain on the interaction between time and group. There was a significant difference(F=11.193, p=0.000) for the extent of the subjective symptoms of shoulder pain on the interaction between time and. group. Conclusion : Based on the above results, it can be determined that Intradermal Acupuncture Therapy at Kyeonjeong, Cheonryo and Kokji can be used as the effective treatments for reducing of shoulder pam.
