King Cheoljong was the twenty-fifth King in the Joseon Dynasty. He did not live a comfortable royal life in his childhood. He succeeded to the crown in the age of 19 after a series of poor days in Ganghwado. During his sovereignty over the territory, the noble class with power interfered with his control in almost every issue, so he could not manage his authority as a ruler. His disease history is hardly included in "Formal Records of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄)" which is the prime governmental document, however, some of his disease history appear in "Records of the Diaries of the Kings of Joseon(日省錄)". The primary disease of King Cheoljong was nausea-vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea etc. caused by spleen-stomach weakness. Another main illness was phlegm syndrome. He showed symptoms of coughs, asthma, sputum, and he easily caught cold having a weak health condition. He died at 33 and cause of death was unclear with remaining documents. Just small chances are that the cause was lung tuberculosis. He took a large amount of herbal medicine in his life, which was for curing or toning up his body. Tonifying medicinal herbs were used continuously, and curing herbal medicine was used for spleen-stomach weakness, phlegm syndrome and cold treatment. Treatments of acupuncture and moxa rarely appear in the documents.
"Uihakdokseogi(醫學讀書記)" is a casual work which mentions Ujaekyeong(尤在涇)'s thoughts on various problems found through extensive studying or in practice. The book does not focus on a single topic, thus the spectrum of the work is broad and is filled with problems which would interest most medical professionals. The major contents of the first volume of "Uihakdokseogi(醫學讀書記)" include differences of view on health preservation, the Five Circuit Phases[五運] and Six Atmospheric Influences[六氣], diseases, and the "Naegyeong(內經)", mentions on errors in transcription , and the gap between certain contents in "Yeongchu(靈樞)" and "Somun(素問)". U[尤在涇] asserts that Eum and Yang(陰陽) in a human should be in harmony as is the Gi(氣) of the sky and earth[天地] is, and that one should live according to the Gi(氣) of the four seasons to live a healthy life. He does not vary largely from the context of other writers on the matter of the Five Circuit Phases [五運] and Six Atmospheric Influences[六氣], and focuses on the concepts of predominant Gi[主氣], guest Gi[客氣], corresponding years[天符] , correlating years[歲會], and Taeeul corresponding years[太乙天符]. He mentions causes, symptoms, and treatments of various diseases such as cough due to asthenia of the viscera, stagnation of Yang(陽), stagnation of Eum(陰), abscess of the stomach, hard abscess of the intestines, upper emaciation, edema of the limbs, inability to raise the limbs, broken thigh, turbid fluid, inversion of Gi(氣) flow, sudden onset of fainting with cold extremities, diarrhea due to disorder of Gi(氣), and malaria. U[尤在涇] also points out faults of "Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion[甲乙經]" in the understanding of "Naegyeong(內經)".

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Korean medicine in a patient with cognitive impairment, emotional disturbance, and sleep disturbance due to a diffuse axonal injury associated with a traumatic brain injury. The patient was treated with herbal medicine and acupuncture. The treatment effects were evaluated using the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K) and the Global Detraction Scale (GDS), and by observing clinical symptoms. Improvements in the total scores of MMSE-K and GDS were observed after the Korean medicine treatments; the MMSE-K score increased from 13 to 23 and the GDS score decreased from 5 to 4. The emotional and sleep disturbances were also reduced. These case report findings suggest that Korean medicine may be effective for treating symptoms of diffuse axonal injury in patients with traumatic brain injury.

The degree of cognitive impairment was measured based on the Mini Mental State Examination-Korea (MMSE-K), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), and correct answer ratio. Results: After traditional Korean medicine treatment, the MMSE-K score increased from 13 to 19 and the MBI score increased from 63 to 71. The patient's conversations in daily life also proceeded more smoothly than before hospitalization, and the correct answer ratio rose. This study reports the effects of Korean medicine treatments including Chuna manual therapy (CMT) and exercise treatment for a patient suffering with cervical spinal stenosis. We treated patient diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis. The patient was treated with CMT once a day for 26 days. Manual muscle testing (MMT), ratio and degree of numbness, numerical rating scale (NRS) were used as tools for evaluating the patient's progress. MMT was increased from 3+ to 5, ratio and degree of numbness were decreased from grade (Gr.) 9 to Gr. 4, NRS was decreased from 5 to 3. This study suggests that CMT and self-exercise can be considered as effective treatment for cervical spinal stenosis.
